vMBMom, I agree with you on the boycott. I have said before I don’t know if it had any bearing on the Revolution being canceled but I know I feel better just knowing I didn’t help its ratings any. I am glad GH is “inching” up. I watched today when Luke answered the door to John McBain. LOL they really seemed to have a good time with their lines. It’s the little things that I enjoy. They are having fun with the whole vampire thing. Also enjoyed when Tracy served Anthony breakfast and Luke barged in and slapped his plate away. I hope ABC keeps showing promos on other shows. I really believe that is the only way to get viewers back. I guess I won’t know if they do because I still can’t bring myself to watch anything else on ABC. My husband taped Don’t trust the B in apt 23 and started to watch it tonight. After 10 minutes he stopped watching and said it was just a really dumb show. So I guess I am still not missing much.

I’m enjoying Days so very much and continue to wish it much success! Love the actors, many of the storylines and the feel of this soap overall. It is by far the best soap on television!

The “exodus” of viewers that people on here keep talking about has not happened as one might think. The Nielsen ratings listed above only are representative of the live afternoon viewing of these shows. I said it last week but apparently no one read it. These ratings are impressive no matter what they are because they are only representing a small percentage of the actual viewers and that this many people are still watching these shows in the afternoon is amazing. Unfortunately, the actual viewership for these remaining four programs as well as the recently cancelled soaps are much much higher than what is reported on here. It’s easy for one to speculate that the viewers turned their backs on these shows for this reason or that, or because a certain actor or character left, but in fact these people are so out of touch with reality and it’s not their fault. I mean think about it people, seriously, if an actor left did you keep watching your soaps? YES, it might have made you mad but you still watched and enjoyed them as much as ever. I used to think these ratings were important and meant something but now I have been enlightened to an alternative ratings collections agency known as Rentrak. Rentrak contracts with the cable providers to obtain actual viewership of television programs, where Nielsen only counts actual original broadcast viewers and only DVR if it is watched before 3am and no commercial is fast forwarded when the show is viewed on DVR. Sony solicited Rentrak to provide them with viewer counts for Days of our Lives and The Young and the Restless, which are two shows that they produce, package, and distribute. The results indicated that only one in four actual viewers of these shows were even being counted by Nielsen in the ratings data. This information did not include soapnet or online viewing which would no doubt would increase this ratio to 1 in 5.

Also, there will be “naysayers” who will try their best to argue that I am wrong but I am on this topic bigger than ever and I will gladly provide you with additional proof that what I say is true-in-fact. The soap genre has been a victim of alternate viewing options being available to it’s viewers. The daytime airing of each soap has made it even more vulnerable than other programs to time shifted viewing over the past decade. As a result, the actual viewership is not being counted by Nielsen because they are still using a system to collect viewership that was designed in the early 1950’s when there was only three channels.

You keep saying the same thing over and over and over, but yet you still have failed to address the questions asked of you.

First, give us some other confirmation besides just your word that what you say about only counting daytime viewers if they don’t fast forward any part of the show. We only have your word as there as not been any other source given to contradict that.

Second, your clues last week made it clear that you work at Days of Our Lives. If Sony has done all this research and they know the ratings are wrong then why in the world spend all this money they are spending every 6 months on these ad campaigns to save Days or to reboot Days or to change Days.

Why in the world do all that if the ratings are wrong and the viewers are still there. If the viewers are still there like they were 5 years ago as you say then why tick fans off by firing favorites, etc.

According to you these ratings are bogus and the soaps still have the same amount of viewers they did 5 years ago or even longer. But none of it adds up with the actions taken even by Sony who you say knows that the viewers are still there.

It just comes off as wishful thinking on your part to me, because the actions don’t add up to your version of the facts.

  • Richard

And one more question if the viewers are still there and even Sony knows this why are the budgest being constantly cut. I mean from what I read Days probably has the lowest budget of all the current soaps. If Sony knows viewers are still there then why not put the same amount of money there to produce a better quality show.

I agree Kayla Rat. what’s also cool is that it’s 3rd place which is awesome! it didn’t have to have sex scens or anything risque to get attention. I guess with Lexie dying soon (actress wants to quit acting)people are wondering that plus the Stefano being extremely evil on everyone, Nicole & Ej possibly leaving Salem or not, Gaby making up a stalker lie to try to break up Chad & Mel. Will hating on Sami even more ad suddenly single Lucas making out with Sami on Friday’s cliffhanger. It’s amazing. Oh an Stefano planning on confessing to EJ he’s not his father. does that go for Lexie too or not hmm thanks to him putting her underground literally long time ago the fumes cause her brain tumor. RIP Lexie, not fair for doctor like her to save many lives Throughout days to have no one save her life from a brain tumor. so sad. btw i think Billie could end up in the hospital, she’s trying to crack down on the Dimeras ways but Stefano & Ej will beat her to the chase and make Lisa Rinna’s lips explode!

GH is a mess! Cartini have done nothing to boost ratings. GH has less viewers than GL and ATWT had when they were cancelled. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Hi Chrisann, I was surprised when I realized the only shows I actually watched on ABC were the daytime soaps, Desperate Housewives, and the also cancelled Extreme Home Makeover. So now I’m down to GH & that’s OK. I would have watched Revenge and some of the sitcoms, like Suburgatory, but when they announced AMC &OLTL were cancelled, I had no problem finding other viewing options than ABC. I’m glad to hear they are finally showing GH promos. Maybe if they aired half the promos they showed for The Revolution the ratings would continue to inch up. I am really enjoying GH! I think they are trying to give some of the cast airtime besides the unholy three. Loving Luke, Anna, Tracy, Heather McBain, and most of the cast. Balance is key.

