Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2011-12 season in May, 2012. (includes results from January 2- April 15, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Ringer   0.67
Nikita (F) :| :| :| 0.70
Gossip Girl :) :) :) :) 0.80
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.80
90210 :) :) :) :) 0.97
The Secret Circle :) :) :) :) 1.04
Supernatural (F)     1.06
One Tree Hill final season 1.09
Vampire Diaries      1.83

The end is near, but not near enough for my headline writing imagination in these weekly CW posts.

Writing these posts with no new news and the same three at risk shows in the headline has made it ever more difficult to come up with something new. Instead, I settled on something the Google searchers will appreciate.

Don't suggest I headline a post with "Something Will Be Renewed". Relatively nobody searches for that. ;)

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did the CW's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

OTH was the 2nd highest rated show on CW when it ended? That is so sad.

Ringer is doomed (thank God). Nikita is doomed. Gossip Girl should be but for some stupid Ostroff-nostalgia reason probably isn’t. Hart of Dixie should be but may or may not be depending on how many shows the CW wants to cancel – two or three.

90210 is safe just because the network can’t cancel four shows at once, allegedly.

The Secret Circle is safe, but some people insist it’s on the bubble for no known rational reason other than it wasn’t the hit it could have been.

Supernatural and Vampire Diaries are safe.

Personally I would leave Nikita alone on Friday. But the ratings say it will be cancelled. I still suspect TSC will be moved to Friday to replace it.

Who really cares if one would quit on watching CW if they would (deservingly) cancel HOD; not even 1/8 of American population really watches that network – no difference at all.

  • Devon

TSC is gonna flop harder than Nikita if moved to Friday next season. I can’t wait to see it flatter. Serves them right for renewing a struggling show.

  • Kevin

You could have made the title “The Vampire Diaries Certain to be Renewed”

I’m pretty tired of repeating myself, so all I can really say is that when Nikita’s gone from the CW, so am I. I’m hoping it gets saved somehow (another low-key network or Netflix), but otherwise the CW’s viewers are idiots in their choices of quality television.

  • Michael

Vampire Diaries, Secret Circle, Supernatural, and NIkita all return this week with new episodes. Will ratings remain the same? Time will only tell!

  • Tommy

Honestly I still think that CW will more or less clean house with their lower-performing series; especially since all of their pilots this season sounds incredibly strong. This is my prediction:

    – Ringer
    – Hart of Dixie
    – Nikita

    Reduced initial episode order:
    – Gossip Girl (final season, midseason)
    – Secret Circle (13 with option for more)
    – 90210 (13 with option for more; this is basically how ‘One Tree Hill’ was renewed almost every year under the CW)
    – America’s Next Top Model (only 1 cycle was ordered for next season)

    Full Season Renewals
    – The Vampire Diaries
    – Supernatural

“TSC is gonna flop harder than Nikita if moved to Friday next season. I can’t wait to see it flatter.”
This will be true. TSC does not even have an ounce of the loyal fanbase that Nikita does. But it will still be renewed no matter what

  • Tommy

One thing that TSC has going for it is that it’s ratings have stayed a lot more consistant than the other 2 newbies and seems like an obvious companion to “Supernatural” (even moreso that ‘The Vampire Diaries’ even if they are from the same author). Not to mention the show is produced rather cheapy (by CW standards).

  • Devon

that would be ideal but wouldn’t it cost them more money to pick up all these shows for 13 episode seasons in addition to new shows?

  • Michael

Secret Circle will easily be renewed, due to CW’s state. However, next season it could be seeing 0.5-0.6!

  • Charlie

Unfortunately CW executives do not know what they are doing series like Nikita and Ringer are poorly utilized, Ringer mainly because the best episodes in the series could improve hearing comes after reruns of 90210 and still compete with two reality show , The Voice and Dancing with the Stars.
It’s a shame more is almost certain that Ringer will be canceled.

  • Ray

I like Ringer because I have absolutely no idea what is going on and I prefer it when I think I’m stupid instead of thinking television is stupid.

    See: Horror Story, American

Also, I think they will convince the network to renew Ringer when tonight’s final episode informs us that they’re actually triplets.

  • Tommy

From one point of view yes it would, but from another it could a premptive way to save the budget for 18 episodes if the returning dramas rate lower than the new series. It will give them something to air in the Fall with the option to pick up additional episodes or fill the spot with something new.

  • Concerned Citizen

Here’s my schedule for next year:

    8:00 – Arrow
    9:00 – The Secret Circle

    8:00 – 90210
    9:00 – The Carrie Diaries

    8:00 – Gossip Girl (13 episodes)/Shelter (13 episodes)
    9:00 – America’s Next Top Model

    8:00 – The Vampire Diaries
    9:00 – The Selection

    8:00 – Nikita
    9:00 – Supernatural

Note: I am NOT some raving Nikita fan who’s deluding himself into thinking his favorite show will remain on the air. I’ve never seen the show, so I have no personal attachment to its survival. I just don’t see The CW picking up more than four shows next year, so I only see them cancelling two of their shows.

  • pete5125

True if CW was only going to renew shows with less than 4 seasons for 13 episodes their would be little to no incentive for WB/CBS to make them, they already are producing the shows for a loss, only to get syndication out of them….I don’t know though with their crazy Netflix’s deal it may work out better to do 13 episodes of everything outside of OTH and Ringer(only cause of it being an expensive show that neither CBS or WB owns, not the bad ratings everything outside of VD and Supernatural has awful ratings and even VD is nothing to brag about)

But if I understand the deal correctly Netflix’s gives them money based on the back catalog of old episodes that the current airing shows have on file so older shows hold more value, meaning might as well give everything 13 episodes and share the slots of the shows left on the schedule

    Mon: TVD/ Hunger Games rip-off
Tue: 90210 fall Hart of Dixie Spring/Carrie Diaries
    Wed: ATM/Beauty and Beast
    Thur: Green Arrow/Supernatural
    Fri: TSC/ Nikkita

back burner: Gossip Girl 13 episode final season, if you got the money Ringer as a 10 episode to 13 episode mini series

  • K8t

Why would Hart of Dixie get cancelled before Ringer?
I say keep Hart of Dixie and cancel Ringer!!

  • Devon

A schedule with TCD… no me gusta. Praying the pilot screening goes terribly.

  • gustavo

Rating-wise speaking:I would cancel every show on this network but TVD or move TVD to other network:NBC…perhaps…the ratings there looks very similar as TVD ratings and cancel the whole network:CW.
