    Speaking of cross-promo and product placement…I saw GH ‘s Spinelli’s Avenger’s reference featured on the Soup. Glad to see the E! Network is showing GH some love. I also saw Susan Lucci on Bravo this week when Andy Cohen named Brian Frons “Jackhole of the Week”. Lucci is always a great interview, but Frons is Jackhole of the Year in my book.

  • Andy

    GH has been must watch for me the last few weeks. The pace of the show has been brisk and I love the seeing what Heather is up to. Glad Anna is staying on board and I am even liking the Kate/Connie story. The writers have even salvage the Vaughn’s/Dancers story. I hope all the soaps and GH continue to build their numbers and maybe even reverse the trend of soaps being cancelled and maybe adding one or two in the next few years.

  • Jack

    I’ll bet OLTL would still be a respectable #3 with 2.8 million. When are they going to put GH an hour earlier? I think ratings-wise it makes more sense to do it sooner, not later.

    MBmom

    I used to think Brian Frons was the be all and end all of the problems with soaps at ABC esp. GH. After him I blamed Phelps and Guza.

    All I ever heard or read was that they were why GH was Sonny/Jason/Carly centric and mob-centric. And that they were the reasons that GH was so mismanaged and stunt oriented.

    Well all 3 are gone now and the same problems that plaqued GH are still there. So I have totally began to wonder if those 3 were the real problems.

    Is someone else high up dictating what is still going on at GH. I read an interview the other day with FV and he said in the interview that GH is Sonny-centric and the way it read with him there GH will stay that way.

    I still don’t have any more regard for Phelps or Frons than I did before, but they aren’t the total jackholes to me that they used to be. And I have really changed my mind about Guza. I still don’t think he is a great writer but I don’t think he is terrible anymore.

  • Richard

    Jack, They won’t be putting GH there at least til the end of the summer. Good Morning AMerica in the afternoon has that time slot for the summer.

  • Rob R

    More viewers watched NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” this week than NBC’s “Awake,” a multi-million dollar primetime show on Thursday night at 10 pm. More viewers watched CBS’s “Young and the Restless” than the entire NBC prime time line-up on Thursday. The so-called death of the soaps has to be put into that perspective. Audience fragmentation is happening across the board.

  • Richard

    But again even putting in perspective what does it matter? If anyone thinks that just because one or more of the soaps has more viewers than a primetime show or a whole lineup that it will save said soap opera then they are totally not looking at facts.

    It doesn’t matter what the ratings for said soap are if it is still not high enough to make up for the cost of producing said show.

    Days of Our Lives even on a reduced budget most likely still costs a whole lot more to produce than Awake does — simply for the number of set changes, the amount of writers, the size of the cast, the fact that they work 5 days a week for longer hours, and everything else.

    Putting it in perspective you have got to look at the ratio of cost vs. ratings. A show that costs a lot more has got to have a higher rating.

    Take a look at CBS with the cancellations of Without a Trace and Cold Case which were doing moderate ratings still when they were cancelled, but the reason often given for the cancellations of the shows was the cost of them. Some shows that were kept over them actually had slightly lower ratings.

    I totally agree with what so many of you say that audience fragmentation is happening across the board, but I just see it as another excuse used by fans to justify ratings.

    It is just like I read in one of the ratings threads for primetime the other night. someone actually came on there and said well so and so show is the top show downloaded on Torrent sites so it has to be popular and have a lot of viewers. That one is so funny since that is illegally downloading the show to watch. The network absolutely gets nothing for that at all. But yet fans won’t to cite it as a reason their show shouldn’t be cancelled.

  • Rob R

    Richard– One hour of Days of Our Lives does not cost more than one hour of “Awake.” The budget for DAYS is rumored to be $1 million per week, or $200,000 per episode. “Awake” probably clocks in at $2 to $3 million per episode, approximately ten times greater, yielding an audience smaller than DAYS, 9 hours earlier in the afternoon.

  • Dave.A

    @Jack

    I’m not sure that the 2:00pm slot is a good thing for General Hospital. ABC might be sending GH to the wolves with this slot. Yes, it no longer wouldn’t be competing with rating powerhouse CBS’s Let’s Make a Deal which has crushed GH in all statististics. However it would now have to face not one, but two shows, which are on par with GH in the ratings: Days of Our Lives and The Talk.

    Note that Days continue to air at 1:00pm in the East coast, including where I live. But I know that in many places in the Midwest and the South, Days now airs at 2:00pm. GH and Days could end up destroying each other and both being cancelled in 2013. Of course, I pray that this doesn’t ever happen. But if that’s the case, I sure hope that they bring CBS’s The Talk along with them. That show sucks so bad. It’s worst than The Revolution.

  • Richard

    Rob R,

    But you are still not taking everything into perspective either which you were urging others to do.

    One thing that you are so forgetting is that primetime ad space goes for a much higher premium than afternoon ad space does.

    When you take that in perspective it still comes down to cost. NBC can get more money to offset the budget which I still doubt is as high as you are estimating for an episode of Awake. I am sure it is high but with both we only have to go by rumors of what they are as no one has said for sure even on Days in awhile.

    It has to be more than what those last estimations were as it was reported on several sites that Ken Corday has had to pump more of his own money into the show to bring back all those expensive stars for the reboot. So with that those last estimates rumored have to be higher — at least until all the rumored firings take place.

    But again you just bring it back to the ad space, primetime advertising is a higher rate — so the network gets more money to offset and that brings Awakes overall budget down as far ratio of what the show costs and what they get or charge for advertising during that hour.

