I probably should have moved The Finder to "certain to be canceled" immediately after it was moved to Friday night, but I had other shows I wanted to put into the headline and I was gone last week and wrote my previous Fox renew / cancel post way in advance. Nevertheless, The Finder's woeful ratings on Friday confirm the obvious. It's certain to be canceled.

How can Fringe, with similarly woeful ratings, be just a "toss up"? Read last week's post about syndication if you're wondering.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did FOX's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I can’t even believe how frickin stupid so many people are. K I love Family Guy but Neapolitan WTF….only a truly RETARTED monkey would like that. Also they keep Glee because the little 10yr old girls (& boys who want to b girls) “JUST LOVE IT!!!!” OMG what the heck. Put on a show like The Finder where it’s actually good and I can watch it with anyone of my kids, knowing that we will be fully entertained and I won’t have to plug there ears or make them close there eyes AND THAT’S WHAT IS CANCELED!!! Don’t get me wrong I love shows like Bones and Sons of anarchy, Breaking Bad to shows like Raising Hope. But it seems like now any show that doesn’t show some kind of, well something gross, or have sex be the main topic it’s quickly cancelled. A year ago the show The Defenders was canceled, I mean excellent actors great stories and canceled. More SH** shows are kept while so many highly entertaining shows that wow I can watch it with ALL my kids are booted. What is wrong with you people? If there’s not sex, drugs, gangs ect CANCLED. I watch a huge verity of shows and most I can watch with my husband and we love them but am I the only parent in America that would actually care to be able to watch a diecent show with my whole family? I am just amazed at how over the past few years many excellent tv shows have came out where I could say “Sure, come and watch this with mommy.” to even my youngest, well they never survive unless they are like Greys Anatomey (which is a good show but do you really think its appropriate for a 9yr old? My youngest he Does not want sex in a show. My point I believe is clear but just to make sure some of the dull minded out there didn’t get it……it’s sad that this country cares more about sex and drinking than just playing good tv. I’m not saying all shows should be this way but why not one. We love Bones and Law & Order but even in them my kids will close there eyes. So to see a show like the finder be cut is Sad. Take a look at your tv guide. Not counting cartoons or Christian channels really how many tv shows can you find that are entertaining and a show anyone of any age (and for you stupid people I’m not talking about a baby or even a 3yr old) can watch without someone secretly f****** in the next room, blood and guts everywhere or even just not talking about vibrators can u actually find? I say this as someone who loves Justified, and Sparticus as well as True Blood and weeds. But not one regular prime time network will keep a show that’s not flaunting sex or partying or some sort of violence. What is wrong with you all. Man I know I’m not perfect and who am I to judge. All I want is to be able to count on someone to keep a show that’s good even if the ratings were a bit low because a idiot put it up against another show that’s been around for yrs and has to huge of a following. I honestly believe if the finder was originally better placed it would not be canceled. You people are a disappointment but I guess I should not be surprised. Greed does all it can to keep people where it wants them because it can. How sad

Plz excuse ne spelling errors. I’m on my iPod and if I hit the wrong button it puts words in incorrectly. Also I read that people couldn’t understand The Finder, oh I had to add this. My 9yr old son, my 13yr old daughter and 15yr old daughter and even my developmentally delayed 18yr old son ALL understood it and none of us were confused at all. I guess maybe I should have read that post first because I now feel as though I have a better idea of why so many shows that are excellent are canceled…. It’s simply put (so as not to confuse anyone) there are way to many really freakin dumb people. I guess the tv networks realize this so they have to have sex, drugs ect. People are not smart enough to watch tv it’s like the differance between reading an actual book and reading a child picture book… To many so very stupid out there they can only see the pictures!!!

  • tvfreak

@tscchope: Of course I know that. What exactly are you getting at?

  • Dennis

    @Rebecca
Oh no, Season 1 is very good!! It just takes a few episodes to find its footing… What I’m saying is, even though season 1 is good… compared to the other seasons it just gets blown out of the water.
IMO (of course) the seasons just get better as they go on… but I would say season 3 in particular is absolutely brilliant

I am disappointed that The Finder is being canceled, once again the network moves the show around instead of letting it take hold and gain some audience viewing. It is fresh, funny and imaginative and family friendly. Love the characters and I hope another station picks them up! Also, Fringe is compelling, intriguing and suspenseful with great acting and should go at least another few years. Love Peter, Dr. Bishop and Olivia as well as Astrid!

