Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2011-12 season in May, 2012. (includes results from January 2- April 15, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index

Raising Hope renewed 0.87
Bob's Burgers :| :| :| 0.87
The Finder  0.89
Terra Nova * canceled 0.90
Alcatraz   0.95
American Dad renewed 0.97
Napoleon Dynamite* :| :| :| 1.06

House final season 1.12
The Simpsons renewed 1.22
Touch :) :) :) :) 1.32
New Girl renewed 1.35
Family Guy renewed 1.38
Glee renewed 1.41

I probably should have moved The Finder to "certain to be canceled" immediately after it was moved to Friday night, but I had other shows I wanted to put into the headline and I was gone last week and wrote my previous Fox renew / cancel post way in advance. Nevertheless, The Finder's woeful ratings on Friday confirm the obvious. It's certain to be canceled.

How can Fringe, with similarly woeful ratings, be just a "toss up"? Read last week's post about syndication if you're wondering.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did FOX's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I just wish that they would put Bones back on thursday night. before it even aired on monday I thought it was a stupid idea to change it to mondays after it’s been on thursdays it’s whole run–Dumb. besides, what do they expect for monday night ratings when it’s up against so much..But thank god it’s already renewed..Here’s to hoping next year they put it back where it belongs on thursday night!

It is a pity that The finder didn’t go well. But yet again fox is being dumb. you don’t switch a new show that was already getting mediocre ratings for the network to friday night–The timeslot of death. I knew it wasn’t going to do well it was pretty much a given but even on thursday nights those ratings were still dismal for fox..I would’ve traded it to NBC.

Although I would cancel both finder and alcatraz..they both have dismal ratings and are losing viewers fast.

  • Jamie

And another thing I forgot about bones–It’s stupid to move any show towards the end of the year to a different timeslot after it’s been away for months so considering everything they’ve had to endure I say that their rating aren’t bad at all.

  • Migzy

Bones ratings should be ok on Monday night. They seem steady with the ratings prior to the switch.

I think the Finder was doomed from its absolutely awful initial spinoff episode of Bones so many didn’t bother to watch it when it started on its own. I was expecting to hate it from the get go, but I found the actual show was much better than the spinoff episode.

Also, while it is following AI, thursday at 9pm you are going against Grey’s Anatomy and Person of Interest(which turned into a strong new show). Hard to get going against competition like that.

Same with ABC on Thursday at 8PM, going against Big Bang Theory, Vampire Diaries, and AI, does any new show stand a chance?

Hey, TVLine just posted that a Fringe renewal is almost a done deal, for what it’s worth to you. (Considering what you said about them on the NBC page, apparently not a lot)

  • Richard Steven Hack

And TVLine is on the same brain damaging drugs most of the Fringe fans are on – something Walter cooked up, presumably… :-)

Look at the index again. Fringe has HALF the ratings that canceled Terra Nova and likely canceled Alcatraz have! Most of the shows above it have been CANCELED already!

Seriously, I mean delusional is one thing, psychotically so is another…

    FRINGE – 59 (+2)
    RAISING HOPE – 31 (-1)
    ALCATRAZ – 16 (-2)
    NEW GIRL – 25 (+1)
    TOUCH – 33

The finder is awsome, takes a show or 2 to get used to but then next thing you know your recording all the episodes.

I can’t believe they cancelled Terra Nova that show was amazing. Lets take a show off the air that has a little imagination and throw another crappy reality show on. I can’t think of anything better than working all day then coming home to watch idiots argue on tv. Like life is not bad enough dealing with idiots we have to watch them on tv also.

“I guess it was a little to quirky and intelligent for the masses.”

Thank you for the belly laugh which is more than The Finder ever provided. It isn’t quirky, it’s called absurdity. It’s perfectly ok to leave the plots in the absurd realm in a comedic farce but they forgot to add the comedy to the farce. Intelligence would beg a question when these guys waltz away from homicide and other crime scenes without so much as a by your leave much less a call to 911.

Please let Fridays ratings be Friday FOX Fringe Finder Falls Fabulously

  • The Hafk

Oh, didn’t know about that Flintstones thing. Still, though.

Even if American Dad is canceled, the unaired episodes will probably still air. If not on Fox, then probably on Adult Swim (Like what happened with King of the Hill’s remaining five episodes)

  • MoonAngelwings

I love The Finder and Breaking In (They need to get rid of (Megan M.) Saw Touch, love Sutherland, but show no interesting. Alcatraz is horrible.

  • iknowgoodshows

seems like Fox is 50/50 on canceling fringe…the even worse ratings slide is making fox hesitant of renewing for final 13….outlook still a tossup…but if ratings stay under 1.0…consider dead..rightfully so :)

  • Mike Tiefenbacher

I like Touch, but The Finder is a much better show. One aspect that Fox execs must like is formula; so far, all the Touch episodes have followed the same template (three seemingly disconnected stories remarkably converge by the end of the show), just as House always had five misdiagnoses before they figured it out. Alcatraz, sadly, also seemed to fall into the formula category, and I think suffers because of it. Neither Bones nor The Finder (or Fringe, for that matter) do that. I wonder how well The Finder might have done had Bones been around to pair it with all season.

”We might hear something tomorrow. I know you’re all anxious.” – Tweeted on the 16th of April, still nothing as of yet though. But Wyman could be busy writing. Also the title for the finale has been changed from:

    ”Endgame, Parts 1 & 2”

    ”Brave New World, Parts 1 & 2”

Seems rather odd that they’d change the title at the last minute, maybe they know something we don’t? ”Endgame” sounded like a SERIES finale title as apposed to a SEASON finale title, I know titles get changed a lot in TV but this seems really odd, even for them.

In any event I hope that Jole’s tweets about a positive 13 episode final season turn out to be true! Even to just piss on Richard Steven Hack’s chips lol

  • Rob

Sick and tired of these new shows not even given a chance to build an audience. You wonder why the ratings are so low? It’s because who wants to start following a show only for it to get cancelled .Way too many shows are cancelled and not even given that chance. No idea why networks cancel shows only to replace it with yet another show that people won’t give a chance because of this reason and cancel that and so on. Too many people are taping them now rather then watching them live because of this reason

It is sad that a good show like this that is NOT REALITY lame garbage is going to get cancelled . I refuse to watch any reality garbage as the network can make it look whatever way they want it to look

  • Robert Ariadne

I hope so too. I can’t stand Hack (appropriate name, though).

  • psychic

It seems to me that everyone is assuming that Fringe will get a 13 episode final season, everyone’s assuming it’s a done deal–but it isn’t. :c

  • Cory

    FRINGE – 57 (-2)
    ALCATRAZ – 18 (+2)
    NEW GIRL – 26 (+1)
    TOUCH – 32 (-1)

  • Max

I know what FOX shows will come back or won’t come back for the 2012-13 season:

Already renewed: The Cleveland Show, Raising Hope, American Dad, Bones, The Simpsons, New Girl, Family Guy, & Glee

    Renewed: Touch

Toss up: Fringe, Bob’s Burgers, & Napoleon Dynamite

    Cancelled: The Finder & Alcatraz

House – we will miss you

  • Simon

The optimists won last year, who’s to say we won’t win again? Everything we’ve heard so far about renewal prospects for Fringe has been positive, I just wanna see this site on the day of an actual renewal announcement :D
