Bored with the recycling of topics in the CBS renew/cancel posts? Me too. Blame Les Moonves for renewing all those shows early!

To make room for new dramas in next Fall's schedule, CBS will cancel at least one of the CSI offspring (NY or Miami), and maybe both. The conventional wisdom is that if its only one NY goes and Miami stays, but I don't think there's enough behind that conventional wisdom to trust it.

Those imagining that CBS will keep them both with some sort of timeslot share or Saturday timeslot have very vivid imaginations.

What do you think?

More sitcom time could save Rules of Engagement and/or Rob, but without it, they're both likely gone too. Two and a Half Men will be renewed, unless something freakish happens and Ashton Kutcher's salary demands aren't met.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did CBS' shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Get rid of both and Unforgettable stands a better chance of staying! That’s why I voted “Both.”

Game time! With some changes: Votes are now to be done in +3, +2, -2, and -3 until only three shows remain, when all votes will be +3 and -3 only. Also, if anyone new to the site or the game expresses interest in playing, they will first have to be vetted by me, as they must swear on their own graves not to cheat by shape-shifting multiple votes, or any other method (remember to wait 24 hours between votes), and pass a quick trivia test based on the remaining shows in the game. Trivia questions will be asked only on request.

And yes, I am serious about the “swear on their own graves” part. Really.

    THE MENTALIST – 17
    PERSON OF INTEREST – 34
    NCIS – 7
    HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER – 42

Can’t stand Caruso. Heard that before he goes to the airport he goes to Kinkos, has a photo that he’s already autographed copied several times so he doesn’t have to bother with fans. Never liked him when he was on NYPD either.

    @Avery
I like your schedule but with ome exception – no way Martin Lawrence project
to go in friday! This can be best cbs new sitcom! Hope Super Fun Night(girl nerd sitcom)will be hit too!

  • Sam

I really hope to see “CSI Miami” return for another wonderful season. CBS really should have dumped “The Good Wife.”

  • Concerned Citizen

If one gets renewed, it’ll be Miami. I could see them giving it a final shortened season to add episodes to sell into syndication and air it sometime towards the end of the season. Either that, or they’ll get a new drama to fill that role, but NYC 22 hasn’t done well in that role this year, so IDK. I could see them CBS doing the same thing with Rules of Engagement as well.

    Monday
    8:00 – 2 Broke Girls
    8:30 – Mike and Molly
    9:00 – Two and a Half Men

NY will probably be canceled. I love all 3 CSI shows and I don’t want to see any of them canceled. But that’s not going to happen so I’d rather see NY go. CSI: Miami is much more entertaining. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of Gary Sinise (I even met him) but the other characters in that show, aside from Sela Ward, are just boring now.

CSI: Miami will probably be renewed for a final season because…
    1. Syndication
    2. NYC 22 failed in it’s slot
    3. Miami has better ratings than NY and it’s own lead in, The Good Wife.

CBS will probably move The Mentalist to NY’s Friday slot and then push Person of Interest to 10 on Thursday, thus leaving another hour for comedy.

  • One

Just to prove my point that both CSI spinoffs will have to be done regardless of CBS’s comedy block decision, here’s a tweaked version of the hypothetical “CBS Fall 2012″ schedule I cooked up last week:

    Mondays
8pm How I Met Your Mother
    8:30 New comedy
9pm Two and a Half Men
9:30 New Comedy or Mike & Molly
    10pm New Drama

    Tuesdays
    8pm NCIS
    9pm NCIS:LA
    10pm Hawaii Five-0

    Wednesdays
    8pm Survivor
    9pm Criminal Minds
    10pm CSI

    Thursdays
    8pm Big Bang Theory
8:30 New Comedy or Mike & Molly
    9pm Person of Interest
    10pm New Drama

    Fridays
    8pm Undercover Boss
    9pm The Mentalist
    10pm Blue Bloods

    Sundays
    7pm 60 Minutes
    8pm Amazing Race
    9pm New Drama
    10pm Good Wife

    Held for Midseason
    One new drama
    One new comedy

If we are to suggest that CBS’s intent is this, that still requires the cancellation of every non-renewed drama to make room for the three newbies + a fall run for Undercover Boss.

Oh wait, I just realized I forgot to plug in 2 Broke Girls. Put it either Mondays or Thursdays @ 8:30.

  • Rebecca

    THE MENTALIST – 15 (-2)
    PERSON OF INTEREST – 34
    NCIS – 4 (-3)
    HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER – 44 (+2)
    THE BIG BANG THEORY – 97 (+3)

quote from RoE (unknown season/episode, found on IMdb):
Jeff Bingham: Don’t play dumb with me. It’s a game you can’t win.

  • tvfreak

@One: I think you’re the only one who thinks UB will get a fall run. Hopefully not. Cancel both CSI spinoffs, and NYC 22, and AGM, slide UF into Fridays at 9, keep PoI and Mentalist where they are (with no Thursday sitcom expansion), and I will be glad.

  • Fake Me Out

    IMHO

I know, business is business but business should also think about not cheesing off their customers too much / too often. The CSI franchise has given CBS 30 broadcast years of ratings success, syndication deals, DVD et al sales as well as international broadcast sales. I think each show deserves an announced final season and a big send off for all they have done for CBSs bottom line.

Bring back both NY & Miami for 13~16 episodes each and have them both air Fridays @ 9pm or Sundays @ 10pm (timeslot share). I think this will be a ratings winner for CBS … and a good thing for viewers as there will be fewer repeats if the slot has 26~32 episodes scheduled.

C’mon Les, do the right thing, don’t be a douche … renew both for a final send off.

    YMMV

Help save Endgame and watch season 1 on Hulu

  • Shawn

It’ll probably be NY to go, even though I like it. Miami is way more annoying, but the ratings are better.

  • One @ tvfreak

My reasoning is that CBS is tired of their scripted shows going belly up in that timeslot. It’s not entirely unreasonable to work that thread, if you look at the larger pictures of what they did on Fridays this year…

  • BOTR

If Rules of Engagement is renewed, I bet they’ll end up scheduling it on Saturday nights again.

  • Brian J

    @Fake Me Out:

I was thinking the same thing. By putting them both in the same spot, you get (a) fewer weeks of repeats and (b) more episodes of each in syndication.

It’d also be a way for the network to test out a new broadcasting strategy.

  • JK

Keep NY! I’m beginning to think CBS doesn’t even care about the filming quality of MIA, let alone the storylines. Anyone else notice mountains in the background on several episodes? There are no mountains in Miami! At least make it look like you film it there!

    miami is stronger
