The end is near, but not near enough for my headline writing imagination in these weekly CW posts.

Writing these posts with no new news and the same three at risk shows in the headline has made it ever more difficult to come up with something new. Instead, I settled on something the Google searchers will appreciate.

Don't suggest I headline a post with "Something Will Be Renewed". Relatively nobody searches for that. ;)

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did the CW's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Anyone else find Petar more annoying than Mikey? lol

“Sid, have you noticed how much lower the other brodcast networks ratings are? Its cause more & more people are dvring shows, watching ondemand, online, on mobile devices, watching on itunes, hulu, netflix, ect so they can watch thier shows when they want,….”

That’s not the case. People are still mostly watching TV live and on regular TVs, they’re just watching less broadcast and more cable. That’s a trend that’s been going on for 30 years.

Rosenblum cited Nielsen ratings for the CW Network as a particular source of frustration. The CW, which is co-owned by Warner Bros. and CBS, carries shows that primarily target teens and young adults, an audience whose viewing habits have proved hard to track.

Though he was careful not to bash Nielsen, noting that the ratings company is “trying,” he also noted that Nielsen still uses handwritten diaries to gather ratings information in much of the country.

Bill, thats only part of what im hearing from people here, mostly what I read is “idvr evrything ,I watch everything online,I watch everything ondemand.Nielson isnt isnt accurate anymore cause people dont watch tv live anymore.I dont watch anything live”. But cable is a major cause.

According to the renew/cancel ,aside from Gossip Girl (Promised that final farewell season), everything below 90210 will be cancelled (Hart Of Dixie, Ringer, and Nikita). To be blunt if they wanted to they could cancel 90210 as well and bring in four new shows but that would be quite an undertaking for this small struggling network. Save Nikita for its’ fanbase? The fanbase doesn’t show up in the ratings’ tally in the end. Something that is true for any about to be cancelled show.

  • Sid

“Also, Sid, yes several nbc shows average 3_5 millionviewers, Rock Center got a 0.9 reccently, then theres the the Thurs. Comdies. But look at abc, Bachelor &Dancing are lower this season than last as is Voice on nbc and Idolon fox.Fox is having a hard time with thier frshman shows especialy this year_terra nova & ihmtd cancelled, breaking in re_cancelled, Touch &Alcatraz not doing well and Idol down 15%”

The Bachelor and Dancing could easily be down because of the cast or some personal conflict. Since you wanna talk about reality, lets use CW’s flagship reality “hit” ANTM. Look at how much viewers the show has lost between “one-cycle”! I’m talking about a 50% drop minimum in total viewers and key demos(including CW’s precious Women demos). Most of those shows you listed for FOX started off pretty strong but they did bad because people lost interest; how does that pertain to broadcast television taking the supposed “nose-dive” you’re talking about? The premiere numbers were pretty good and people knew the shows did exist; they just never cared to continue tuning in.

“House getting less than 6, million viewers,Raising Hope getting 4_5 million which is dismal.”

So what? Aren’t they still rating just fine in the A 18-49 demo regardless of their total viewership? It just means that the show skews a young audience. Look at CBS’s Unforgettable; it averages about 12-13 million viewers an episode and only registers a 1.8-2.0 for A18-49, while CBS’s Hawaii Five-0 barely gets 10 million total viewers and gets a 2.5-2.8 in A18-49.

i have a Question for Bill Gorman

Where did you get this The Renew / Cancel Index from?

  • charlie

Sorry but Nikita is bad and Hart of dixie is reall good talking about the ratings…. well, renew HoD and ao revior Nikita

  • Linda

Why do people think The Secret Circle and Supernatural make a good pairing? Is it just because they both deal with the ‘supernatural’? I watch both but I don’t think they would mesh well.

  • Sid

    @Linda

I don’t think they’ll pair well at all either, but something has to go there if NIKITA’s cancelled.

  • Sid

This is gonna do worse than REMODELED!:D

  • Justun121

I think both Hart and Nikita have a good chance of coming back.

Gossip Girl: maybe One Tree Hill-style 13-episode final season.

Supernatural will have a full final season but probably the year after next. It may even make it to 10 seasons.

    Ringer cancelled.

So Ringer and GG leave room for two new series?

I expect something a *bit* unusual of the CW this year. We’ll have to wait and see what “it” is…

“Where did you get this The Renew / Cancel Index from?”

    From my unique genius. ;)

Seriously, after a little experimenting on what happened in the 2007-8 season, we worked out the initial process which has been refined each season since.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Bill, thats only part of what im hearing from people here, mostly what I read is “idvr evrything ,I watch everything online,I watch everything ondemand.Nielson isnt isnt accurate anymore cause people dont watch tv live anymore.I dont watch anything live”. But cable is a major cause.”

    “hearing from people here” eh?

Sounds like the a firm basis for making conclusions.

  • Freyja

I gotta agree Linda neither TSC/SPN will do well together. I think SPN best pairing was with Smallville. So I think Arrow/SPN will work out better, but no way the CW will premiere a new show on a Friday Night.

@Sid- Yeah that was bad, almost as bad as LA Complex ;)

I still think they are going to cancel 3 shows; with OTH gone already that leaves two spots open. Which could go to either Ringer, HOD, or Nikita. The only saving grace for Nikita is it’s on Friday and they won’t air a new show that night.

If Mark wants to be really aggressive he will change the entire schedule around make some drastic moves. Otherwise they will be in the exact same position as last year.

  • WB

    @ Sid

How do you know?! It might actually suprise ya! ha (but obviously that’s your opinion, I respect that)

It reminds me of Jersey Shore in a way! :) It would be nice for The CW to premiere with at least a .5! or above

  • Dahne

@Linda – I don’t think Supernatural and Secret Circle go at all together but they’ll have to renew SC. They don’t have enough money to cancel it too and they sure won’t waste a time slot they are hoping to build on. Friday is the only night that makes sense for SC.

  • Sid

    @WB

I don’t know it just looks like the typical CW reality crap. The only reality show I commend them on is The Star Next Door because at this point, every broadcast network attempted a singing competition show so CW might as well try their luck with their own.

  • Rachel

The CW should just quit with reality shows. They all flop. I’m surprised they’re still trying.

  • One @ Bill Gorman

How about “Hart of Dixie Bleeding Out”?
