Big come back by GH, hopefully it continues!

  • JayTN

The entire ABC Daytime line-up was up from the previous week, not just GH (sorry if I sound like a hater, but just putting things into perspective). “Good Morning America” was up 300,000 viewers (5.31 million vs. 5.01 million), “The View” was up 40,000 (3.37 vs. 3.33), “The Chew” was up 150,000 (2.27 vs. 2.12). Even the lowly – and canceled – “The Revolution” was up 270,000 viewers (1.43 vs. 1.16) from the previous week when it aired repeat episodes. That viewer number for “The Revolution” was its best performance since the week of February 27.

Wow, not a great improvement for Days but we will take anything positive we can get!!! Still not sure if the changes behind the scenes at Days are going to be positive or another bust like the last “reboot”. Well I will remain optimistic and believe it when I see it. It just sucks that we have to wait so long to see these changes on screen.

I heard there is going to be a MAJOR cliffhanger before the show goes on break for the Olympics (hopefully the demise/death of Stefano, that would be AWESOME!!!!). Can’t wait!!!!

  • Derrick

    Good for all soaps!

  • Sean

I don’t get all this excitement about GH’s ratings. It lost viewers in the 18-49 women demo… again.

Total viewership is meaningless to ABC. The 18-49 demo is what only matters to the alphabet network.

OLTL had more total viewers than GH. But ABC still picked GH because it had more viewers in the 18-49 demo than OLTL.

  • Chrisann D

Yeah!!!! I think any improvement is something to celebrate! I am thrilled! Good for all the soaps!

  • Richard

Wow considering how bad primetime is doing I am just shocked that daytime went up. Pretty much everything in primetime is down.

The PR guys at ABC must have been on vacation this week. I cannot believe they did not feel they had something to boast about with daytime this week with everything being up that much.

Dave, I can’t imagine either that ABC is happy about the 18-49 but they may be happy that GH did finally go up in the 18-34 and it has been stuck at that .4 in 18-34 for a long time now.

But as you said last year so often it was said by different folks in the media and ABC folks that GH was doing so well in that key demo. And that is where they have taken the biggest hit.

  • Bumfuzzled

Sadly in a few more years there won’t even be a soap category…….

  • Karen C

JayTN, you’re not a hater, just realistic, which I like. I don’t think that GH’s rise has anything to do with the so called greatness of the show, it has to do with every soap rising because the Nielsen viewers had their tv’s on. The ratings are a flawed system. Up one week, down the next for no good reason. For all it’s supposed greatness, GH is still down from last year. I don’t want to be a hater either, but I just don’t buy the crap of having teenage Starr from OLTL being a threat to Sonny. He hasn’t been taken down in 20 years by more formidable opponents. Why would a teenager from a cancelled show entice viewers?

  • Chrisann D

Karen, LOL I thought the same thing. How could Starr have a chance with Sonny? But I guess its not real life…just fantasy. I think that is why we watch scripted shows, they aren’t real life. But anyhow she won’t be shooting Sonny…he is like a cockroach, nothing kills him.

  • Richard

Just the few times I saw Starr before I quit, she just seems so out of her league with Sonny. I thought the actress herself added so much to that. Maurice Benard is not the greatest actor in the world but he is capable and can really rise to the occasion. Even when Starr was in the hospital and they told her about her boyfriend and her child she couldn’t even act her way to make me feel anything for her at all.

So I can’t even imagine her being able to make viewers think she is any kind of a threat.

That is the one thing that has always impressed me about GH is the level of acting on the show. Even when the stories are bad and the writing sucks the actors have always been so good. The weakest links in the last few years were Benard and Burton who were once so masterful but to me have gotten lazy in the last few years.

If the writers came up with some story to really make a strong rival to take Sonny down, it might be enough to lure me back.

I thought maybe they were going there with the May sweeps when Starr’s dad (sorry I forget his name) comes back. But reading some spoilers the last couple of days I think that is going to be at least at first to wind up some kind of story that started on OLTL. In the spoilers that had his name in it I didn’t recognize any of the characters names at all. So I just assume they were all from OLTL.

  • Richard

    @Karen and whoever,

I was watching the local news while eating supper. Usually don’t do that but was flipping through and stopped as they were talking about the heatwave hitting the mid-west.

They were talking about daytime temps being up the last few weeks for parts of the mid-west. Maybe that had something to do with pushing people inside to watch TV again during the day.

I know we have been close to 90 already several times this year which is odd for us. And they were showing that parts of Texas were already hitting the mid to upper 90s already.

Who knows. Ratings ups and downs can be so strange. It is really weird with so much of primetime being down. I did think later after I made my last comment.

The primetime ratings have all been down this week. The daytime ratings were for last week. I just wonder if that will spell disaster for daytime next week if they follow the trend of the primetime ratings this week. All the big shows in primetime this week have been lower than normal except for a few.

  • Jay

Great improvement for GH! I’ve really been enjoying most of the stories on the show (although I must say I’ve never been anywhere near as jaded as “fans” I encounter on the internet). Seeing as One Life to Live was my favorite soap when it was on the air, I’m loving the inclusion of the characters in Port Charles. And with my favorite character Tea coming soon that’s more to look forward to!

  • Jeff

Good for GH! Great overall improvement. Weird that demo #’s went down a small bit, but that will come. Keep going GH!

  • Stephen judson

It was already explained why Starr was allowed to handle Sonny the way she is.

Good for GH, B&B, and Days.

  • JayTN

Richard…the day-to-day numbers for the soaps (provided at the Soap Opera Network link above) may give us an indication whether the soaps will decline next week or not.

Monday was the highest rated day for B&B, “Days”, and GH. Tuesday was the highest rated day for Y&R, with Monday a close second. For Y&R, B&B and “Days”, Friday was the third highest rated day, after Monday and Tuesday (or Tuesday and Monday in the case of Y&R). GH, by contrast, did not do well on Friday; only the Tuesday episode was watched by fewer people. In fact, the Friday episode lost 100,000+ viewers from Thursday’s episode.

I agree about Kristen Alderson (Starr) not being a very believable actress. I have never much cared for her or her bratty character. At another soap website that I used to visit (but refrained from posting because of the bad attitudes of some people there) it was considered heresy to say anything negative about Alderson. If someone said anything that was not gushing praise of her, they were treated like they just kicked their dog.

GO GH and DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! keep up the good work

  • Kayla Rae

Great job, Days!!! But I strongly disagree with the person who says that Stefano should be killed off! Absolutely NOT! He is the villain we have relished and loved to hate for soooo long! He’s such a delight to savor…it’s hard to believe that you wish him gone. I cannot imagine Days without him!

Days is doing a fantastic job…the best soap on the air!!!

  • lanalovessuperman

GH has definitely improved over the past few months.
It’s been years since I’ve been this hooked. I love all the storylines.
