It's been months since I had Up All Night in the headline of an NBC Renew / Cancel post, and it's already had its season finale, so I'm playing a little catch up. After doing fine early, the show's ratings stumbled late, but with Whitney the only NBC rookie sitcom that's a likely renewal, UAN ratings make it no worse than a "toss up". Only a few more weeks (or less) until we find out for sure.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did NBC's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Mike: You don’t count The Firm as a casualty?

I, too, will sorely miss Awake. I can only hope one of NBC-Universal’s cable nets picks it up. Maybe Syfy or Cloo, or even USA.

  • Bobby

I like Up All Night. I hope it does not get cancelled.

@Nick: I think you meant to raise Community up to 13, not 11. Assuming that, here’s my vote:

    COMMUNITY – 12 (-1)

    15. Whiney (4-11, 10:28pm)

    3. Parks & Recreation (4-28, 3:22pm)

From Community episode 3.17 “Basic Lupine Urology” –
Jeff: If it’s any consolation, she got me here on a very misleading text message.
Annie: Technically, you are about to be screwed in the biology room.

Here’s the longest Dwight quote I’ve got from The Office [5.09]:
Dwight: What is my perfect crime? I break into Tiffany’s at midnight. Do I go for the vault? No, I go for the chandelier, it’s priceless. As I’m taking it down, a woman catches me. She tells me to stop. It’s her father’s business; she’s Tiffany. I say no. We make love all night. In the morning the cops come, and I escape in one of their uniforms. I tell her to meet me in Mexico, but I go to Canada – I don’t trust her. Besides, I like the cold. Thirty years later, I get a postcard: I have a son, and he’s the chief of police. This is where the story gets interesting. I tell Tiffany to meet me in Paris, by the Trocadéro. She’s been waiting for me all these years, she’s never taken another lover. I don’t care. I don’t show up. I go to Berlin. That’s where I stashed the chandelier.

It appears Whitney Cummings is going to have a talk show over on the E! channel in the fall, so it’s very possible her Whitney show won’t be returning. There was an article on Zap2it earlier today about it; I’m sorry I don’t have the link. She made some comment about being able to say more on that channel (complaining about NBC then, in a way). So maybe that’s the better format for her anyway, more in tune with her stand-up comedy skills. I liked the Whitney show a little bit, but I won’t be surprised if it doesn’t return. The season finale felt like a series finale. Maybe there is hope for UAN or else at least for some of the new comedies coming to the network. I’ll try Go On, Downwardly Mobile, Animal Kingdom, 1600 Penn, and maybe the new Sarah Silverman show.

    30 ROCK – 6 (-1) I have to vote this down :-(

@Rebecca: I’m glad I’m not the only one rooting for 1600 Penn. It would be fun to see Bill Pullman as the President again. And if Whiney leaves NBC to make room for it, so much the better, I say.

    COMMUNITY – 13 (-1)
    30 ROCK – 7 (+1) I have to vote this up :)

From Seinfeld episode 8.13 “The Comeback” –
George: Listen to the comeback: “Oh yeah? Well the jerk store called. They’re running outta you.” [Jerry, Elaine, and Kramer stare blankly at him] Wha…You gotta be kidding me?!
Elaine: How ’bout this one? How ’bout, “Your cranium called. It’s got some space to rent.”?
    George: What does that mean?
Jerry: Hey, here you go: “Hey, Reilly. The zoo called. You’re due back by six.”
George: No. No, no, no. You’re not helping me.

    @tvfreak
Right? He was the Prez in the Independence Day movie! I normally don’t watch White House tv stuff but I’ll check that out since it’s a comedy. :-) And, uh, yeah, I agree about Whitney. Her show wasn’t better than Outsourced IMO (a comedy I wish had continued, but I was fine with the finale anyway). Gee, I can vote in one more minute…time to start typing:

    COMMUNITY – 12 (-1)
    30 ROCK – 8 (+1)

    quote from 30R [6.18]:
Jack: Besides, what did Theodore “Bazooka” Joe do when his eccentric millionaire father left him nothin but a tiny pink rock quarry? He baked those rocks and sold them to children. As gum.

I really hope Awake gets another season, even though the ratings don’t back it. However I think the sad truth is, if this show were on another network it would probably do better as a whole. Additionally, this may be one of those shows where people discover it over the summer, either on Hulu, Netfix or after the Emmy awards have been given out.

  • yragcom1

I don’t understand how people can NOT like UAN. It’s a good show, and belongs in a NBC comedy block somewhere on the schedule. It’s smart and funny, and the cast is great. If UAN gets canned and Parenthood stays, I know that NBC has no hope.

  • Riff Rafferty

Mike: You don’t count The Firm as a casualty?

There is a possibility, albeit small, of Entertainment One and Sony funding another season. (There’s of course no possibility of NBC broadcasting it, but I digress.)

Considering that the annoying star was bitching about the show and its writers in an interview, I can’t imagine either company would want to waste another cent on this thing, though.

  • Riff Rafferty

NBC is going to have 8 million unhappy viewers if they cancel Harry’s Law. do you think another network like AMC, FX, etc. would pick the show up if NBC (aka Kabletown) cancels it?

Hypothetically-speaking, if NBC did that, well, one, I’d destroy them both at my job and in every other way I can. And two, Warner Bros. would be shopping it to TNT. They’re in business with Kelley already (his pilot there is expected to go) and it would be a much better get than the thing they did get from NBC.

I don’t think it’s gonna come to that, though. NBC launched 17 new series this season and they pretty much all bombed. I read the sides from 7 of their drama pilots. Sh!+. Their development execs are clueless and they have next to no clue what the public wants to see. Hence, the 17 new bombs. Also, NBC’s brand is so toxic right now that America doesn’t even want to so much as SAMPLE anything they trot out. All I had to do was see what “Bent” and “Rock Center” and “Escape Routes” did in time slots that “Harry’s Law” vacated to know what an incredible asset and what an important utility player it is for them. Picking up 13 episodes for midseason gives them one less hour to worry about after football ends while they focus on their serious problems (we’ll just call them Wednesday and Thursday). They do have to work on the demo too. The 25-54 numbers are pretty bad and the 18-49 numbers are really bad. I gave them a suggestion — to add a secretarial character who has a big fanbase/Twitter following/whatever among the braindead 18-24 crowd. Something that will get people in the door without hurting the integrity of what’s already there. Hopefully, they will take it up.

USA TODAY just published the results of the annual SAVE OUR SHOWS poll. NBC was champion by a wide margin. Parks and Recreation garnered the most votes for renewal followed by Community. Harry’s Law also did well. Check out the LIFE section for complete results.

  • Giggles@UAN

UAN should and will be renewed. I laugh outloud at that show CONStANTLY! Mia Rudolph is amazing- along with the rest of the cast. Their humor is whitty and smart- not obvious and stupid. The comedic timing is impeccable and the chemistry between actors is awesome. Whitney is hard and awkward to watch but will be renewed. Chelsea is boring, lacks comedic timing and is flat painful to watch. SVU is still SVU. Harry’s Law sucks. NBC needs to keep the comedies and write new ones if they have a shot in hell against ABC.