    The network is still going to have to push Days harder as daytime rates are already lower but when the ratings are low that brings it down even further.

  • Richard

    @Dave,

    I have wondered the same thing about whether GH would hurt when moved back. Here when it is moved back it will be in direct competition with The Talk and Days of Our Lives.

  • Richard

    Oh and one more thing that Awake has going for it since so many keep throwing up the DVR counts is that Awake adds about 77% more 18-49 viewers each week when the DVR counts are added. The last one they jumped from a .9 Live plus 1 to a 1.6 in the Live plus 7.

    Looking at the comparison of Days in its average weekly rating and the season to date which has been confirmed to add the 7 day DVR viewing Days percentage of DVR gains is not that high.

    Which I still don’t think that matters as much as most do, but since so many others keep bringing it up then I will use it too.

  • Dave.A

    @Richard

    The way I see it is that anything can happen. General Hospital could end being very succesful in its new timeslot to the point that it drive The Talk (and maybe even Days of Our Lives) out of business. But the opposite could also happen too and GH could end with lower ratings than it does now. I’m opened to all possibilities.

    It’s just that I find it hilarious that people are assuming that GH will automatically be successful at 2:00pm just because it no longer won’t have to deal with Let’s Make a Deal. It seems that these people forgotten that GH has aired at 3:00pm for 35 years including all the time when it was #1 in the 1980s.

    Oh God, DOOL is COOL is like my sister, she wants Stefano dead also but I agree with Kayla Rae, Stefano is the best villain on daytime TV. I used to watch Days when I was a kid during the summers and I started to really watch once Stefano hit Salem. A soap needs a good villain or that soap will be so boring to watch.

    It is so depressing and disheartening to hear people praise the stories on GH. This is 2012, not 1962. Yet people are praising a show where an alleged rape victim has to apologize to her husband for hurting HIS feelings. Where women are still depicted as helpless, fragile creatures (see: Lulu and Sam) who are kidnapped and then must rely on their big strong boyfriends to come and save them. Where a woman with a mental illness is shown for entertainment value, AND taken advantage of by a man who KNOWS she’s mentally ill. Where 2 women have a fight straight out of a 30-year-old episode of Dynasty, that would make a first-year acting student cringe. Where intelligent, independent characters like Alexis have been reduced to 2-bit day player status.

    It’s not just that the show is vile, it’s that people in this day and age actually still think this is entertaining.

  • Richard

    I think that has been my biggest problem with GH for years now is the depiction and treatment of women.

    GH to me has such a rich history of dynamic and great female characters — strong female characters like Lesley Webber, Monica Quartermain, Tracy, Ginny Blake, Celia Quartermain, Laura, Bobbi, and so on.

    Yes at times they were victimized but they fought back and overcame. And they were willing to sacrifice for their families, and fight for what they wanted.

    Guza and so many others with the show just seem like they hate or hated women — at least that is what shows in their writing and direction for the female characters on the show. It is really sad.

  • Melanie

    @me and Richard.
    I totally agree and great points!! GH doesn’t showcase the strong and tough female characters anymore and I think that is a crying shame.

  • I like this show

    DOOL is good?…..I find that very hard to believe. Last I checked they were still playing storylines out from the 90′s and HEY they now even have old cast members to boot. Z.Z.Z.Z.Z.Z. FYI Lexi will be done. Sami Lucas EJ Nicole Rafe love polygon will play on for another 5 years lol. Show im sure is still total crap.

    GH has been better lately can’t wait for whole Kate/Connie thing to be over though. Don’t really care for Heather Webber and the little of seen of Felicia. Starr taking Sonny gunpoint isn’t really believable BUT if some of you would of listened Sonny said “i could have taken that gun from you”. It’s all leading somewhere just watch.

  • MBmomof3

    @me, I understand your point of view Re: the current GH storylines. I find it disgustihg that Sam’s rape has been all about Jason and his pain. That said, this is fiction. One of the things I have always liked about soaps is they call attention to social issues. Before you get too judgemental, I sit on our local NAMI board and prefer that mental illness be discussed rather than kept in the closet. I could go on & on about issues that soaps have brought to the forefront over the years that fans have said made them feel they aren’t alone.

    I will add that I have read that the reason Genie Francis doesn’t like reprising the role of Laura is they insist on writing her as the wounded dove. The writers need to get over this. And Lulu & Sam are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves, and frankly, would make for a better story in my opinion.

  • Richard

    @MBMom

    I like the fact that soaps have done social issue things too. But I like when they do them right and with class.

    GH for years has not done that. Now class was when Monica had breast cancer or when Stone had AIDS, etc.

    What little I saw or have read about this mental illness story with Connie there is not much class in it at all. I have actually cringed and not in a good way at some of the things I have seen.

    And years ago I honestly felt social issues had a place in GH but with the way they write so much over the top stuff to the point it has taken over, the issue stuff is just out of place.

    I mean how can u take seriously anything concerning mental illness on a show that no one ever dies, etc.

    Maybe it applies to other soaps as well but the one I am familiar with is GH and it just seems to be suffering from DID itself. I mean for years it was a show that wanted to be taken seriously, with high drama, great acting, and ground breaking. But so many of the elements adopted now as part of the show with no one ever dying, no one ever paying for their crimes, etc. just leaves a show that it is hard to take seriously at all.

    I guess I am funny or strange. Now when I used to watch the night show Soap, I expected over the top and crazy stuff. It was in place there. I loved it and still do.

    But I don’t expect all those over the top elements when I watch GH. Give me a touch of comedy, etc. but I started watching GH for the drama, the stories, etc. — not all this over the top craziness and stuff.
