In an OWN first, Oprah meets and interviews Ram Dass, the renowned spiritual teacher and author of one of the most influential books of the 1970s, “Be Here Now,” on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network’s “Super Soul Sunday,” airing Sunday, April 22 at 11am ET/10 CT.
In the all-new interview, Ram Dass opens up about his life-altering stroke, talks about why he is more at peace than ever before, and how he lives in the moment. The interview offers a rare glimpse into his childhood and the controversy surrounding his research of psychedelic drugs with Timothy Leary at Harvard in the early 1960s. Ram Dass tells the tale of his spiritual studies in India, which led him to relinquish his birth name Richard Alpert, and adopt the name Baba Ram Dass (meaning: Servant of God). He also reflects on his life and the teachings in his best-selling books, “Be Here Now,” “Still Here,” and “Be Love Now.”
Also to air on “Super Soul Sunday” is “Ram Dass: Fierce Grace,” Mickey Lemle’s documentary. The film follows Ram Dass as he deals with the effects of a massive stroke he suffered in February 1997, leaving him physically challenged with impaired memory and speech. “Ram Dass: Fierce Grace” interweaves current conversations, interviews with friends and colleagues, and rare archival footage. Featuring the music of legendary world music artist, Krishna Das, the documentary is more than a bio-pic or a meditation on the process of aging; it is an inspiring portrait of this American cultural icon.