    @Dennis
Good to know. It’s too bad it’s not streaming on Netflix. It’s disc only. But I moved disc one up higher in the queue.

Voting in the Elimination Game now closed on this thread. It has carried over to the newest r/c index thread on the home page. Check for new rules on page 2 of the comments there.

Thanks for mentioning Back To You – I didn’t know it had some unaired episodes. I’m hoping they’re on the dvds so I added them to my Netflix queue. I liked that show for the most part, mostly the scenes with Ty Burrell and the short chubby guy who played the manager.

The DVD has the complete series. The last episode they taped, “Hostage Watch” (which was meant to roll to the next season had there been one) was probably the best one, IMO — even though I didn’t like the pointless cast changes FOX strong-armed them into making. (The replacement daughter couldn’t even talk properly. And she was supposed to be, what, 8?!) Unfortunately, when the show got cancelled, 1 script got junked (20th 86’d the taping) and that’s not even counting the 6 episodes they lost because of the strike. They had a 24 order and only did 17. There were also 2 earlier episodes — 1 of which was taped pre-strike — that were left unaired for no reason. “Masked Scheduler” needed to stockpile episodes when the strike struck, that was the reason. Well, one of them got stockpiled right into the garbage can.

I think that the Finder should stay … it is entertaining and the quirkiness makes me laugh. Hope they might reconsider.

  • Riff Rafferty

    what a ridiculous comment
There are plenty of tv shows with male leads

Oh, yeah. Thanks for reminding me of the other thing men shouldn’t be allowed to be in charge of. The computer. Because some men are so dumb, they write things like “what a ridiculous comment There are plenty of tv shows with male leads”

  • Dawn

I like The Finder. The cast has a great chemistry and I dig the quirkiness.

Alcatraz lost me a couple of episodes in. I had hope for it but it just seemed to hover over SOMETHING but not give much. Not enough to keep me interested anyway.

Napoleon Dynamite was just an all around poor idea. Please go away.

    Still a Fringe fan

  • Mimi

I cannot believe they would cancel The Finder as it really is a good show. The fault is with the network for moving the show all over the place and not giving it a real chance to succeed.
    I will truly miss it.

  • hoping against the odds

Sigh, still holding out hope that the finder will be renewed. But much like firefly FOX torpedoed the show by showing the episodes BADLY out of order. Even a well written show will have a ton of issues building interest in characters when shown in the wrong order :(

  • Holly

Come on the finder is awesome!!!!

  • Ryker

The Finder was a very good show. It was well written and covered all the bases from action, romance, and comedy. It figures that Fox would give up on a good show.

  • Lynn

The Finder is a fun quirky show that need MUCH better advertising. Ideally it should have aired right after “Bones” for several weeks to attract viewers and cement loyalty before being move to any other time slots. It is a crying shame that a show like this gets killed but crap like the “Kardashians” gets to live on other networks/cable

  • Karen

I am so sad to hear that “The Finder” is possibly going to be cancelled! Yes, as in every show that gets switched to fridays, it is definitely the kiss of death! This show has great characters with great chemistry! Unlike all the crime dramas that are so doom and gloom and predictable, this show always has very interesting story lines, and a comical side as well! As in any movie or television show i watch, I always like to be “taken away” from every days problems, and get absorbed in the show! “The Finder” is a show that is so entertaining, that i do forget about problems while I’m watching it! I can’t believe fox is going to let this show slip through and end, without giving it more of a fighting chance! I for one, will definitely be saddened and lose faith in the network channel that i watch the most!

  • Linda

I am so sad. The Finder is a fun show with interesting characters who continue to develop. Why wouldn’t fox give them a real chance to grow an audience? Many good shows have taken time to find their place. The shows that are kept are always so much more inane.
The Touch also was different and thought-provoking. Again, it sounds like it is gone. Shows that are quirky and force one to think seem to be victims of the fox ax. Like the other tv stations, it appears that fox wants to keep only shows that follow the same boring concept, ie silly sit-coms, goofy dramas with endings that the elementary school set can predict by the end of the first commercial. I guess truly entertaining shows that challenge the mind or please the soul are out of style at fox.

  • Colleen

I love “The Finder and Alcatraz” then again I love Human Target what is it with Fox that they bring in a great show and then kill it after moving them around, never giving the views a warning!
Hope these two stay on the schedule for many years both are excellent

  • Susan

I love the Finder and want it to be renewed. It’s a fun show. Walter has such a great mind, love the Rube Goldberg creations, and the other characters are captivating too. What do I need to do to help it be renewed?
