After two years of what seemed like face saving renewals of marginally rated dramas (V, Body Of Proof), ABC finds itself in a completely different position this season with several rookie dramas with reasonably good ratings.

From Revenge which I have predicted as "certain to be renewed" for quite some time, now to Scandal, which after a string of 2.0 adults 18-49 ratings I am moving up to "likely to be renewed", to GCB not far behind, but still a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation.

This is the last "regular" ABC Renew/Cancel Index post of the 2011-12 season. Next week Robert and I combine for our annual "Oddsmakers" final predictions for the season.

Why is Cougar Town just a "toss up" with its dreadful ratings instead of "likely to be canceled" or worse? Because of past (negative) experience, I'm keeping shows in their third seasons (even shortened ones) no lower than a "toss up" because of potential syndication related benefits.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did ABC's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Oh, I hope it stays on network TV. I can’t watch it, at least not live or in the same season, if it airs on cable (network and PBS only here). Hopefully it will be handled better than Cougar Town was. I’m really going to miss CT…prepared for its end now. Archer airs on F/X, and I’m always a season behind watching it on Netflix.

    @tvfreak, alright, thank you.

    CASTLE – 49 (-3)
    THE MIDDLE – 47 (+2)
    ONCE UPON A TIME – 28 (-2)
    MODERN FAMILY – 43 (+3)

A good way to simplify voting is to just jot down somewhere near the computer (on a Post-It note or whatever) what time you voted, and each day you just go through the NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox threads and cast your votes. If you’re late, just jot down the new vote time. Thread/forum times are Pacific time, and I’m Mtn time so I jot down my local time to remember better.

Something smells fishy to me. Smells like a certain show forerunner made a deal with ABC to cut Private Practice to only 13 episodes in order to get “special project” Scandal renewed. Me thinks it’s going to bite her back in the face next season when Scandal is bringing in 1’s and ABC can’t justify keeping her “Special project” around. Then she will have lost two shows. My sympathy to the cast and crew of Private Practice. Its a great show that has been under appreciated ABC. Nary a promo is ever seen for this show.

Bill Lawrence is optimistic that CT will return next season..he’s kinda
arrogant about it too on twitter

  • Fred

I agree that Haoot Endings would be better off on NBC. Same with Cougar Town.
BTW, USA TODAY just published the results for SAVE OUR SHOWS annual poll. NBC was the champ by a wide margin. Parks and Recreation garnered the most votes followed by Community. Harry’s Law did well too. Check it out in the LIFE section for all the results.

Need an edit button! HAPPY ENDINGS.

@Adam: I actually counted two promos for PP during Castle last night.

  • chrisss

    @ Adam

Even though it’s been reported that a 13 episode pick up is only due to the fact that that’s how long Kate Walsh has on her contract?!

  • Richard Steven Hack

As long as Revenge and Castle get renewed, I’m good.

OUAT, meh, they can do what they want as far as I’m concerned, but there’s no doubt it will be back. It is a much better show than I expected, though, mostly due to Robert Carlyle and Lana Parilla (still don’t like Ginnifer Goodwin).

Missing is so much better than that Soap opera Scandal. Why in the world would ABC schedule a show like Missing for 8pm? It’s the wrong audience for this kind of a drama. Sell Missing to CBS and let them air it at 9 or 10 to watch the ratings climb. It is a brilliant show in the wrong time slot directed at the wrong audience and do us a favor and cancel the soap Scandal. Daytime is canceling the soaps. The soap era is over. Is it any wonder Scandal started out and continues to be one of the lowest rated programs.

Oh god, please do not ever go into the tv business

  • Fred

I disgree with your statement about ABC’s handling of Private Practice. ABC has provided PP with a very desirable timeslot after Grey’s since the debut. There were also many eps featuring GA cast members throughout the years. Still PP never became a hit. But it has done pretty well despite not being critically acclaimed or highly promoted like GA. BTW I watch lots of ABC live and see enough promos of PP. Looks like PP fans will enjoy 13 eps next season. My wife will be very happy.

Is it any wonder Scandal started out and continues to be one of the lowest rated programs.

Believe it or not, simply writing something down or saying it out loud doesn’t automatically make it true.

My sympathy to the cast and crew of Private Practice. Its a great show that has been under appreciated ABC

Please. It got the cushy Grey’s Anatomy lead-in for, what, three consecutive years? Practically every other drama on ABC would have killed for that timeslot.

I can only be hopeful that the shortened season for PP was an idea they picked up on the sight of the series low it had its first week on Tuesdays, and now ABC will be considering a full-season order.

But neither this season’s average nor recent ratings are any reason to make the cut. It would seem like they want to lose money!

  • Doris

I have to agree about Missing. It would do a lot better at 10 pm. Why is it on at eight? Does that make sense to anybody? I expect Scandal to burn out fast.

  • Rebecca

    @Bunny (and @Fred)
So far I’m fine with Bill Lawrence from the little I know about him (I’m not on Twitter or FB)…but I’ll say this: All the episodes of Cougar Town thus far (except for the pilot) have been titled with names of Tom Petty songs. And each title fits the episode just about perfectly. Bill (or his writers, whomever are responsible) = comedy-go-with-song-title genius! lol

What I hate lately is whenever I see promos on ABC for LMS, they’ll show bits of the episode and then just a voice-over at the end that says, “Followed by Cougar Town” and no scenes from CT. Bill L seems to have to promote the show on his own (with the cast, whenever they do), so good luck to him.

  • Fred

Nearly every episode of CT was funny this season. Even when I’m not laughing, I’m enjoying the plot and/or the characters. Can’t say that about many sitcoms. Last week’s ep was hilarious. Can’t wait for tonight.

ABC is looking a 13 final episode deal for Private Practice.

my thoughts on a 2012-2013 schedule

    8pm OUAT
    9pm Gotham/Gilded Lily’s
    10pm Castle

8-10pm DWTS/Bachelor/DWTS (I still think DWTS should only be one cycle a year but I understand that it is needed ratings wise)
    10pm Last Resort

    8pm DWTS results
    8:30pm Happy Endings
    9pm Prairie Dogs
    9:30pm Apt 23
    10pm Devious Maids

    8pm The Middle
    8:30pm Suburgatory
    9pm Modern Family
    9:30pm American Judy/Family Trap
    10pm Revenge

    8pm Shark Tank
    9pm Grey’s Anatomy
    10pm Private Practice(fall)/Scandal(spring)

    8pm last man standing
    8:30pm Malibu Country
    9pm What would you do?
    10pm 20/20

  • Bunny

Hmmm…If Happy Endings is after DWTS then the show might have to hype up the love triangle that was hinted in the finale