These ratings are not great. It was pretty much a standard week.

And I agree with other posters, they lost a ton of viewers last summer. They let three huge GH characters go, Brenda, Jax and Nik. They decimated S&B and Carjax. So among other things, I think this is to blame, and yet they show no inclination to remedy any of this. Instead they took an unknown actress playing Kate, a minor GH role, and elevated her to leading lady and ratings dropped further. GH basically just rebounded from the previous week.

To actually prove they can be viable they have to show enormous growth. If they think that Sonny/Kate, which is not a hugely popular pairing, is giong to do it, or John, Tea and Todd, then I think we’re sunk. They’re continuing the tradition of destroying GH history.

I actually had some hope with RC and FV coming but now I don’t.

  • Melanie

Ah, same ole stuff, different week. GH was pretty much a disaster overall last year, so that is why many viewers left and didn’t bother to return and if some of them did, they are not happy with what RC and FV have done so far. Just recycling storylines that they did on OLTL with this horrendous DID crap, which I find totally ridiculous and unecessary and rape issues (Johnny sleeping with Connie even though he knows she is mentally ill, another recycled s/l from OLTL with Ford/Teen Jess) STILL continuing with many of the same ole boring and depressing storylines that were not popular at all under Wolf’s regime. Only the folks who have just recently started watching again after not watching for a while or some of the OLTL viewers who never watched GH only seem to be the ones enjoying it the most. Many of us who have been watching more steadily over the past few years, have just had enough. I have read many comments on some other boards and it appears that most are not all that happy and feel that RC and FV could care less really about GH history. I feel some are just trying to hang on in hopes of it improving dramatically. I read spoilers for May sweeps and am still not impressed, same ole same ole, yawn. I haven’t even bothered watching in the past couple of weeks either. From recaps I have read, I don’t feel I have been missing much. If this keeps up then I don’t see how they can justify staying on air until next April. Anyways, on to Y&R and B&B. After giving these shows a much needed break, I am actually enjoying watching them again. I think it is impressive how B&B always holds its own ratings wise without all of the hype and hoopla.

Dave A., I am one of the GH viewers who quit watching last summer after Brenda&Jax left .. I wanted to quit after Jake was killed off, that really angered me, the clumsy and heartless way it was done (not a Liason fan, either!) but I felt I had to stay to support Jax .. once he was gone, I had nothing tying me to GH any longer. I started watching AMC instead. When it was over, I switched over to DAYS for the “reboot”. That was GREAT for awhile, but it lost steam. So I switched over to OLTL. WOW, that was GREAT! Night and day from the other soaps, I loved every minute until it ended. I came back to GH because of FC&RV. They are really making GH entertaining again. Bringing back the vets we love (Anna! Felicia! I wish Robert had stayed longer) plus adding in some OLTL characters I grew to love just in the short time I watched. GH deserves a second chance because they finally got rid of Guza and brought in some writers who know how to make a soap fun to watch. I’m enjoying it again.

  • Melanie

Oh yes, I forgot to add that a poster on another board mentioned how ironic they find that OLTL was always considered the “ugly stepchild” of AMC and GH, but now people act like the crossovers are going to “save” GH. I too find that odd since so far, it hasn’t done much at all for the ratings. May sweeps leaves much to be seen if there are any improvements overall.

  • Richard

I am not even boycotting and you watch more on ABC than I do. LOL

For the first time in years I don’t watch anything on ABC, CBS or Fox. Just nothing appeals to me.

The Voice on NBC is the only thing I watch on NBC. I was watching SVU but in recent weeks lost interest in it.

  • MBmomof3

Richard that’s really funny. I really don’t watch much network TV either. I watch my soaps on SoapNet or online. I watch the Simpsons on Fox, but that’s about it. My husband and kids DVR their shows. Aside from my soaps and The Simpsons, for sone reason, I’m loving Doomsday Preppers. I’ll watch On Demand if I really want to see something, like Nurse Jackie.

  • Jack

I don’t see anyway that GH will ever get any meaningful ratings gains during its token 1-year renewal. Apparently, ABC sacrified a soap that was #3 in the ratings with about a half million more viewers than rather abandon GH. I tried watching GH but I just can’t get tuned in.

Now, over to Y&R. Are they serious? Are they for real? I could not believe that Jack’s son – Kyle, has returned adding about 10 years to his age. Do they have to bend the rules of time just to get in a new storyline? It’s no wonder intelligent people simply are leaving soaps. Please CBS, get new writers for your #1 soap. I’m getting more RESTLESS as the weeks go by.

  • BOTR

@MBmomof3: “the[y] also cancelled Extreme Home Makeover.”

    What show was that?

  • MBmomof3

BOTR, I think it was actually titled “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”. The one with Ty Pennington and the crew that would makeover homes into dream homes for needy families. Poor Ty. Why oh why did he ever think The Revolution could replace an iconic show like OLTL. I used to watch him when he was on “Trading Spaces”. I’m sure he’ll land a gig.

  • MBmomof3

@Jack, I read Kyle from Y&R was suffering from SORAS, but I cracked up when he walked in and said, “Hi Dad.” LOL. But I must admit, I couldn’t stand the kid that played Kyle before.
