I don’t know maybe its just me but I don’t see the soaps always depicting women as victims. There have been plenty of strong women in soaps. Dorian Lord, Viki, Marlena,Alice Horton, and many more. They seem to show women going through some tough things but surviving. To me thats strong. I think if you want to compare how they depict women you should compare the way they depict men. Either they are greedy, womanizers, evil or killers. To me it is just entertainment and I don’t try and analyze each character. If I like the show I watch it. If something is offensive enough I will stop watching. But fortunatly for me I don’t get offended by much.

Just had a thought about your post while sitting on the front porch reading.

I think I would enjoy and respect GH more right now if they just went the way of Soap. Very over the top, offbeat and satirish.

At least it would make the show make sense — so just go all out and do it all for fun.

Talking about the soaps having a cliche of DID storylines — to me GH seems to have DID. It has multiple personalities. Just someone do an intervention and let the over the top personality win.

Soap had the mob storylines and I loved them. I would so love to see Sonny and Jason doing the over the top comedy — at least it would get rid of Jason’s stoned faced look.

  • Soap

Hello, I have a simple question : I want to know the Days ofour Lives story’s Salem serial killer. When the storlyne has finish in the USA?

  • Melanie

@Chrisann D, We were talking about the women on GH and how they have been portrayed mostly as victims throughout the years. Those other women you mentioned are from the other soaps, and yes I agree, they were very strong considering everything they have been through. I love being entertained also, but not offended.

  • Richard

The two soaps that I watch or watched as I said were GH and The Edge of Night. Both of them in times past have had many strong women who went through things and came out on top. I mentioned many of them from GH in an earlier post in this thread.

But in the last 10 years or so GH has totally went a very mysogynistic route — turning the men into domineering oafs who love to make life all about them. The world revolves around them and basically the women in their life are just there for a good poke when they choose to quit shooting up the world, or taking over another business, or any one of their manly functions.

Making Sam’s rape more about Jason is just one of the many long lines of sins marked up against GH writers in the last 10 years.

I mean they even took a strong woman like Tracy and turned her into one of Luke’s saps. There is no way the Tracy of old would have put up with being Luke’s piece on the side like she has. The old Tracy would have done a Lorena Bobbit on him. It made my stomach turn during one of Laura’s recent returns how Tracy just stepped aside and let Luke go back to her and stuff without fighting. The old Tracy would have never done that. Also she would have never put up with being married to Luke and him just coming and going whenever he wanted for months at a time. They whole thing just hurt the character.

I am like Melanie too in that I love being entertained but don’t offend me. And esp. don’t be condescening to me.

Just like I am all about the drama and stories with GH over the love stories and romances — I am also about the characters. I don’t want to sit there and see characters that I have watched for months suddenly do something that I know they would never do. I want characters to be true to themselves — not just changed to fit the latest plot the writers want to tell. That is both offensive to me and condescending.

    @ Richard

Those ginormous saucer-sized blue eyes tearing up whenever her latest scheme got uncovered…LOL… yes, Ginny was fantastic. But TPTB really needed a strong character (and actress, Judith Chapman) to replace favorite favorite vet Denise “Lesley” Alexander, who got canned after 10+ years for demanding too much money. People complain about Robin’s death, but Lesley died OFF screen and without much hoopla.

As much as I loved “Soap” and “Mary Hartman” (and the short-lived sitcoms “Filthy Rich” and “Powers That Be”), I don’t know if I want to see GH go full hog satire cartoon. I agree that Sonny, Jason and Carly are already there but I the rest of cast (well, but maybe for Kate, Olivia and Maxie) seem to be fairly well drawn and reasonably complex with histories. I would hate to see all that thrown out for laughs.

By the way, if you want to see GH parody go check out the altadave27 channel on youtube. The comedy is hit or miss, and sometimes borders on vulgar, but usually good for one or two big laughs and plenty of head-nodding.

    @ mom or melanie?

One of you was the one talking about how it would have been better to make another character suffer from DID instead of a third tier character who had been all but written out for almost a year and who no one cared about ever. I agree with that sentiment, although I can see the logic in it being Kate since the whole “living a fake life” thing certainly screamed unstable. Personally I think Liz Webber would have been a more interesting choice… long history (including bouts of mental illness), higher risk as she works in a hospital, drama over her caring for two little boys with absent fathers, drama over Jason wanting to help despite marriage problems with Sam, Heather around to exacerbate the situation, kinda dating a shrink, etc. Plus Liz has large fan and hater bases so it would lead to massive flame wars online — which I suspect TPTB drool over. It could also help explain Liz’s often questionable decisions in the past and seemingly two-heads at once personality. Just my two cents.

GH naysayers be gone! The show was very exciting last week. Couldn’t wait for the next days episode. True, the Starr actress is painfully out of her league with the talented GH actors (well, most of them. Seemed like an even match with her and mumble mouth Sonny. Wish I had a dollar for every time he says “ya know”) but the show moved along nicely. I watched OLTL during its final six months and have watched GH since OLTL went off and its my opinion the GH actors and the show in general is far superior. Not too crazy about the Manning influx but am giving it a chance.

  • John

    @ Richard

Loved EON, dude. Sharon Gabet was awesome in that show! They really knew how to write murder mystery for daytime.

