Recipe for Touch being a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation:

  • 1 part ratings that have fallen in all but one week of its run
  • 1 part Fringe renewal, removing an hour from the 2012-13 schedule for 13 episodes

Mix and wait for Fan Excuse Bingo play to begin!

Those who'll jump to play the "Fox can't cancel all their rookie dramas" square, may wish to refresh their memory about what happened last season.

This is the last "regular" Fox Renew/Cancel Index post of the 2011-12 season. Next week Robert and I combine for our annual "Oddsmakers" final predictions for the season.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Touch shouldnt be a toss up. Theres no way FOX would cancel all of their freshman dramas especially with House enbding this May and Fringe ending next season. Touch will be renewed since its doing well enough. Bob’s Burgers has enough episodes for a 13 episode third season so it will be back next year whether it gets more production eps or not. That being said, Alcatraz, The Finder and Napoleon Dynamite are all likely goners. With The Flintstones not moving forward and ND likely axed and no new animated shows in development FOX may very well have their five current animated shows on next fall. Simpsons, Cleveland, FG and AD will likely premiere next september with Bob’s Burgers probably joining it in November.

    @Rich

    Many Touch fans who liked 24, seem to want to see Touch cancelled so Kiefer can do the 24 movies they’ve waited so long for.

    @Mark, haha I’m sorry. I didn’t realize. Well our midseason shows are different. ;)

    “Theres no way FOX would cancel all of their freshman dramas especially with House enbding this May and Fringe ending next season. Touch will be renewed since its doing well enough.”

    They did last year. A 1.9 after your number 1 shows is not good at all.

    From The X-Files episode 1.01 “Pilot” –
    Mulder: Sorry, nobody down here but the FBI’s most unwanted.
    Scully: Agent Mulder. I’m Dana Scully. I’ve been assigned to work with you.
    Mulder: Oh, isn’t it nice to be suddenly so highly regarded. So who did you tick off to get stuck with this detail, Scully?

    I really like Touch – hope we can watch another season!

  • Alex Roggio

    @Bill,

    You don’t have to ignore the ratings. You just have to use your experience to figure out wether its a steep-enough dive for Fox to cancel the show or if the ratings are good enough for renewal due to so many other bad-performers on the show. Had you switched it to “likely cancelation”, I wouldn’t have complained, but making it a toss-up is basically you not bothering to make a prediction.

    I think one of the best articles you guys gave us was the Leap Day predictions. Not because of the silly Leap Day William gimmick, but because someone on this site actually predicted what would happen with the TV shows without “bubbling them” and waiting for the answer to be more obvious.

    In fact, Leap Day William has yet to have a prediction wrong although that will most likely change with the upcoming renewal/cancelation announcements.

    Yeah keep tossing up and bubbling shows, I guess I have to wait 4 years before someone makes some real predictions.

    @1mars
    Read an article on the upfronts last week where it was speculated that FOX was holding off “their inventory” until mid season. That tells me they havent a clue what they are doing based on current ratings or the new pilots are as bad as this year’s pilots.

    FOX is extremely space limited in the fall due to a combination of The X Factor, MLB postseason and just less time (14 weeks in fall vs 20 weeks after midseason).

    At most they’ll likely premiere two new sitcoms and one drama in the fall. Meanwhile, they can launch another sitcom or two, a new animation, two new dramas and one or two new Friday shows in the second half of the season.

    Now, if you assume they are renewing Touch, then it will probably take the place of either the two new sitcoms (Glee stays on Tuesdays) or the new drama. I don’t think this is likely, but it’s easy to see how someone could come to the conclusion that FOX is holding all of their new stuff for midseason. Don’t read too much into it.

    FRINGE – 43 (-3)
    RAISING HOPE – 32 (-2)
    ALCATRAZ – 39 (+3)
    TOUCH – 38 (+2)

    @tvfreak
    I know just how you feel. Alcatraz, Body of Proof, Cougar Town, Terra Nova, Missing, Touch, Harry’s Law, Last Man Standing, Charlie’s Angels (yes I watched it shut up haters), Who Do You think you are?, Extreme Makeover Home Edition, and many more are among my casualties this year alone. Heck, I even brought down DWTS!

