Update: 12:35p PT May 3: Now officially official. 90210 and The Vampire Diaries have been renewed as well.

Update 12:20p PT May 3: looks like the timing of telling the cast and crew was...not perfect. Tweets have been pulled down etc., but as far as I'm concerned telling the cast and crew the show is renewed *is* an official confirmation, just not an official announcement. I'd expect some sort of official announcement shortly.

Some noise on Twitter from folks working at the show that Supernatural has been renewed and our friends at Zap2it have confirmed it's true. Supernatural has been renewed for an 8th season. No surprise to anyone following the CW's Renew/Cancel Index.

May 3, 2012 (Burbank, California) - The CW Network has given early pickups to the network's top-rated show, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, fan favorite SUPERNATURAL, and the world's most-famous zip code, 90210, with all three series to return for the 2012-2013 season.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES will return for a fourth season of bloody good drama this fall, SUPERNATURAL will mark its eighth season with the monster-hunting Winchester brothers on The CW, and on 90210, the gang from West Beverly will return for season five.

Based on the series of books by L. J. Smith, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES is from Bonanza Productions Inc., Outerbanks Entertainment and Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios with executive producers Kevin Williamson ("Scream," "Dawson's Creek"), Julie Plec ("Kyle XY," "Wasteland"), Leslie Morgenstein ("Gossip Girl," "Private") and Bob Levy ("Gossip Girl," "Privileged").

SUPERNATURAL is from Warner Bros. Television in association with Wonderland Sound and Vision, with executive producers McG ("Charlie's Angels," "The O.C."), Robert Singer ("Midnight Caller"), Jeremy Carver ("Being Human") and Phil Sgriccia.

90210 is produced by CBS Productions with executive producers Patti Carr ("Life Unexpected," "Private Practice") and Lara Olsen ("Life Unexpected," "Private Practice").

  • RyanCanada

  • Dillan

Yay for the SPN fans. The show’s ratings have been very good this season so no surprise.

I’m quite surprised an early renewal for VD and 90210 weren’t announced too.

  • Z

    YES! YES! YES! So exciting

  • Ben

Yayayay and happy for the Supernatural fans.

Now I’m waiting for the TVD renewal and hoping we get a TSC renewal too!

  • TomKH

    Nikita/Ringer/HOD/TSC fans highjacking the thread in 3, 2, 1…

The show has a massive fan-base, this is not a shocker. However, I’m shocked that TVD didn’t get an early renewal this year.

  • Hades

TVD and 90210 probably were too but the tweets came from people who work on SPN so that was all they mentioned. I cant see them not renewing them too.

  • rida

YAYY!!! <33 relaxed now that i have a yr more! gooodd!!!!!!!!! <333 BEST SHOW EVER!!

  • rob60990

    Not surprised.

  • Hades

Hope its not a final season renewal and thats why its getting the early announcement all on its lonesome?

  • Kate

I’m waiting for an official press release. It seems strange to me they’d only announce SPN’s renewal and not TVD (and 90210 as well). But it’s been pretty obvious that SPN was going to be renewed. Great news, hopefully more follows :)

Looking forward to another year of pretty consistent 0.7 shares. I enjoy it, if it weren’t for Supernatural I doubt I’d bother turning on the TV Friday nights.
