Nobody's happier than I am that the recycling of CBS topics and headlines in this weekly post is over after this week.
While I can imagine a scenario where CBS doesn't expand its sitcom time and Rules of Engagement gets renewed, I don't think that's a likely scenario. If CBS doesn't expand its sitcom time, I think it's likely that both Rules and Rob are canceled.
However if CBS does expand its sitcom time by an hour (which seems likely but not certain) then these are the outcomes I see in order of their decreasing likelihood.
- Rules is renewed. Rob is canceled.
- Both are renewed.
- Both are canceled.
- Rob is renewed. Rules is canceled. I view this as highly unlikely.
To make room for new dramas in next Fall's schedule, CBS will cancel at least one of the CSI offspring (NY or Miami), and maybe both. The conventional wisdom is that if its only one NY goes and Miami stays, but I don't think there's enough behind that conventional wisdom to trust it.
This is the last "regular" CBS Renew/Cancel Index post of the 2011-12 season. Next week Robert and I combine for our annual "Oddsmakers" final predictions for the season.
The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did CBS' shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.
Notes:
-
- certain to be cancelled by May, 2012 -
- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012 -
- toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012 -
- more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012 -
- certain to be renewed by May, 2012
The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).
(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Thank you, sir.
Still a toss up between CSI: Miami & CSI: NY. On the road to cancellation are Rob, Rules of Engagement, A Gifted Man, Unforgettable & NYC 22.
Rob- plays too much on stereotypes.
Rules- David Spade isn’t believable as a ladies man. Dump Spade, keep Rules.

From 2.5 Men episode 9.22 “Why We Gave Up Women” -
Kathy Bates as Charlie’s Ghost: I had to come back from hell to do it, but I finally got you out of my freaking house.
Alan: So you were just screwing with me?
Ms. Bates: Yep.
Alan: Why?
Ms. Bates: I am in hell, Alan, that is kind of what we do.
@CrimTV
As much as I love 2 Broke Girls, I doubt CBS will choose to put it at 8pm, it’s content isn’t appropriate for 8pm
I don’t think CBS shares those views as they’ve scheduled it at 8pm four times already.
Obviously if you have a family show or something that is targeting younger viewers, you want it on at 8pm in order to maximize your audience; but that doesn’t exclude shows that aren’t appropriate for kids/teens from airing during the first hour of primetime.
Nick and tvfreak just did the exact same votes around the same time, so fixing the totals and adding my own new votes:
PERSON OF INTEREST – 72 (-3)
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER – 21 (+3)
…which basically now puts us back where we were, lol, since I keep voting HIMYM up.
Quote from HIMYM [7.22]:
Lily (about Marshall training to be a new dad): I woke up the other day, he had swaddled me. Sure, it was the best night’s sleep I’ve had in months, but still…
I think Super Fun Night would go great with Big Bang, both nerdy shows trying to do something outrageous every episode… I also hope Elementary will be picked up… xD
“Irrelevant.
Networks do not “surprise” announce whether a finale is season or series finale in promos.”
Actually they do. You might wanna look into that. Because they do it all the time. I have already seen it on may stations already

I doubt you can provide one example of a network running a series finale promo prior to releasing a press release about it, much less enough to support your claim that it happens all the time.

CSI Trio sweeps most watched drama category
@Liz: My bad. NCIS Los Angeles should air on Thursdays at 9pm next season just to see how it does without its predecessor’s lead-in.
Rules had its episode order cut this year. Surely that means it was cancelled?
@BL
Where is ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ in your Schedule ?
I think CSI New York will be cancelled for sure. CSI:Miami will maybe get one more Season. But CBS could cancel both.
I?m new to this site. SO what is this Game about and what means elimated shows ?
Anne
The Good Wife is a great show and deserves it’s renewal. Some of you people don’t know a classy show if you saw one!!!!!!!!!!!
@Anne Kathrin Sommer
The rules/instructions for the Elimination Game (which is just for fun) is in a comment by tvfreak on page 2 of this thread, second comment from the top. The instructions are different for some of the network threads (Fox, NBC, and ABC have this game, too, besides CBS) depending on how many show titles are left in the game.
