As CBS' late season drama replacements typically do, NYC 22 arrived with a resounding ratings flop on Sunday night. It is certain to be canceled.

But that won't help A Gifted Man or Unforgettable, they're still certain to be canceled. CBS will want three hours free for new dramas next fall, and there's no room on their schedule for those ratings losers.

CBS will also cancel at least one of the CSI offspring (NY or Miami). More sitcom time could save Rules of Engagement and/or Rob, but without it, they're both likely gone too.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did CBS' shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Is the index for Rules of Engagement still frozen at its value from the fall? Shouldn’t it be below 1.02, based on the three new episodes that have aired since January?

I am confused about Unforgettable, it is always in the top 20 for ratings, why is it certain to be canceled?

  • One @ Bill Gorman

Even if they don’t expand, that leaves EXACTLY THREE slots for new dramas. CBS likes to launch new dramas in threes. So the CSI spinoffs would still seem to be on the downside in terms of renewal odds, at least from where I sit…

Ratings and the money they represent would certain seem to back such assertions up…

  • Rebecca

That is probably top 20 for # of overall viewers, not ratings. Viewers who don’t fall in the desired 18-49 age demographic.

  • Nick

    THE MENTALIST – 20 (-2)
    HAWAII FIVE-0 – 5 (+2)
    MIKE & MOLLY – 10 (+3)
    NCIS – 24 (-3)
    HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER – 40 (-1)

  • Ralph Hahn

@Rebecca: MADison Avenue needs to change this “stinkin’thinkin'” and realize that 18-49, as THE age-desired group, doesn’t hold much water anymore.

The younger half of that demo are probably still living home with their parents, who are probably still paying their “children’s” car insurance, health benefits and college loans. It is what it is.

I’m 58 and still shop around for new brands, including a lot of computer and entertainment brand-name items. I live in one of the most senior-populated communities and most of them are still active into their ’70s.

So, we still spend more money than 18-49 and the old notion of older people refusing to switch brands in pretty much an “old wives’ tale” at this point.

I’ve remained loyal to one product since the late ’60s: Ultra Brite Toothopaste. ;-m)

You have bashed UNFORGETTABLE since before it aired….it consistently drew 11 million viewers on first run episodes…how many shows do that? NYC 22 is garbage. UNFORGETTABLE is a good show, they just need to involve more of the cast….and stop with all the repeat episodes. You involve your own thoughts, way too biased….many people love UNFORGETTABLE, just not you.

  • Migzy

I had hopes for NYC22 cause of LeeLee but that premiere episode was awful. It felt like they just threw a bunch of stories together and hope it stuck, it didn’t.

  • Ultima

Seven other dramas on CBS draw more viewers than Unforgettable. That’s the entire point. Unforgettable has decent numbers, but those numbers only get it to 8th in total viewers and 8th in 18-49 rating amongst CBS dramas. When you factor in other renewals for shows nearing syndication, then you have nine renewed dramas and no room left on the schedule for Unforgettable.

CBS has to make room for new shows next fall and they are willing to cancel decently performing shows in order to do that.

  • Grace

PLEASE don’t cancel A GIFTED MAN!! I love the stories and the cast is great together. PLEASE give it more of a chance to succeed. People started getting into it right as the season ended. I LOVE A GIFTED MAN!!!!
Also, I would like CSI:N.Y. to remain on the air. LOVE Gary and Sela. I looked forward to both these show every week.
Many shows never were popular until the second season. CBS, give A GIFTED MAN a chance and CSI:N.Y. another season.

  • Beavis

Geez, so you let NYC 22 get ONE airing after a crappy ratings show and it doesn’t do well and you axe it. Temperamental bitches!

  • Grace

I don’t understand how CBS can cancel a show (NYC 22) after only one airing.
A GIFTED MAN was really starting to get better ratings right at the end of the season. I think it deserves another chance. LOVE the cast and stories.
Same with CSI:N.Y. LOVE the series and the cast, especially Gary and Sela. Gary is far from arrogant to whomever said that…idiot!!

  • Holly

I just finished watching NYC 22 and I really liked it!

  • bluejays

I think CSI NY will go too. Miami will stay for a reduced last season.

@TVDude. Why would CBS be upset with Mike and Molly? I agree its weakish when you look at the overall numbers for a Monday night but as someone pointed out the other week, it’s actually up against the strongest half hours of Dancing and Voice. With that taken into account it actually holds up pretty well.

  • gustavo

The Unusuals (may favorite failed show) was way better than NYC 22.

  • bluejays

@Dean-w.”CBS doesn’t like any of its Shows what CBS loves is the money they represent.
That’s why they’ll never move ‘The Mentalist’ on Sunday at 10.”

Maybe not but CBS might move The Mentalist to Fridays as per their recent experiment.

The thing is syndication economics have to come into play when looking at some of CBS decisions. The Mentalist is not a CBS production.

  • Rob

Really smart thinking, keep cancelling shows to put new ones out there . No wonder shows don’t have viewers, why watch and get addicted to a show only for it to get cancelled . Many people are passing on shows because of this reason .Keep a show on to TRY to build an audience.

  • Liz

Really smart thinking, keep cancelling shows to put new ones out there.

Indeed, once a show premieres, it should never, ever be cancelled. It should stay on the air until the end of time. I Love Lucy and Gunsmoke and The Defenders should still be running, right? Really, what was stopping the networks from keeping those shows going? The deaths of all their cast members and creative teams? Bah, excuses!
