Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2011-12 season in May, 2012. (includes results from January 2- April 29, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The L.A. Complex  0.44
Ringer* 0.68
Nikita (F) :| :| :| 0.69
Gossip Girl :) :) :) :) 0.82
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.82
90210 :) :) :) :) 0.98
The Secret Circle :| :| :| 1.01
One Tree Hill* final season 1.07
Supernatural (F)     1.08
Vampire Diaries      1.81

5/3 Update: The Vampire Diaries, 90210 & Supernatural have all been renewed.

While I still think that The Secret Circle has a better chance at renewal than Nikita and Hart of Dixie, after two consecutive 0.5 adults 18-49 ratings I can no longer consider it "likely to be renewed" and it's now down to a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation.

And while The L.A. Complex may have a long and happy life in Canada, after its six episodes run on the CW this spring, you'll never see it on The CW again because of its dreadful ratings. I've also moved Ringer to "certain cancellation". As now the lowest rated CW show on any night (save TLAC), it's done.

This is the last "regular" CW Renew/Cancel Index post of the 2011-12 season. Next week Robert and I combine for our annual "Oddsmakers" final predictions for the season.

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did the CW's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Why will Nikita get a 13 episode final season, it’s hardly as deserving of it (only 2 seasons) as Gossip Girl (5 seasons), One Tree Hill (9 seasons). And also giving it 13 episodes would get it to 58 episodes, so even with a 22-24 episode season after that it wouldn’t get to 88, you would need to have a 30 episode season 4.

  • Sid

    “Total douchebag.”

That word is starting to be used a little too often on this site.

  • Kate

@Rachel: Agreed. I would much rather see a new Mark Schwann show on the air than another JS one. Mark doesn’t have to rely on “OMFG moments” (which are almost always dumb anyway) and extremely contrived plots to move a show along. Unlike JS, Mark actually stays involved in his shows beyond the first season and that’s evident by the quality of them.

Nikita is not going to get a “send off” season. It will have had only 2 seasons by the end of the year and send off seasons are reserved for veteran shows that actually deserve it. It has done nothing to merit one, sorry. The only shows on this network that will get those when the time comes are GG, 90210, TVD, and SPN.

    My final predictions:
    – 90210, TVD, TSC and Supernatural renewed for full seasons (22 or 24 episodes each).
    – Gossip Girl, renewed for a final season (13 episodes) expected to air on mid-season.
    – HoD, renewed for second season of 13 episodes expected to air on mid-season.
    – Ringer and Nikita, cancelled.

  • Sid

Well I think name-calling is just as immature as someones childish behavior; remember that the next time you use that word.

  • DonnaT

Sam Winchester would love to have his and big brother Dean’s “Heroes Journeys” continued as a birthday present tomorrow, May 2 :).

  • Michael

CrimTV, that’s true. We’ll just have to wait and see on May 17th. All we can do is wait patiently and speculate.

  • Sid

You want me to grow up like you so I can call people douchebags? I think I’ll pass.

  • Dan

Waiting for @TheEnd to tell on Michael for “insulting” Sid in 3…2…1…

  • Dan

@Sid-you do talk down to a lot of people on this site. I’ve seen it multiple time-you can be very rude so I don’t quite understand how you’re shocked to even be called a douchebag when that’s what you act like. If someone has a differing opinion than yours, you jump down their throats-stop doing that and people will most likely stop seeing you as a douchebag.

  • CLA

The problem with the LA complex is that A) anyone with the internet could have downloaded and watched the first six episodes 2 months ago and B)the first episode really was the weakest of the bunch.
As for the CW, the network has to decide if it wants to continue targeting the same fickle demo, or grow up and try to grab a larger audience, espicially since what they are doing right now is clearly not working.

  • Sid

“Another one who wasn’t raised right sheesh im losing track now”

Maybe that’s because you’re the problem, and not everyone else?

  • TVDude

Given the times slot and the likelihood of it performing even more poorly if moved, I think CW should cancel The Secret Circle. While its ratings are better, its expectations are/were higher than the other shows. I actually wouldn’t be surprised to see CW keep Nikita over it.

  • John

    Here’s what I think:
Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, 90210 renewed for full season.
Gossip Girl, Secret Circle renewed for 13 episode season.
Nikita, Hart of Dixie, Ringer canceled.

I don’t think The CW has the money to pickup all their new pilots so Hart of Dixie might have a chance.

  • Erin

How bad are things at The CW? they need to have at least four ratings for ringer to be renewed for a second season
I still have my hopes up for Ringer to be renewed
Last week’s average rating for ringer was 0.44
Ringer is the most popular show

  • Dan

@Michael-Yeah, Sid is just rude to people on this site. He is apparently the know-all, end-all of any conversation involving television renewals haha.

  • Joe

I honestly think they should dump all of their freshman shows. But they probably will want to renew one for a 13 episode season to save face, and that should probably be Hart of Dixie.

Shift Gossip Girl to the spring and bring in PROMISING new shows. Promote them well.

  • Sid

    @Micahel & Dan

Wow you two are hilarious! Thank you for making my day so much better than it already it is.

  • Dan

@Michael-I almost feel sorry for him, but then I realize I don’t care that much haha.

@Erin-I still have hope that Ringer will be renewed too haha. Definitely an original program (minus the whole Wild Things rip off!) and it’s a shame it didn’t catch up with viewers in enough time for them to see the last several episodes.

  • Dan

@Michael-Agreed! You can’t even mention Ringer on this site without getting attacked half of the time, it’s kind of scary. I really wish they would renew it-I think it has so much potential, but the numbers just aren’t there unfortunately :( Sarah Michelle Gellar better pop this kid out asap and get on another show!
