YAY for GH. It has been so good these last couple of months. Now if only One Life to Live could be revived. Oh how I miss that show and all its characters….

  • MBmomof3

    Go soaps!
I too thought it was funny that Sonny has McBain all over him, Johnny & Crazy Connie/Kate messing with him but he answers his front door to Starr like she’s selling Girl Scout cookies. WADDUP!!? Where’s your security detail? I have tighter security in my suburban subdivision. I will say, that it was the best performance KA has given since joining GH. And MB has been bringing his A game the last few weeks. Currently enjoying all the shows for the most part, but GH has been great!

2.5 million for GH on Monday, that’s huge once The Revolution clears in July GH should be up to 2.4 or 2.5 million before the fall.

GH is so intense right now as I was watching the last couple of episode for the first time in a couple of months and there was so much action going on. I love what they’ve done to GH now.

Good job for DAYS also as I’m hoping NBC looks at bringing in a new soap within the next couple of years to compliment DAYS.

  • Sean

GO SOAPS!!!!! I LOVE GH! PLEASE WATCH, WHOEVER THAT IS NOT WATCHING..SHOULD ATLEAST GIVE IT A TRY! ITS ON FIRE.

  • Richard

    @Jay TN,

I had looked at those too. I had noticed how they fell but soaps have been weird anyway the last few years. I can remember when GH had its biggest days on Fridays and now Fridays are generally the worst day of the week. It is so weird.

I tend to think spoilers have a great deal to do with that though. I mean I know right now that I read the spoilers now more than ever since I am not watching — maybe wishfully hoping something will make me want to tune in. But nothing sounds interesting at all. It is just more of been there already done that and already seen it.

And when you look at the spoilers like I did today and see characters names that I have never heard of and know nothing about in them. I mean I read a whole thread on a spoiler for GH today at Soap Opera Network and there was not one character that I even knew who was. And I have only quit watching for a month or so.

Why in the world would any lapsed fan want to tune in when they have no idea who these people are.

Oh and Jay I know those type of sites. I absolutely hate them and refuse to post at any of them. It reminds of some of the threads for shows like Fringe, etc. Don’t go there and say anything against those shows. Those fan boys and fan girls will eat you alive.

I have to say that I’m VERY impressed with the changes over at DAYS. I think it’s amazing that they’ve managed to bring back so many heavy hitters from the ’80s and ’90s. It’s as if it’s 1995 all over again, and that is a very good thing indeed. Also, the writing has been far crisper than it was in the 2000s, which was by and large a ridiculous joke.

DOOL may well go down in the near future, but at least it will go down fighting in high style! Kudos to TPTB associated with the show.

  • TV Gord

Those of you who say you get flamed every time you say something negative (about Starr or Fringe…both of which I happen to love), who cares??? You’re entitled to your opinion, and you shouldn’t let anyone scare you off (even the majority)! These message boards would be as dull as paint if everyone agreed all the time!

  • animal

GH is the best soap on right now, the others are SOOO boring, idk why GH dosnt have more viewers, its GREAT!!!!

  • Justin121

    The Bold & The Beautiful.

The out-of-the-demo viewers alone are more than the total viewers for Days and GH.

NBC’s primetime is bearly pulling 3 million and B&B does it in daytime.

I really think Nets should consider the overall decline they’re experiencing before cancelling the rest of the soaps.

  • Sean

Very True Justin! plus, GH Beats anything the CW has to offer…Soaps are not as dead as people think.

  • Chrisann D

While I really loved Starr on One Life and I am having a hard time with her on GH I think she(the actress) is just going through a feeling of displacement. I think once she gets used to being on GH she will do great. It might take time since she was on One Life since she was just a babe. New town, new show…changes are hard. Any how GO SOAPS!!!!

  • sofaspud

    @ Justin and Sean:

I used to think that way too (overall decline, not just soaps, so why pick on them) but as it’s been discussed the issue is cost.

Soaps are about $5M a week to produce while scripted primetime is around $1M. Yes, more airtime means more commercials (revenue) but the ad rates are probably cheaper and still it’s hard to cover a $4M spread.

I wish that the nets, rather than cutting and cutting budgets (or worse, canceling shows) would instead seek out different revenue sources for these shows, in particular GH which I’ve been watching on and off for 32 years. Specialty DVDs, product placement (which they’ve started now)… hell, even pay-per-view. Also cross-referencing shows is a good idea. I remember many years ago watching an episode of “Dynasty” (first season) and laughed out loud in a scene where Jeff walks in on Fallon watching GH. But that’s not a bad idea. Maybe mention it on “Grey’s Anatomy”, or establish that either the sexy younger wife on “Modern Family” or the daughter on “The Middle” as huge fans. That would be a lot cheaper than promos.

