After The Secret Circle hit a series low 0.5 adults 18-49 rating last Thursday, the commenter cries began "Worse than Hart Of Dixie!", "As bad as Ringer!", not to mention the retentionistas that have had their knives out for the show all season.

Does its late season ratings plunge pull it off the "likely to be renewed" list? I don't think so, at least not yet, but I'm first to admit there's no data to back me up.

It's very rare that a show that's done reasonably well (ignore the retentionistas) for 90% of the season takes a relative ratings dive at the end like that, so I don't have any data on what that might portend.

That being the case, I'm going with something like "too little, too late", figuring that while renewal decisions have not been announced, the season's ratings history on TSC had minds at the CW already substantially made up to renew the show. But I'm in uncharted waters with that leap.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did the CW's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I think something is wrong with the the CW’s time Ringer slot. Just about all shows have tanked there. I think maybe about 5, Melrose Place, Helcats, that modeling show, The LA Complex, and now Ringer. I don’t know what’s going on with that time slot. But I know Ringer was the first show since 90210 was in that time slot to not hit under a million. With all that promotion, award nominations, and international pickup Ringer failed. If the CW is still thinking about Ringer being renewed it’s because of the international pickup (airing in about 40 countries worldwide WAY more than other freshman shows), awards (has won 4 out of 12 awards), DVR ratings usually bumbs up to a 0.6, and iTunes/Amazon sells that has helped GG get renewed. If they shockingly decided to give it another chances it will be because of those factors and they’ll probably give it a 13 ep order and throw it on wednesdays or fridays. I think it would do WAY better. I was shocked when The LA Complex went up in total viewers as a REPEAT on wednesday after it premeired in that time slot! Does anyone think this slot is cursed?

I think Supernatural must be renewed for two years, and just for sure end it on season 9, with no more renewals after season 9. They must get the chance to set things right on season 8, after all the mess on season 7. Now that they new showrunner, and some new crew members, and wrap things up on season 9 making it an unforgetable final season.

Jim said: “The show hasn’t been officially picked up since I checked the news yesterday. But they just hired new production staff, so…. you don’t sign contracts with people only to fire them a week later. I think the show will come back for season 8. I have a pretty good feeling it will be around for longer than that.”

Its probably not ending on season 8! YES!! :D

  • The Carrie Diaries

RINGER had many BRILLIANT episodes. (Season 1 , Episode 13 WAS THE BEST.) YES , It deserves a Second Chance. There’s SO MUCH questions still unanswered.

Why waste your 2nd strongest show with repeats? It makes no sense at all, seriously if anything they would probably keep Nikita and SPN paired together, though I would rather have them move SPN..

It’s way to strong of a show to be buried on Friday.

  • Peter Mazz

They should cancell Hart of Dixie, Nikita and GG (CW: Please don’t botter to order a ”farewel” season for GG…. i mean, i love it, but the actors don’t want to do it, and it’s getting pretty boring, and it’s hit lower than 1 millions viewers for 3 times (today it’s gonna hit for the fourth time… maybe) And give Ringer a second season

  • Mickey 1.0

    @Eddy
Its probably not ending on season 8! YES!! :D

It makes sense if you look a couple years into the future. They don’t have any shows that can survive on Fridays except TVD and that won’t be ready to be moved to the old folks home for a few more years. All their present shows will be doing worse in a couple years time and be even less able to survive on Friday. Whichever of the future new shows do well won’t be ready to be moved to Friday for many years. So might as well leave Supernatural and its loyal fanbase there for a couple more years.

  • WB

lol does CW Exectives even consider Read this site and these forums!??

  • WB

I missed when it was just ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, The WB, and UPN! :)

  • Sid

Thank you so much @Mickey 1.0 for that link. It gives some sort of hope that NIKITA still may have a chance.

  • Restless

If Supernatural can go to ten seasons, it’ll be in a three-way tie for longest running sci-fi series with SG1 and Smallville. ^^ So instead of rooting for ten seasons, I am now going to root for eleven. :P

Also think Supernatural needs moved off Fridays. Let other shows die there. They can go back to sticking encore showings of ANTM there.
