Nobody's happier than I am that the recycling of CBS topics and headlines in this weekly post is over after this week.

While I can imagine a scenario where CBS doesn't expand its sitcom time and Rules of Engagement gets renewed, I don't think that's a likely scenario. If CBS doesn't expand its sitcom time, I think it's likely that both Rules and Rob are canceled.

However if CBS does expand its sitcom time by an hour (which seems likely but not certain) then these are the outcomes I see in order of their decreasing likelihood.

  • Rules is renewed. Rob is canceled.
  • Both are renewed.
  • Both are canceled.
  • Rob is renewed. Rules is canceled. I view this as highly unlikely.

To make room for new dramas in next Fall's schedule, CBS will cancel at least one of the CSI offspring (NY or Miami), and maybe both. The conventional wisdom is that if its only one NY goes and Miami stays, but I don't think there's enough behind that conventional wisdom to trust it.

This is the last "regular" CBS Renew/Cancel Index post of the 2011-12 season. Next week Robert and I combine for our annual "Oddsmakers" final predictions for the season.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did CBS' shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Petar: I would also suggest that they change the location, because it just seems a little bizarre to me that the Machine only watches over New York. Bring the action to Philly or Cleveland or Chicago, I say! Maybe even have the show move to a different city each year.

Voting in the elimination game has now ended on this thread. It has continued on page 2 of the new CBS thread posted today.

  • Tracy

I think crap like Two and a Half Men should go and keep good clean shows like Rob, Unforgettable, and a Gifted Man. I like to laugh and get emotional about the shows I watch. That is how I release the stress in my life.

  • Baz

Greetings from the UK and here is my view based on what I know of the shows. Rules of Engagement is my favourite so it has to stay. Its got a story line to take it through at least another 13 episodes and is a solid performer. Britain doesn’t try hard with comedy so the more that cbs puts onscreen the better. Leave the dramas to us!

  • Mary

They can cancel. The Good Wife, and any of these dumb sitcoms of late plus all of the Reality Shows.

  • Quill

I love the Rules of Engagement and hope it lasts another season or two. Because most season of Rules have been only as a midseason replacement, the show has not aged badly and still has some life left in it. It doesn’t get massive ratings, but it is always a good consistent performer. Though I still love the show, I actually thought this was a poor season of Big Bang Theory. The show just wasn’t that funny this year.
