The end is near, but not near enough for my headline writing imagination in these weekly CW posts.

Writing these posts with no new news and the same three at risk shows in the headline has made it ever more difficult to come up with something new. Instead, I settled on something the Google searchers will appreciate.

Don't suggest I headline a post with "Something Will Be Renewed". Relatively nobody searches for that. ;)

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did the CW's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Sid, all those things are supposed to help CW. At least Dawn realized the futre of live tv is very grim and that the trend of watching online, ondemand, dvring shows, talking about shows on fb/twitter was the future of tv just like Mark signed with Remtrak to measure online viewing.All the networks need to this.

  • Michael

    KS, no CW needs more than just one show above a 1.0! Realistically, 3 shows above 1.0 would be great for the CW! With the other shows ranging anywhere between 0.6-0.9! Of course, I’m referring to the new pilots, not the dead weight CW has now.

    Brandy, because of everything you just said, CW doesn’t have a bright future. Look at the other networks for example, they’re all doing fine(well, except NBC) for the most part(with live ratings/dvr/twitter/fb). But most importantly, they’re getting the live numbers. If everything you say is true, then CW wouldn’t be in so much trouble. Do you remember when a 0.5/0.6 used to be what CW shows got for a repeat? That was only two-three seasons ago. That’s how bad The CW is doing right now. You know it’s a sad day on The CW when two of TV’s most popular Television actresses(SMG and Bilson) can’t even save The CW and bring in ratings related to buzz.

  • KS

    @Jake

    Nielsen is almost accurate for CBS and appropriate for shows for shows another 3 major networks.
    But, CW is the most affected network due to the Nielsen’s antiquated ways of calculating viewers and that is a known fact. Just because we only have Nielsen doesn’t mean we can’t complain about it. I hope better systems come up soon and few more companies will invest into this business of calculating ratings.

    @Michael

    Thats impossible. But, Nielsen can try increasing the percentage of Nielsen viewers year to year at least 10% of total viewers. 1% of total viewers look very bad.

  • Dan

    I think that article is right about shows on the CW not getting the recognition they deserve in terms of viewers thanks to Neilson. I always hear about people watching the CW shows through Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc. Hell, look at the Eonline poll-Ringer, Nikita, The Secret Circle, and Hart of Dixie aka the bubble shows all made it into the top ten out of twenty (so far) and shows that get way more viewers are no longer in the running.

    I watching almost everything on The CW: Gossip Girl, Hart of Dixie, 90210, Ringer, The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle, and Supernatural. It just sucks that what I watch never gets counted for anything haha.

  • Rachel

    @KS

    Cult is Josh Schwartz’ show. Shelter is JJ Abrams.

    I think Arrow has the best chance at giving them a solid demo. The Selection will really depend on the quality of the show after it’s premiere episode. It could be another Secret Circle, no one wants that. If the CW is looking for another OTH, Shelter is the way to go. TCD well bomb, it just will. The other shows I can’t see doing too well. First Cut may surprise us.

  • Jake

    @KS –

    It was tongue in cheek for the most part, but there is a large demographic that is not being characterized. I agree that increase in sample size is a step in the right direction. With the increase in age for social security longer lifespans etc., however, 50 is no longer the scale down mode for retirement age unless you are part of the 1%. They are productive purchasers and should be treated as such.

  • Nick

    Cancel Ringer(even though like it, it gets bad ratings), Hart of Dixie, & Nikita, & give 90210 & GG final seasons of 13 epsiodes
    Renew TVD, Supernatural, TSC

  • BA

    OTH was NOT cancelled it ended its run. They could have easily had another season if the cast wanted to return. They simply wanted to move on.

  • Michael

    I think Arrow and The Selection are the only new pilots, I believe can attract a wide audience. Both have potential to join Vampire Diaries to be above 1.0 in the demo.

  • Kate

    BA is 100% correct about OTH. I believe that OTH was supposed to end last season as opposed to this one, but the actors felt like Mark and Co. pitched such strong stories (debatable) for their characters that they wanted to come back and do a shortened final season. I’m sure that if it were sticking around, it would be renewed.

