The end is near, but not near enough for my headline writing imagination in these weekly CW posts.

Writing these posts with no new news and the same three at risk shows in the headline has made it ever more difficult to come up with something new. Instead, I settled on something the Google searchers will appreciate.

Don't suggest I headline a post with "Something Will Be Renewed". Relatively nobody searches for that. ;)

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did the CW's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    A twitter post of Joe Adalian(@tvmojoe):

    Boom! WBTV chief Bruce R. claims Nielsen isn’t properly measuring audiences for the CW. “We know people are watching,” he says.

  • Michael

    Sid, thanks for the article. Lol, poor CW they’re so desperate for recognition!

  • ChrisA

    Nikita needs to ge RENEWED!
    The best show on The CW beside TVD.

    Addicted to: Nikita and Revenge

    Can’t wait to see Ringer season finale. More like series finale unless a network picks it up. It’s gonna be an INTENSE/SHOCKING episode.

  • Jess

    KS – interesting…. I mean, I’ve always thought there’s something really OFF about the CW’s ratings. Are they anywhere near CBS or NBC’s? I doubt it but I also doubt 95% of their shows are in the 2 million range.

  • Sid

    I think if there’s anyone to blame its Dawn Ostroff and her execs. They’ve worked so hard in trying to focus on social media/Facebook/twitter that no one even bothers to watch their shows live.

  • KS

    @Jess

    Only one show, on CW is nearer to NBC’s ratings. And CBS gets 10 fold ratings than CW. CW gets 0.4 or 0.5 and CBS gets 4 and 5 in their demos. They are no way nearer.

  • Philº

    @KS and Steve
    I’m a guy too, and I watch TVD and Nikita. There’s women who watch football and sports, so it doesn’t matter.

  • Mae

    @ Sid, thanks!

    But since when did GG pull 1.7 million viewers? I guess they might be counting Live + 7 Day DVR ratings.

  • Sid

    Could this be the beginning of the end of The CW? With so many changes the network made since the beginning of the season to now:

    1. Netflix/Hulu Deal.
    2. That new ratings system.
    3. New episodes of each show available only 8 hours after they air.
    4. More original programming?

    Maybe CW won’t get to till 2016 to fix itself. I give it two more seasons if ratings don’t start improving.

  • KS

    @Sid

    I am pretty sure CW would find a hit show next year.

  • The End

    Nothing is a sure thing in the industry(Unless your ratings are amazing), ignore comments from actors from failing shows confident that they’l be back. Actors are the last people to know about a shows survival chance.

  • Mariz

    NO! DON’T CANCEL HART OF DIXIE FOR GOODNESS SAKE! IT’S A VERY GOOD SHOW! RENEW IT! RENEW! RENEW! RENEW!

  • Sid

    @KS

    I hope so. I used to watch a lot of their shows but as each season went by, it was crap after crap on The CW.

    Now I only watch 9O21O,SPN and NIKITA(this is the only new show in years that I actually care for).

    I tried all three new shows for them this Season and gave up on all of them. I hope they bring something good(like 9O21O/SPN/NIKITA) next Season because after my current three are gone, I’ll be done with this network.

  • KS

    @The End

    You are exactly right. I don’t think they even bother to, check the ratings of the episode. All they care about is the number in the pay checks and holidays in between their shoots.

  • Michael

    Sid, who knows maybe in 2 years everyone will own a Nielsen box lol.
    =)

  • Jake

    @KS & @Sid –

    Great! The chief of WB probably had his 50th bday, got his application for AARP membership and had his Nielsen box repossessed all on the same day!

    Anyway it gives Nikitites something new to hang their hats on. I didn’t read the article yet, so did it mention anything about get glue being the new rating system of choice? Maybe they are channeling @Bondoel’s frustration :)

  • KS

    @Sid
    J.J.Abrams show,(Cult, is it?) and Arrow look promising. CW would be happy if the show gets a steady 0.8/0.9 all through the season, unlike this season’s new shows, which began high and had fallen freely all along the season. CW needs one show above 1 and one show, which is steady with 0.8 and 0.9 all through the season.

  • Jake

    @Bill –

    What ever happened to the old adage that for lees than .72, CW won’t renew?
