Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2011-12 season in May, 2012. (includes results from January 2- April 15, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Fringe (F) :| :| :| 0.50
I Hate My Teenage Daughter* canceled 0.61
Breaking In canceled 0.66
The Cleveland Show renewed 0.67
Allen Gregory * canceled 0.72
Raising Hope renewed 0.87
Bob's Burgers :| :| :| 0.87
The Finder  0.89
Terra Nova * canceled 0.90
Alcatraz   0.95
American Dad renewed 0.97
Napoleon Dynamite* :| :| :| 1.06
Bones renewed 1.08
House final season 1.12
The Simpsons renewed 1.22
Touch :) :) :) :) 1.32
New Girl renewed 1.35
Family Guy renewed 1.38
Glee renewed 1.41

I probably should have moved The Finder to "certain to be canceled" immediately after it was moved to Friday night, but I had other shows I wanted to put into the headline and I was gone last week and wrote my previous Fox renew / cancel post way in advance. Nevertheless, The Finder's woeful ratings on Friday confirm the obvious. It's certain to be canceled.

How can Fringe, with similarly woeful ratings, be just a "toss up"? Read last week's post about syndication if you're wondering.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did FOX's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

The Finder is a good show but never given a chance.

It had the best drama timeslot on FOX.

The move to Friday killed the show

You have the cause and effect wrong. The show was dead, so it was moved to Friday.

didn’t have enough time to grow.

Last four episodes prior to FOX announcing it was being pulled – 2.8, 2.4, 2.2, 2.0.

FYI, for anybody who’s going to be making fantasy schedules: the pilots for the Mindy Kaling and Kevin Williamson shows have been given names. The Mindy Kaling one is called Mindy (how clever) and the Kevin Williamson one is called Mastermind. With that in mind, here’s my schedule:

    8:00 – Glee
    9:00 – Touch

    8:00 – Raising Hope
    8:30 – Like Father
    9:00 – New Girl
    9:30 – Mindy

    8:00 – The X-Factor/American Idol
    9:30 – Little Brother (13 episodes)/American Idol

    8:00 – The X-Factor/American Idol
    9:00 – Mastermind/The Asset

    8:00 – reality
    9:00 – Bones

I think Touch, as it had a big premiere, without AI would have drew something like a 2.6 and then probably slid to 2.0 or worse, but that’s still better than The Finder, which it started with 1.7 and then got higher by AI. Without it, I think it would have slipped towards 1.3s, but that’s just an assumption of course.

TVWise and TVLine have declared that Fringe is to be renewed by a fifth season. I know, I know, you deeply want to believe that Fringe will be cancelled, but you may want to prepare for the renewal announcement so it won’t strike you that hard. Just saying ;)

  • Percysowner

@were123 I truly love Fringe and if it gets a 13 episode renewal I will be overjoyed. That said the only declaration that counts saying Fringe will be renewed will be made by FOX and only FOX. TVWise and TVLine may be right. Or the show may have been in negotiation and last Friday’s drop in ratings changed things. Whatever is going on TVWise and TWLine are not renewing Fringe. The only entity that can do that is FOX and as of now, they aren’t talking. Also, the fact that everyone associated with the show has admitted that 2 endings have been shot, one for renewal and one for cancellation makes me think that nothing is set yet.

  • tvfreak

Friday death for The Finder + High chances of Fringe returning for a fifth and final season a la Chuck + Possibility of Fringecatraz Fridays = :D :D :D :D :D :D

Bringing the game over from the last thread, not a new vote:

    FRINGE – 55 (+1)
    ALCATRAZ – 18 (-1)
    NEW GIRL – 25 (-3)
    TOUCH – 37 (+3)

  • Ray

    GO FRINGE!!!!!!!!!!!!

    (because nobody’s said it yet)

  • Tom

@Bill: The Flintstones thing sounded far more like an effective series order than a standard pilot.

@Mike: Interesting that AD is (atm, anyway) over. The Fall ’13 animated cupboards are looking pretty bare.

  • were123

I know, it’s not an official announcement, but all seems to be leading towards that. 0.9 is bad, but ratings are rather irrelevant now, WB fees seems to be so low that it just won’t matter. I’m optimistic, and I accept that the show might not come back and we all will have to sit and watch the “in case of emergency break the glass” finale, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. What bother me is that, while I accept that cancellation may come, people are still saying that Fringe is doomed, while options for it’s renewal have come and showed themselves. I think of Fringe right now as ‘likely renewal’, that said I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s cancelled, but I would be surprise, after all the efforts that have been made to keep it in the air for one more season. And it will, if any show can live beyond these ratings is Fringe (just like Chuck did)

  • Bill Gorman

“@Bill: The Flintstones thing sounded far more like an effective series order than a standard pilot.”

Even so. Until something gets announced at the upfront, we don’t care.

Once we post the next Fall’s announced schedule, all those shows enter into our “system” ;)

  • Cand.B

    that’s a pity. i like the finder very much…:(

  • me

I didn’t like the Finder at first. and then it kind of grew on me. I watched it on Thursdays at first. and then I followed it to its new timeslot on Fridays too. I especially like Michael Clarke Duncan in the role of Leo. he does a nice job! and the rest of the cast is a lot of fun too. and the stories they have are also interesting.

  • Stephen

Touch likely renewed although it has continued to drop so it has enough time to fizzle out before end of season and get cancelled – we’ll see.

Will see what happens with Fringe – I’d say it’s less than 50/50 for a season 5 but if any show can beat the odds it’s Fringe!

  • Avery

    8:00 – Bones
    9:00 – Touch

    8:00 – Raising Hope
    8:30 – Prodigy Bully
    9:00 – New Girl
    9:30 – Let It Go

    8:00 – The X-Factor/American Idol

    8:00 – The X-Factor/American Idol
    9:00 – Glee

    8:00 – Living Loaded
    8:30 – My Little Brother
    9:00 – Hell’s Kitchen

  • Ultima

American Dad! Is out of production. Artists are being let go every day. There are about a
Season’s worth of shows stockpiled, then that’s it. And it does better consistently than Cleveland

It also has a much better timeslot. During the fall, they had roughly the same ratings at 9:30 on doubleheader weeks.

They have to cancel one of them, because Seth MacFarlane obviously can’t do four shows at the same time, as well as to make room for new shows, and it does make sense to cancel the show finishing its 8th season rather than the show finishing its 4th.

Personally, I think they should have stuck with American Dad and wrapped up The Cleveland Show after just four seasons; but, I understand the decision if they do cancel it.

  • Ultima

The Fall ’13 animated cupboards are looking pretty bare.

It’s possible they’ll only run four animated shows in the fall, going with an hour of repeats on non-NFL doubleheader weeks…
    8:00 – The Simpsons
    8:30 – The Flintstones
    9:00 – Family Guy
9:30 – Bob’s Burgers (or The Cleveland Show if Bob’s bombs this fall)

Then in the spring they can debut a new show and kick the 9:30 one back to 7:30. It’s also possible that they keep both Cleveland and Bob’s for that season.

  • RON
