Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

@SJ – Even after a 9 week hiatus last spring, CT managed to do better than HE did its last few episodes this spring. CT never went below a 2 last spring, and was able to pull a 2 at from 9:30-10:30 against the Idol Finale. Even airing after MF repeats, it didn’t dip below a 2.

Take HE (or just about any comedy besides MF) off for nine months then put it on where they put CT and see how it does. No way you can make a case that The Middle, Suburatory, HE, or Apt. 23 would do better than CT did this spring.

  • LOL

@Mike, next fall let’s move NCIS LA from it’s cushion spot and move it to 10:00 on Tuesday, and see if it get’s 15 million viewers. As a hugh fan of NCIS, never got into the wannabe LA, not a big fan of H5O either, but your post just made me want to reply. Oh wait, I am pretty sure the last new episode of LA was a 2.4 if I am not mistaken, so I guess you can blame the 3.0 last night on, what did you say, the less stronger cast from H5O

  • Chris

@SJ You speak the truth. Cougar Town had its chance and squandered it. Not it’s bringing down the ratings of LMS. LMS was NEVER given a chance and performed well for 19 episodes to CT’s 0. LMS was put on ABC’s worse night against NCIS and was never given a compatible lead in or lead out show. LMS for renewal no doubt

  • Jeff R

How is a lead-out bringing down the rating for the lead-in?

CT haters can’t stand it when another show is given the CT scenario because then they can’t hate. If it were another show, like HE, you’d call shenanigans, too.

When HE dipped to levels CT never saw in that slot, it was all excuses.

This shouldn’t even be CT vs HE because they’d be a great pair – but I think HE fans are starting to get nervous.

  • chrisss

    @ Chris

What does it say about LMS if people stopped watching it because of the show that airs after it?

  • Gleefan

    Is glee 18-49 rating a 2.3 or a 2.4? Table says 2.3 but the text says 2.4!

  • Anita

From the Mark Pedowitz article – “Or look at live-plus seven numbers, which we don’t get paid for, and we’re tripling our women 18-to-34 ratings. You start to realize that these shows are working”. To me that says that The CW is still heavily focused on women 18-34 and that will end up playing a part in which show gets renewal next season. Just speculating but I would tend to believe a show like Hart of Dixie has a far higher women rating than a show like Nikita. Is there anywhere that tracks the W18-34 to see how the various CW shows are faring in that demo this season? Thanks.

  • Ben

My opinion is that Cougar town is not coming back ( Sorry CT fans ).
And yes ABC shoud take the fault for that, even thought CT has never been big in ratings it was doing fine. Now they take it of the air so long and put it behind a show they dont match, but where are all the true fans now. Is this the actual fan base? Their is no way that ABC will renew CT because it is not showing any growing, and it needs at least 2 more seasons to syndication. Plus the competition is big and other comedies are doing better. It may also depend on comedy pilots that ABC has this year.

  • OERM

Private Practice has a loyal fan base.
ABC should renewed for a full 22 season, the show has proved it’s not depending of GA. ABC has not seen those ratings in Tuesday ay 10 pm in years.

  • The End

Rarely any show keeps its premiere numbers, as these are the people that initially tune into the first episode of the first season and wonder if the show is worth watching, those that do stay, those that don’t, leave. Simple.

  • Bunny

    @Ben

Cougar Town is coming back…Bill Lawrence said so

  • Michelle

Is there another site that you can go to and get the half hour numbers? I was wanting to see them for the Monday 10pm slot. They were never posted on the Monday ratings or final ratings page. I was hoping someone could tell me where to look. Thanks!

  • ModernGleeEndings

I really wish ABC would just announce what is getting renewed. They did treat CT like crap this season and I think it deserves to have a fourth season. I watch it, but not religiously. I still feel bad for its fans and the way it got treated.
That being said I am a Happy Endings fan and I really hope it gets renewed. It was shoved to the side in a night full of repeats its last few weeks. People tend (from those I’ve talked to) DVR it or watch it online. I think its got a pretty big fanbase and word of mouth that it’ll get renewed *fingers crossed* If ABC ends up being idiots like the are. Then maybe NBC would pick up its option. I’ve always said that it would fit it better wtih Community and Parks and Recreation anyway. ABC is TOO family oriented half the time.
My idea (if ABC does want to aim at a younger audience) is to renew HE, CT and Don’t Trust the B and launch a completley different comedy block. I love Modern Family, but none of those shows really mesh well with the audience that watches it.
    That’s my two cents. :-)

A lot of you are still whistling the death march for “Unforgettable,” despite the fact that the show won its time period last night in total viewers.

CBS is the most tolerant network for not putting ALL of its eggs into the 18-49 basket. CBS brags about having the most number of viewers, so a program that can come up with over 10,000,000 viewers at 10PM is not so bad.

I’m still not saying that “Unforgettable” will be back for a second season. But, some of you folks, and I doubt that ANY of you work in television programming, are so stubborn in your assertions that U/F IS history.

I’m just saying it still has a chance. You all MUST know Yogi Berra’s most famous “Yogi-ism”: “It’s not over until the fat lady sings.”

And, the only thing “certain” are death and taxes.

  • LOL

We are talking ABC here, since when does this network renew shows with some of the demos we have been seeing with certain fan favorite shows? I know it is spring, but we are not talking NBC here, and we know what CBS would do with these shows, and ABC is closer to CBS than NBC with the shows they have cancelled.

Could we Please have a poll on Tvbythenumbers: What will the ratings for The Voice Finals be next Monday and the next Tuesday’s results show? (Justin Bieber is scheduled to appear.)

And What will the ratings for Smash be next Monday and the next Monday after that without The Voice lead in?

There have been a lot of comments on this over the last few weeks, and it would be fun to see how well the viewers on Tvbythenumbers could be on predicting these shows.

    Thank You

  • HarryWarden

I really hope Unforgettable gets renewed in spite of its low demo. It’s an entertaining show with a good cast dynamic. Love the computer lady on this far better than the one on NCIS and the one on Criminal Minds, who has gotten annoying lately.

  • Holly

    @Ralph Hahn,

Please point to any instance where a show on CBS was renewed because it won its time slot. I’ll wait.

  • SJ

CT didn’t air against Idol but for the finale, so…