    On other matters, I’ve done this on ABC already, but here’s a solution for the haters of the fantasy schedules. List your fave shows from the net (or the shows you want renewed most to keep on topic), in order from most liked to most hated. For example:

    1. Alcatraz
    2. Touch
    3. Raising Hope
    4. Fringe
    5. Glee
    6. The Cleveland Show
    7. House
    8. Bones
    9. The Finder
    10. Bob’s Burgers
    11. Napoleon Dynamite (I haven’t seen 8-11, so they’re based on promos)
    12. The Simpsons
    13. New Girl
    14. American Dad
    15. Family Guy

  • Ultima

    @Liz
    They gave [Touch] the best lead-in on the network. There’s absolutely no better spot for it. If it had aired on Mondays, like it was supposed to, people would just be whining about Bones being a weak lead-in.

    If Touch aired on Mondays, it would have been paired with House (though that’s also a weak lead-in). I think it may have had higher or similar ratings, but the problem of course is that its ratings continue to decline, which has nothing to do with comepetition.

    In any case, I think the Thu 9 timeslot after Idol is very overrated, especially if Big Bang moves there next season. FOX should put Glee there up until it goes on hiatus and Idol goes live; then put the Idol results show at 9, with a new drama (or Bones) at 8.

  • Rebecca

    @Nick, your votes are a bit off – so I’m going to go off @tvfreak’s votes (just prior to yours) and work my votes in while correcting the totals. I see how you wanted to vote, so that math is included here.

    FRINGE – 37 (-3)
    RAISING HOPE – 37 (+3)
    ALCATRAZ – 39 (+2)
    TOUCH – 39 (-2)

    quote from The X Files [1.13]:
    Scully: There’s something up there, Mulder.
    Mulder: Ooh, I’ve been saying that for years.

    Touch shouldnt be a toss up. Theres no way FOX would cancel all of their freshman dramas especially with House enbding this May and Fringe ending next season

    FOX canceled all their freshman dramas last year.

    If they expand their sitcom time to two hours a week, they only need ~90 hours of Monday-Thursday dramas next season. With three new dramas, Glee, and an extended season of Bones, there’s no need for Touch.

  • ToXiX

    Why exactly did fox cancel Lie To Me?

    Seems to me Fox might have been better off with Lie To Me stashed away until needed this season.

    Yeah keep tossing up and bubbling shows, I guess I have to wait 4 years before someone makes some real predictions.

    I’m wasting my time posting, because clearly you lack the reading competition skills of a an elementary school student, but here goes…

    @Alex Roggio

    This is from the very short artcile….

    This is the last “regular” Fox Renew/Cancel Index post of the 2011-12 season. Next week Robert and I combine for our annual “Oddsmakers” final predictions for the season.

    Gasp! Real predictions!

    There’s nothing wrong with calling something a “toss up” or “on the bubble” in advance of the end of the season is fine. How is it helpful to the reader if the author arbitrarily labels something that is a 50/50 as a renewal or a cancellation?

  • Ultima

    Edit buttons would be awesome…

  • ToXiX

    Alcatraz or Touch?

    Fox will definitely go with Touch.

    Bobs Burgers or Napoleon Dynamite?
    Bobs will already have episodes for the fall, but Fox may order a short 3rd season to fill up Spring
    Napoleon looks good for renewal other than the lack of time slot.

    And The Finder is D.E.A.D.

  • Michael

    Fox wants Keifer on TV. If they want to keep him, bring back 24 with a new format. Multiple terror attacks in several global locations. This eliminate the Kim/Starbuck filler plots. It also adds the need for several leading roles since Jack can’t be in DC, NYC and LA at once. Let Jack run CTU Division from Washington.

  • Mark

    @rob60990

    Great minds think alike!

  • Tom

    IMO, the biggest thing in Touch’s favor is Fox’s complete lack of spackle for Fall.

    Add in any long term Sutherland relationship, and I think it gets a 13 episode spackle order, preliminarily set for Spring.
