While the retentionistas are likely howling, a decent ratings start for Don't Trust The B---- In Apt. 23 has it debut as "likely to be renewed", but predictions based on early ratings are subject to change rapidly. Stay tuned.

Following the ratings loser Titanic special, GCB fell to a series low 1.5 adults 18-49 rating on Sunday. The trigger happy would predict it likely to be canceled now, but since it had a string of prior non-dreadful ratings, I'm not so quick to move it from a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation.

Why is Cougar Town just a "toss up" with its dreadful ratings instead of "likely to be canceled" or worse? Because of past (negative) experience, I'm keeping shows in their third seasons (even shortened ones) no lower than a "toss up" because of potential syndication related benefits.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did ABC's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    With “Don’t Trust The B in Apt. 23″ and “GCB,” is there any reason to doubt that next season you’re likely to run across a show called “WTF?”

  • Rebecca

    @Ralph Hahn
    Believe it or not, there’s actually a pilot out there called “Oh F***, It’s You.” I only believe it because it’s true, sadly. Can’t remember which network. It’s not on my list of “must see” pilots.

  • Ralph Hahn

    @Rebecca: After submitting the “WTF” post, I thought that with THOUSANDS of channels out there on cable and satellite, there probably already IS a show called “WTF.”

    Remember the controversy when some network came up with a series based on a John Candy film, and a young kid opens the show cold with “Uncle Buck, you suck.”

    Has it really come to this? Coming up with programs with an abbreviated version of a normally censored word, or a word to offend a particular group, (i.e. Christians, who represent ONLY 80% of the USA) to entice viewers to try the show out? You might get PETA and the ASPCA to condemn the show, but wait until someone comes up with a show title like: “Roasting Baby Penguins.”

    *** No animals were hurt, tortured or killed in the production of the above post. ;-)

    I feel bad for saying this as I don’t want people to be out of work, however I think Don’t Trust the B…in Apartment 23 is going to last. I’ve watched both episodes only because there’s nothing else on between Modern Family and Revenge (I would rather be watching Happy Endings reruns as I think that show is hysterical and genuinely leaves me smiling and feeling good after an episode).

    To be fair, most conservatives dislike the PTC as well. Choices and personal responsibility trump elitism any day.

    which explains obama being up 5 in polls?…um ok

    it will be just like any thing else..if its decent people will watch…if its crap like skins was on mtv then it will get canceled..ptc or any other group doesnt really mean anything…gbc doesnt seem anything special to me…havent seen 23 yet but looks kinda cute

    @ Damien Apt 23 is good it is not stereotypical the way GCB is. The characters are fresh and original and Beek is funny, without over doing the Dawson Creek references. His character has a an actual story-line so they will not be going a slap-stick gag route with is character.

    I like Apt 23 so far, but if the network had to make a choice of whether to keep it or HE I hope they keep HE.

  • Rebecca

    @tvfreak
    I never watched that show, but the book was pretty good.

  • Lizam

    @Rebecca it is not going to choice between one or the other with HE/Apt23. ABC clearly wants to expand there comedy block. If HE does not return it will be because ABC feels there new pilots are stronger.

  • Jon

    @ Fred

    Have you watched the New Girl recently? It hands down the best comedy on tv right now. I’ll admit it started off a bit slow, but as the season has progressed the chemistry of the cast is so good. Each character is funny in their own right, that Zooey often doesn’t even need to be the center of the show. I totally disagree with you, and think it’s the cast that makes the show

  • Rebecca

    @Lizam
    That’s why I used the word “if.” I’d be okay with both shows being on next season; I just prefer HE.

  • tvfreak

    @Damien: Apartment 23 is a real delight, especially the titular B—, the naive country girl, and of course NCIS’s Liza Lapira as the bizarro Asian girl next door. This beats New Girl any day. :)

    @Rebecca: I watched most episodes of the show, maybe skipped one or two. I only read small snippets of the book, but what I saw was definitely not fit for broadcast.
