Nobody's happier than I am that the recycling of CBS topics and headlines in this weekly post is over after this week.

While I can imagine a scenario where CBS doesn't expand its sitcom time and Rules of Engagement gets renewed, I don't think that's a likely scenario. If CBS doesn't expand its sitcom time, I think it's likely that both Rules and Rob are canceled.

However if CBS does expand its sitcom time by an hour (which seems likely but not certain) then these are the outcomes I see in order of their decreasing likelihood.

  • Rules is renewed. Rob is canceled.
  • Both are renewed.
  • Both are canceled.
  • Rob is renewed. Rules is canceled. I view this as highly unlikely.

To make room for new dramas in next Fall's schedule, CBS will cancel at least one of the CSI offspring (NY or Miami), and maybe both. The conventional wisdom is that if its only one NY goes and Miami stays, but I don't think there's enough behind that conventional wisdom to trust it.

This is the last "regular" CBS Renew/Cancel Index post of the 2011-12 season. Next week Robert and I combine for our annual "Oddsmakers" final predictions for the season.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did CBS' shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

“All I have to say is they need to keep CSI NY!”

Oh? Why is that? Please elaborate. I’ll hang up and wait for your answer.

  • tvfreak

@Rebecca: So that’s from the two-part JAG episode that formed the backdoor pilot of NCIS. And based on what Ducky is saying it sounds eerily similar to a particularly shocking scene from American Horror Story, complete with time frame (20 or more years prior to 2003).

From TBBT episode 5.23 “The Launch Acceleration” –
    Leonard: What are you doing?
Amy: We’re playing doctor. Star Trek style.
Sheldon: I’m in hell, Leonard. [To Amy] Don’t stop.

  • Rebecca

Yeah, I guess so. I’ve never watched JAG or NCIS. I have another quote saved from that episode (or thereabouts) to use later, too. And that was a good TBBT episode. :-D

Yeah, I thought so too. There was a point last year when the cast and crew, I think, felt they’d been canceled. But nothing official ever came of it. I really only trust cancellation and renewal news when this site or Deadline reports it.

There is also the chance that Rules and Rob both come back with 13 Episode orders.

    quote from RoE [6.13]:
Russell to Timmy: Here, find out who this chick is. [hands him paper from pocket with supposed girl’s phone number on it]
Timmy: Oh let her go, Sir. She got away fair and square.

If CBS wants to make room for new shows:The first thing needs to do is cancel something:How to be a gentleman isnt enough:a gifted man,nyc 22,CSI NY and Unforgottable will be cancel.Rob as well.I have my doubts about:RoE:I think will have a final season (13 episodes).CSI Miami could have same treatment:A Final season.

Upgrade(improvements) that i want to see in person of interest season 2:

1 new main character – young female lead in.

2 a little bit more action.

3 little romance to make girls happy. I know that in this type of cbs dramas is hard to do this, but the show need more female viewers cause now sport hurt too much.

Person of interest is with most popular rookie season since NCIS LA! Only others tv shows with so popular(or more) rookie season tv series in last 10 years are: CSI, CSI miami, Greys, CSI NY! What a company!

This year is election year and guess who will make tons of money from all dramas and their 15+ million viewers next season? NCIS&POI will be gold mine! September, october and november politics will throw again hundreds of millions $ and here viewers count cause viewers(older one not teens and kids) vote.

NBC should buy Rules from CBS for 13 eps and see how it does.
