While the retentionistas are likely howling, a decent ratings start for Don't Trust The B---- In Apt. 23 has it debut as "likely to be renewed", but predictions based on early ratings are subject to change rapidly. Stay tuned.

Following the ratings loser Titanic special, GCB fell to a series low 1.5 adults 18-49 rating on Sunday. The trigger happy would predict it likely to be canceled now, but since it had a string of prior non-dreadful ratings, I'm not so quick to move it from a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation.

Why is Cougar Town just a "toss up" with its dreadful ratings instead of "likely to be canceled" or worse? Because of past (negative) experience, I'm keeping shows in their third seasons (even shortened ones) no lower than a "toss up" because of potential syndication related benefits.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did ABC's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    ABC Exec #1: Okay, so we’ve got a pilot that is respectful towards Christianity that was created by Marc Cherry who gave us “Desperate Housewives” and stars Terry O’Quinn from “Lost.” And then we’ve got a pilot that laughs at Christians and has “Bi+ch” in the title and was created by the guy who gave us “Cashmere Mafia” and stars that woman from “Bob Patterson.” Which one should we pick up?

    ABC Exec #2: The one that laughs at Christians. If there’s one thing research has taught us, Christians love being laughed at! And sponsors love it when Christians are being laughed at! And women love being called a bi+ch! This will be edgy, and edgy is the key to success and great PR! Hallelujah!

    ABC Exec #1: BRILLIANT! We’ll pass on that other whatever from whatshisface right away!

    Interesting you have Body of Proof cancel when Private Practice did worse in that same timeslot

  • Brian

    I think Cougar Town fans should be worried that Apartment 23 has taken their spot in the fall. Their new rallying cry: “Don’t Trust it”.

  • katelyn

    I think Body of Proof stand a chance for a third season it has been the 2nd most watched show on ABC for a while now. Glee is doing worse then Body of Proof ever did in its time slot.

  • tvfreak

    @Riff Rafferty: Whoa whoa whoa. Don’t tell me ABC rejected 666 Park Avenue! That was one of the ABC pilots I was looking forward to the most, along with Last Resort, Zero Hour, and Gotham.

  • rob60990

    “Glee is doing worse then Body of Proof ever did in its time slot.”

    Comparing shows that air on different networks in different timeslots to make a case for a renewal is absolutely idiotic. Besides, TOTAL VIEWERS DO NOT MATTER.

    I wanted to like Bitch but it did nothing for me or what I expected. This kind of story on FX would be great.

    Watch REVENGE tonight 10/9c.

    Revenge out-rates Happy Endings LOL.

    GCB and Scandal are true toss-ups. They could go either way. I could see both renewed even with a 1.7 average. They give ABC ammunition with Desperate Housewives, Body of Proof, Private Practice, and Grey’s Anatomy all ending or nearing their respective ends.

    Apt 23 will be renewed with 2.0. Any less than that and it’s a goner.

  • Justin121

    The Summer Glau Curse is true. Grey’s Anatomy was stable in the ratings for 3 seasons until she appeared then kept hitting series low after another.

    @Rebecca, thanks for the Ellen Revenge clip.

    GCB – 22
    CASTLE – 21
    REVENGE – 25

    It wouldn’t be nearly as interesting if you had bothered to read the dateline.

    @Justin
    You’re welcome for the Ellen Revenge info. Right now the vote right before yours (which we’ll have to discount since it’s wrong but I’ll tell you how to do it) is rob’s. Copy and paste whatever vote is just before yours. Then you add one point, two points and three points to 3 shows while also taking one point, two points and three points away from three other shows. When the show list gets shorter we’ll drop down to just doing +1, +2, -1 and -2, like how it is on at least one of the other network threads now. @tvfreak says that once a show gets up to 100 points it’ll move into the “Victors’ Village” and something will happen later to let the top contenders battle it out. Also, again, when you vote make sure it’s just once every 24 hours. If you miss your vote time the next day, just vote later when you can (but never earlier than your previous vote time).
    ———
    Whomever votes next, go off rob’s vote on the previous page. Thanks.

    According to ABC Medianet’s Daily Program Schedule, Cougar Town’s one-hour season finale has been rescheduled to Tuesday, May 29 at 8 PM.

  • Liz

    @tvfreak

    Whoa whoa whoa. Don’t tell me ABC rejected 666 Park Avenue!

    No, he’s talking about Marc Cherry’s Hallelujah from last season, which ABC passed on. Because that was apparently a show of which he approved, which is really the most important thing, right? And if there’s anything we’ve learned about Riff Rafferty so far, it’s that he believes it’s only okay to be totally hateful toward women, gay people, and minorities. But Christians? That’s just disrespectful!

  • Rebecca

    @Common Anomaly
    Good. Futoncritic hasn’t updated their listings for CT yet, but maybe that extension will help all its episodes air. They still have CT on for an hour on 5/15 and nothing further, up through episode #13. So #14 and #15 will air on the 29th? Or maybe they’re still off the schedule.

  • Nevid
