It's been months since I had Up All Night in the headline of an NBC Renew / Cancel post, and it's already had its season finale, so I'm playing a little catch up. After doing fine early, the show's ratings stumbled late, but with Whitney the only NBC rookie sitcom that's a likely renewal, UAN ratings make it no worse than a "toss up". Only a few more weeks (or less) until we find out for sure.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did NBC's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Rebecca: I’ll look for it, then. :)

    30 ROCK – 43 (+3)
    PARKS & RECREATION – 2 (-3)

    Wow, any more down-votes and P&R is out of the game! If that happens, then remember: 30 Rock would join Community in the Winners’ Circle, where both shows would be reset to 10 points. However, in the Winners’ Circle, votes may only be cast in +1 and -1, because the current format would finish it too quickly.

    Eliminated:
    15. Whiney (4-11, 10:28pm)
    14. Harry’s Law (4-12, 9:44am)
    13. Bent (4-12, 5:16pm)
    12. Smash (4-12, 8:59pm)
    11. The Office (4-13, 4:21am)
    10. Are You There, Chelsea? (4-13, 4:21am)
    9. Law & Order: SVU (4-13, 8:18am)
    8. Best Friends Forever (4-13, 8:22am)
    7. Up All Night (4-13, 8:13pm)
    6. Grimm (4-16, 4:38pm)
    5. Awake (4-19, 9:29pm)
    4. Parenthood (4-24, 4:13pm)

    Victor’s Village:
    1. Community (4-21, 4:09pm)

    “You giving you your ex-girlfriend a polygraph is not one of your better ideas.”
    -Michael Britten, from Awake episode 1.09 “Game Day” (wonderful episode, too!)

  • Rebecca

    Nuts. I thought we’d at least get BFF’s final two episodes. I kind of liked that show except for all the yelling. Oh well. At least we’re getting more of Off Their Rockers. Futoncritic updated their listings, too, on BFF’s page. I checked earlier when Riff mentioned this same news and they had not yet done it.

    @Riff RAfferty,

    I don’t know what you’re talking about. Christian Applegate was good on “Samantha Who?”. Her acting ability isn’t the reason those shows were cancelled.

    @Rebecca,

    Have you seen Crash, Bridesmaids or Mike & Molly?

    Meilssa is good on Mike & Molly but very average in Bridesmaids. Certainly not worthy of an Oscar nomination or an Emmy award. Jennifer Esposito appeared in Crash in a small role. Those are the only things I’ve seen them in, though.

  • Rebecca

    @Justin121
    I’ve seen Crash but don’t remember a lot of it (the movie with Sandra Bullock and Brendan Fraser?). I saw Esposito in some vampire flick a while back, I think with Gerard Butler before he was big. Seen some of Mike & Molly. Loved Melissa in Bridesmaids. Haven’t seen Gilmore Girls but I’ve heard Melissa was in it and was adored in it. I was happy for her when she got the Emmy for M&M but that was the year I would have liked Martha Plimpton to get it for RH. Maybe Applegate will have a hit show some day, whether UAN returns and improves or she gets something else.

  • tvfreak

    @Rebecca: So you recommend Bridesmaids? My mom is dying to see that one.

  • Rebecca

    @tvfreak
    For your mom? As long as she doesn’t hate Kristen Wiig like you do, lol, then yes. There are some “icky” parts (just uncomfortable, not gross) between Wiig and John Hamm, but otherwise I thought it was maybe the funniest movie I saw last year (much better than Hangover II) and I own the dvd. My parents didn’t like it as much as I did, but they’re not into a lot of movies and TV shows that I like (some but not all). And actually, Wiig is pretty tolerable in this so maybe you’d like it, too (if you haven’t seen it yet). McCarthy is worth seeing in this, and her best scenes (on the airplane) are with her real life husband, who coincidentally was in an episode of UAN this season. There is stuff later in the movie with her and some Golden Retriever pups that I loved. I’m watching Pirate Radio right now (movie) that has Chris O’Dowd in it, who was the nice Irish guy/cop in Bridesmaids and then was later in Friends With Kids with Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig and John Hamm (again) – haven’t seen that one yet.

    @Justin121
    By the way, I found the 2BG quote that involved Revenge, so later when I vote in the game on the CBS thread I’ll post it there. It was in Wikiquotes.

  • Carm

    Cancel ” Are you there Chelsea and Keep “HARRY’S LAW”!!!!

  • tvfreak

    @Rebecca: Tolerable Wiig, huh? Yeah, as long as she doesn’t play an over-the-top weird character like on SNL. And if Melissa McCarthy is involved – BONUS!

    And I hope you enjoy Pirate Radio. It’s a very good movie. My only issue is that some of the rock-and-roll they play is music that came out after the movie takes place – most noticeably “Won’t Get Fooled Again.”

  • Riff Rafferty

    I don’t know what you’re talking about. Christian Applegate was good on “Samantha Who?”. Her acting ability isn’t the reason those shows were cancelled.

    Of course it wasn’t. Her lack of being funny on the unfunny “Samantha Who?” was the reason it was cancelled. If you thought she or that show was funny, then I don’t know what you’re on but I’m guessing either shrooms or acid.

  • Nick

    30 ROCK – 43 (+3)
    PARKS & RECREATION – 2 (-3)

  • Jeff

    I imagine Go On will bow at 8 pm Thirsdays so NBC can promote Matthew Perry returning to his old timeslot.

  • Riff Rafferty

    I thought we’d at least get BFF’s final two episodes. Futoncritic updated their listings, too, on BFF’s page. I checked earlier when Riff mentioned this same news and they had not yet done it.

    Apparently I am the one with the “breaking” news. Even though it happened a good 24 hours before I was even on here to post it.

    Hopefully, the last 2 will be on at some point after sweeps.

    Yep, enjoying that movie so far – had to stop and then was out all day so I’ll finish it later. And no, Wiig doesn’t do any weird characters IMO in the Bridesmaids movie…she’s basically normal. McCarthy is the scene stealer, she’s awesome.

    @Riff
    Yeah, I hope we get to see the last two BFF episodes eventually. Adding that to my list of canceled shows that might or will burn off in the summer.

    I’ll miss Awake. Hopefully NBC realizes that their lead in to Thursday at 10 isn’t stellar. Thursday at 10 has been a death sentence since ER’s end and Leno’s awful run. Awake will become the third casualty following Love Bites and Prime Suspects. Hard to believe that Leno’s terrible primetime show continues to drag down the time slot.

    I actually think switching Grimm and Awake would benefit both shows. Grimm audience seems closer to the Parks & Rec crowd than Awake, and Awake would benefit from the slightly older Friday night audience (although that wouldn’t do a lot for renewal).

    Oh well, it was good while it lasted. I’m slowly giving up on TV; the shows I like don’t get renewed in favor of karaoke and cliche dramas and sitcoms with poor acting.