    Correct me if I’m wrong, but I remember reading something a while ago about how The CW as a network isn’t broadcast in as many areas/homes as ABC/NBC/CBS? Which is where the term netlette comes from? Or is that referring to the fact that they only have 10 hours of original programming?

  • Kyle

    90210 should had been cancelled after the awful second season. GG is really boring this season, but it’s still the network’s 3rd most watched show in W18-34 and it’s steady in the A18-49 demo (0.7-0.5). TSC will sink in Friday next season. What people will say if it gets a 0.5 rating out of TVD? Ringer’s bad ratings can be because of the 3-weeks delay (to promote Remodeled) and the lack of promotion upon it’s return. Maybe Ringer could had worked on ABC, like Revenge did. Nikita might still get a 13-episodes final season. TVD and Supernatural are 100% returning next season.

  • Michael

    Kyle, Ringer may have had a 3 week delay, but it was the only show apart from (OTH) that aired 8 straight weeks without any breaks, unlike the other shows.

  • Kate

    All the other CW shows face long breaks, as they have for seasons, and they’ve all managed to bounce back. Ringer couldn’t, it failed as a show. The amount of money they put in to promote it along with high production costs and SMG’s salary make it an expensive product overall – one that isn’t delivering. Even with 8 weeks of all new episodes, its ratings still haven’t jumped. There’s no excuse for it.

    Arrow is DOA! Its produce from Greg Berlanti who create biggest movie flop for 2011 Green Lantern! Even john carter looks great for desney with this WB failure! And WB give Berlanti 200 millions $! The CW must try to attract big names and good writers and directors! But they need money for that! The Selection is biggest gamble they can create next TVD but also van flop! Again no names in the backstage with experience, proven…. already created hits and developed successful tv series! Its WB on their own….not good!

    Shelter will be low budjet show! Not a chance for hit! Will be some hybrid between felicity/OTH to keep fans happy!

    I think CW is dead! And i am glad! Its really bad network! Cable tv have better shows than CW!

  • Brandy

    Sid, have you noticed how much lower the other brodcast networks ratings are? Its cause more & more people are dvring shows, watching ondemand, online, on mobile devices,watching on itunes, hulu,netflix, ect so they can watch thier shows when they want, not when were/theyre told to.Ive read hundreds of comments on line this season of people saying “i watch my shows online/ondemand or dvr em and watch when I have time/when I want cause I want to avoid commercials and/or im not watching this when the networks tell me”Even new shows ive read a lot of “im dvring this new show but saving them on mydvr til I have time to watch and I know its been renewed so as not to get invested in a new show that will be cancelled, ending on a cliffhanger.”.People arent watching live tv that much now and with Neilson homes so few compared to 7 billion people on Earth, Neilson is no longer an accurate viewership measuring stick. This trend of not watching live tv started a couple years ago,but is starting to peak and if the other networks dont follow cws lead of counting non live viewership and making thier shows available on diffrerent platforms(online, ondemand,netflix ect.) they too will soon be at cws levels viewer wise if another better more accurate ratings system dosent become available soon, one thatdoes include all ways of tv show viewing and social media, cause its very popular to go on fb or twitter during or right after a show and talk about it. Why do you think these non traditional non_ live viewing options come from(online, ondemand, itunes, netfllix?) why do you think cw signed with Remtrak? to measure online viewing.

    Also, Sid, yes several nbc shows average 3_5 millionviewers, Rock Center got a 0.9 reccently, then theres the the Thurs. Comdies. But look at abc, Bachelor &Dancing are lower this season than last as is Voice on nbc and Idolon fox.Fox is having a hard time with thier frshman shows especialy this year_terra nova & ihmtd cancelled, breaking in re_cancelled, Touch &Alcatraz not doing well and Idol down 15% ,House getting less than 6, million viewers,Raising Hope getting 4_5 million which is dismal. Fringe and several nbc shows are doing the samggje or barley better than VD on CW.