I understand that Starr is very hurt over losing her child and boyfriend, but the way the PTB at GH are handling this storyline is very corny, IMO. She takes the word of Sonny’s enemies, Anthony and Johnny without doing all of the research and just acts like it is only Sonny’s fault. You mean she can research on the internet about Sonny’s criminal actions but cannot bother to research Anthony or Johnny’s? WTH?!?!?! It is just unbelievable!! She is way out of his league though and needs to put that gun down!! I feel bad for her though because of the way she was written into GH, so anyone not knowing who she was or remembered how much she grew up and matured on OLTL, I understand why they would be turned off and not interested. Seems like those GH fans who didn’t watch OLTL, still have issues with her. Sick of the Kate/Connie DID stuff. Seems like Carlivati is writing this as cartoonish as opposed to us feeling sorry that she is mentally ill and needs help. I know this is fantasy, but isn’t DID supposed to be serious stuff? Appears he is making a mockery of it like he did with Jessica and Vicki on OLTL. As far as the ratings, any little improvement is better than none, but to me, it is still nothing to get excited about since the ratings increases appear to be very minimal. The numbers start running together to me after a while, LOL.

SofaSpud, What a great idea promoting soaps and other shows within a show. Even promote Primetime shows on GH. Maybe the networks one day will do that on a regular basis.

  • MBmomof3

I saw that soap-friendly Chelsea Handler featured GH’s Connie/Carlie catfight on Chelsea Lately. That catfight was awesome. Reminded me of Dynasty at its best.

  • diana

Felicia returned to GH last week, GH IS better than it was before “Cartini” took over. DAYS is putting Sami&Lucas back together again, and that’s got my interest.

  • Joe

The soaps, pertricually DAYS (EJ NOT Stefano’s son, Sami and lucas back together, now SHAYNE is back) and GH (FELICIA….enough said), are doing fantastic now……glad to see the ratinge reflecting that!!!!!!!

  • Joe

ohhh almost forgot, for DAYS Alexandra’s Tumor storyline, really emotional and inspiring!!!!

  • Richard

    Sofaspud,

You are so right in what you said. People keep throwing that up that with primetime being down the networks shouldn’t fuss about daytime. But that is no excuse.

The fact that primetime is down is what is hurting soaps the most. Soaps cost so much more. The networks have got to find a way to produce these shows 5 days a week with these large costs, multiple sets, etc. Overall the network as a whole has less money to draw on since viewing is down across the board. And since soaps cost the most they get hurt the most.

And the comparison of stuff to another network like The CW is so wrong too. That is the biggest misconception that folks make in regards to cancellation. Whether a show gets cancelled or not has more to do with the shows on their own network and not on other networks. CW shows fight for cancellation against other CW shows. They compete weekly for viewers with the other networks but at cancellation time CW execs do not compare CW shows with ABC shows. They look at all their shows and decide which is going to be cancelled based on overall performance.

NBC is really hurting in primetime and many think that will save Days of Our Lives. But the fact that they are hurting so bad in primetime right now may end up being the final nail in Days coffin. Many people were speculating that NBC had so many other problems they could care less about Days. Well that was proven wrong as a story I was reading the other day that was posted here basically said that NBC was the one who dictated all these changes be made now.

IF they weren’t concerned then why in the world worry in the midst of all the networks problems about Days — a show they only license. The fact is probably that with less money coming into the network they have to worry since they are putting out good money for a show that is obviously underperforming. I would bet that if these changes don’t work NBC will demand to pay less for the show and if Sony refuses then NBC will opt out.

One last comment. I agree that cross promotion is a great idea. As to the DVD thing, I think the biggest thing that hurts the soaps is what I was reading at a site last night. I was reading an article and some posts about the new DVD releases made by some company that feature some soaps that I think used to air on CBS. The article caught my eye because I was hoping that it might include releases of The Edge of Night.

One of the things the article mentioned was the problem with some of the episodes of soaps is that there was never any consideration of syndication with soaps so no one ever sought music rights that included future distribution of the shows. So now the music that is used in many of these old episodes of soaps have to be renegogiated again. And the prices that it entails can be very steep which has to be added in to the cost of the DVD sets. Sometimes the cost is too high. So the company is having to reedit some scenes in old episodes to change songs or overdub new music in.

  • Caringtype1(Save Harry!)

One way GH could save money is cutting down on all the sets. I mean the “highway” starr and sonny were on ws ridiculous, because you could how it cut off into black. They don’t need the metro court sets at all. They have nothing to do with plot and there are like 5 of them!!! They should have a cafeteria set in the hospital, or go to kellys if they need a restaurant. And Im not really sure what improvement there has been that everyone is talking about. Ive watching GH everyday for years and Ill watch until the end(ill give it 10 years), there hasn’t been much improvement, Im still seeing Soony, Carly, jason, with their problems and stories I could care less about. mke the show more hospital oriented, show more of characters like Luke, Anna, Patrick, Matt, Maxie, Sam, Spinelli, Olivia, heather, and steve and get some new docs and nurses. Then we’ll talk about improvement.
