Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2011-12 season in May, 2012. (includes results from January 2- April 15, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index

Raising Hope renewed 0.87
Bob's Burgers :| :| :| 0.87
The Finder  0.89
Terra Nova * canceled 0.90
Alcatraz   0.95
American Dad renewed 0.97
Napoleon Dynamite* :| :| :| 1.06

House final season 1.12
The Simpsons renewed 1.22
Touch :) :) :) :) 1.32
New Girl renewed 1.35
Family Guy renewed 1.38
Glee renewed 1.41

I probably should have moved The Finder to "certain to be canceled" immediately after it was moved to Friday night, but I had other shows I wanted to put into the headline and I was gone last week and wrote my previous Fox renew / cancel post way in advance. Nevertheless, The Finder's woeful ratings on Friday confirm the obvious. It's certain to be canceled.

How can Fringe, with similarly woeful ratings, be just a "toss up"? Read last week's post about syndication if you're wondering.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did FOX's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

John A, I don’t believe Season 5 or a partial Season 5 is a con, because if Fox and WB were going to cancell the show, don’t you think they would have done it at least a month or 2 months ago.
I mean (and I’m saying this a a big Fringe Fan) the numbers admittenly haven’t been great, and it would have given the network ample reason to do so, but yet we’re not heard a word. So my positive side says maybe Fox wants to send Fringe out on its own terms (like Chuck)by giving it a final 13 episode 5 season.
That way the network satisfies the Fans, Cast and Crew by letting them finally tell their story. And by doing this the Network gets the accolades for letting this happen and maintains those viewers for any other program Fox may replace fringe with, when the curtain finally falls

Bet Fox regrets letting go of three hour longs last year that each did better that any of their new hour long shows, save Touch. Lie to Me and Human Target weren’t that expensive and could have stuck around easily. 24 was really only let go because Defer made $800k an episode.

Was real excited about Touch and Alcatraz, and I ended up liking the Finder better than both of those shows. Not a big loss, but cancel those other two and get Jack Bauer back.

Virginia: That’s true. It seems like every week we learn a new lesson.

i think its crap that terra nova was cancelled i thought it was an awesome show, better than some of the ones there renewing what is fox thinking? they keep stupid shows and get rid of the good blah i guess thats why i don’t watch fox

Originally, I wanted to watch this show, which I thought of as the quirky Bones spin-off, but the name is serious/dull/procedural that I kept not realising this was THAT show (if that makes sense?). So firstly, I think the name was a problem, it just faded into the mix… second mistake, ditching Saffron Burrows from the cast. BIG mistake. If test audiences hated her accent in the pilot, they should have rewritten the part. The actress is unusual/memorable, seems intelligent, with a sense of humour- and her replacement in the cast seemed (not surprisingly) younger, perkier & more generic/bland. When you want to watch a show because you like the male and female lead, & someone upstairs at the network then removes what I thought of as one of the main drawcards before it airs (but after the original promos), well, it doesn’t bode well, & definitely doesn’t inspire me to take the time to watch it… I was sold on Geoff Stults & Saffron Burrows to begin with!

Don’t be silly. Reilly regrets nothing. Lone Star? Nope. Uncancelling “Breaking In” in a package deal (with a project that didn’t even go to pilot), just so it could be re-cancelled after 5 broadcasts? Nope. Cancelling “Back to You” (and flushing 3 episodes) because he didn’t like it, freeing up ABC to kickstart a comedy block in 5 seconds flat? Nope. Replacing “Back to You” with “Do Not Disturb,” the first cancellation of the 2008-2009 season? Nope. Dumping “Law & Order: Trial by Jury” in order to make room for runaway successes like “Inconceivable” and “The Book of Daniel” (whose ad breaks were the saddest thing I have ever seen in my 35+ years of watching ad-supported television)? Nope. Bouncing the original “Law & Order” out of a time slot it held for 14 years to make room for even more runaway successes like “Kidnapped” and “Heist”? Nope. Letting ABC have “Secret Millionaire”? Nope. Dumping successful and cheap reality shows because Joss Whedon’s loser fans are loud and annoying? Launching 2 insider shows at the same time that had numbers in the title and were both about the makings of sketch comedy shows? Making a complete shambles of the NBC schedule to the point where viewers finally got fed up trying to find out when their show was on that they simply stopped watching? Nope, nope, nope. Why would the man regret anything? He’s simply BRILLIANT. Birdcage-lining publications like Vulture say it, so it must be true.

Please dont cancel The Finder! It is the most fun show of any show on this season and my husband and I look forward to watching every week! We also watch Fringe every week as well, but cant understand a thing that goes on, yet we still watch because it is a quirky show and we like quirky. Fox has some quirky and really good shows on but like NBC they dont know a good one when they see it. They just keep putting on those stupid Reality shows! We can go to cable if we want to watch reality shows! We mainly stick to USA network since they have absolutely the best shows on TV and most of them never get canceled. PUT FINDER ON USA!!!!!

Fox’s scripted average is really only a 2.19 for the spring? That seems quite low. No wonder Alcatraz is still in the mid-.90s…

“Fox’s scripted average is really only a 2.19 for the spring? That seems quite low. No wonder Alcatraz is still in the mid-.90s…”

My “fake” scripted average for them (which counts every episode the same regardless of running length) is a 2.198 since Jan 1.

Thanks for mentioning Back To You – I didn’t know it had some unaired episodes. I’m hoping they’re on the dvds so I added them to my Netflix queue. I liked that show for the most part, mostly the scenes with Ty Burrell and the short chubby guy who played the manager.

This sucks if it’s true. How do you know anyways? There are a lot of negatives and few positives.

-I just got into American Dad!
-The Cleveland Show does worse in ratings and sucks terribly.

    -They’ll probably renew it since it’s MacFarlane’s.
-The Flinstones will have a timeslot.
-Bob’s Burgers could return for a third (produced) and fourth season.
-King of the Hill revival could have a higher chance of happening. (This is just me wishing, though Judge did say he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of it returning)
