After two years of what seemed like face saving renewals of marginally rated dramas (V, Body Of Proof), ABC finds itself in a completely different position this season with several rookie dramas with reasonably good ratings.
From Revenge which I have predicted as "certain to be renewed" for quite some time, now to Scandal, which after a string of 2.0 adults 18-49 ratings I am moving up to "likely to be renewed", to GCB not far behind, but still a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation.
This is the last "regular" ABC Renew/Cancel Index post of the 2011-12 season. Next week Robert and I combine for our annual "Oddsmakers" final predictions for the season.
Why is Cougar Town just a "toss up" with its dreadful ratings instead of "likely to be canceled" or worse? Because of past (negative) experience, I'm keeping shows in their third seasons (even shortened ones) no lower than a "toss up" because of potential syndication related benefits.
The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did ABC's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.
Notes:
-
- certain to be cancelled by May, 2012 -
- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012 -
- toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012 -
- more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012 -
- certain to be renewed by May, 2012
The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).
(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

PP could air its 13 episodes in the DWTS results timeslot when it is on break.
However, it would need to be cut to 10-11 episodes. Or just have 2-3 of them air in a different timeslot. The last ones.
I love scandal, although the dialogue can be a bit embarassing sometimes. Also, it seems that Private Practive has good ratings, so I am not sure why they are canceling it!! It seems like ABC and Shonda Rhimes want to really push “Scandal” at the detriment of its other show.
I hate people making fantasy schedules. Can you guys ban people who do it?
Have people really given up on Cougar Town being renewed?
I remember all the rumours and whispers about Fringe being renewed, and now Private Practice…
I havent heard any rumblings about Cougar Town…which is disconcerting.
@John A – Agreed. I don’t mind thoughtful fantasy schedules at all, and I do them every year on my blog. But none of the fantasy schedules in these comment sections have any thought or research or planning or COMMON FRIGGIN’ SENSE behind them.
I just hope GCB gets renewed, but if it dosent I’ll buy the DVD in June.
@ John A and r0ckmypants –
I’ll stop posting my fantasy schedules when other people stop doing the stupid fantasy elimination games.

i wouldn’t take the “13 episode” comment about PP seriously yet. i have a hard time believing it’ll get an OTH-like perfect “this is the final season!” type exit. the cast and crew still wanna make it and if the ratings are still decent, it’ll get extra episodes and be in contention for a season 7. if not, they’ll announce mid-way that it’s indeed the end.
Castle is such a high quality show, and has a strong, loyal fanbase, and audience and almost always has more total viewers than piece -o- sh*t H50!!
DWTS is sadly, slowly, steadily dying. It is still the most watched reality show on TV, so that is a good plus to ABC.
I think Devious Maids is such a quality SUNDAY show, NOT good for Wednesday. I think the SUNDAY schedule should be: ( AND THE REST OF THE WEEK)
SUNDAY
8PM – Americana
9PM – Devious Maids
10PM – Revenge (NEW NIGHT)

@Grey,
Except from the CT showrunners. An ominous sign indeed.
Well, I will be watching every CT ep that airs. Sadly CT isn’t on NBC. If it were CT would have a better chance of being renewed.
Actually im sorry for the typo… I actually meant for Once Upon A Time to be at Wednesday at 10 and Gotham Tuesday at 9 and Scandal at Thursday at 10 and 666 Park Ave at Friday at 10… somehow
I love reading these fantasy schedules. Some of them are just straight up insane. OUAT on Fridays? Grey’s Anatomy on Friday? 20/20 on Wednesdays? all of ABC’s wednesday block moved to Sunday? almost the entire schedule having a different show come midseason? lol. no offense. I like reading them because I like seeing what other people have in mind, but sometimes they can just be a bit crazy, but that’s okay because it gives me a good laugh.
@Fred and @Grey
According to Bill Lawrence there is lots behind-the-scene stuff that not of people know about…and he recently tweeted that all of the media sites who predicted a downfall for CT will be on his “suck it” list when the show comes back next season.
Thanks Bunny!
@billymartins Ditto to what Alex said. You would literally ruin ABC within 1 year with such a dramatic scheduling shift, lol.

I’m going to have to go with both of the Tonys on the fantasy schedule issue. They’re at least good for some laughs at all the craziness, and they’re infinitely more interesting than the annoying elimination game.
Scandal will be renewed but it will be moved

I don’t mind fantasy schedules if they make some sense. I do it myself. billy martins and Matto’s schedules are so bad.