  • Melanie

@sofaspud, that wasn’t me who originally brought up why they are using Kate, a character with no long term history on GH, with this DID storyline, I believe it was Ann? I think, not 100% sure. After seeing it on OLTL so much in the past couple of years, I just got tired of hearing about DID period. However, with all of the stuff Liz has been through over the years, she probably would’ve made a better choice with this s/l. Like you said, her supporters and haters would have a field day with it and oh yes, the flame wars would certainly be on fire!

@John, glad you are enjoying GH so much. I have just been reading recaps and alot of comments (good and bad) on all the soap message boards, but I personally haven’t been feeling it. Too much of the same ole, same ole for me.

  • John

They really need to out the mob stuff on the backburner and bring the action back to the goings on at the hospital. BTW where’s Monica??????????

  • Chrisann D

Just finished watching GH. It to me was the best episode I have seen since coming back to it! The scenes with Anna and Luke, John McBain and Jason, Lulu and Dante were so well written and acted! I am so glad GH has been renewed. It is becoming even better than I ever thought it could. The lighting was amazing. The acting……well loved it.It is everything I want in a show. WTG!

  • Chrisann D

I forgot the scenes with Anna and Elizabeth were so good too.

MBMom, You watch the show at night on SoapNet or online, right? I know you will apprieciate todays show. It is as good as One Life was…or really close. John McBain is in his element on GH. He makes you believe if anyone can take down the mob its him. I also hope that Anna sticks around. She brings the acting of eveeryone she has a scene with up.

  • Anne

I miss OLTL…. Started watching DOOL again because of the “original” characters were coming back and things were getting back on track — then I saw on the blogs that DOOL is going to let go of some of these characters(and may be letting go of several others later this year) that they brought back. WTH! Why do that to the fans???! It appeared that fans were starting to watch the show again. Unfortunately, I will not be watching anything on NBC daytime again.

  • Kelby

I am still watching Y&R and DOOL and DOOL is still my favorite right now. What is frustrating to me is that everyone knows the show is going to go through another reboot very soon. They just rebooted the show and now another. They brought back characters from the past that I really liked and now some of them are leaving. I hate knowing that is going to happen. Hopefully, the writing will continue to go more in the right direction. Even with this current reboot, I am not pleased with everything that I am seeing. I am glad we are off the Hope/John brainwashing bullsh.t. That was really on my nerves and entirely too far fetched. I do not want to see that on my soaps. Ever! This show has had some really good acting and truly realistic and dramatic scenes in the last few months. I give this show mad props for making the soap seem way more like the old days of soaps. You know….when they were worth a da.n! Y&R I do not know what to say. The show continues to degrade itself. Too many of the characters and stories do not make any sense. And I can not believe they are putting Sharon and Victor together. That is disgusting. This show has absolutely no couples that I like. The number one rated soap su.ks people! There is way more room for improvement with these shows. DOOL is the only soap that gets a high five from me. B&B and GH I have no opinion on. Actually, I do want to say, I do not watch B&B very often, never really have, but lately I have seen a few more episodes and the sets on that show and the exterior shots really add flavor. Way to go B&B!

Hi Chrisann, Yes I watch my soaps online and soapnet. I wanted to tell you that Loving Llanview is finally touring, and wouldn’t you know it, I am completely booked for the three dates! I have NEVER attended a soap fan event and my sister and I promised we ‘ d do this event if it came anywhere near us and we’d absolutley go to Chicago/Rosemont. I’ve gone there for years for concerts and I’m so bummed I can’t go. If you or any other OLTL fans are interested check out lovingllanview.com

I’m so intrigued I’m gonna watch GH online right now LOL. I think I’m going to start DVRing so the viewing gets counted. We’ll see.

I agree with Ann & sofaspud that the DID storyline might have had a bigger impact if a longterm character was afflicted. Liz would have been a great choice for the many reasons mentioned. But when they gave Jessica DID on OLTL they had to rewrite history and it was very controversial, because DID is almost always caused by terrible, traumatic child abuse. Most people don’t want to see that. I am curios how they explain the root of Connie/Kate’s DID.
Also, sofaspud & Richard, I loved Ginny Blake & enjoy Judith Chapman on Y&R.

I see ABC’s PR Department FINALLY released a Press Release about GH. Well, not even really GH, but Roger Howarth is doing a Twitter chat tomorrow. Not sure what that is, as I don’t Twitter. But I’m a big Roger Howarth fan. I might have to start to Twitter (Tweet?)LOL.

I’m still waiting for the ABC Press Release that GH was renewed. I’m thinking once they do the network upfronts, which I think are coming up soon, we’ll know more about GH’s status i.e. length of renewal and timeslot. Alot of assumptions floating about and until ABC officially says what’s what, not even the affilliates know what to expect, let alone the cast, crew and fans.

  • robert sprague

once again i agree the mob story line has to go on back burner .kates d.i.d has to go no one can play it like erika slezak she is brillant i really miss here and one life to like abc should admit there mistake and bring it back. but once again there is no room on gh for the one life to lve actors . wheres monica and bobbi havent seen felicia only twice heather hasnt been on in like 4 days now robin mattson is cant miss tv .so sick of jason crying about franco its not sams faultfanco raped her.grow up jason be a man just becouse you have agun doesnt make you one.gh for years has treated woman like victoms . bobbi lucy traci heather celia q these where all strong woman and gh put them back into stone age days enough gh us fans want bobbi heather felicia love to see lucy back.enough mob gh its killing you .and im still not looking forword to toodd comming to gh. its hard enough to watch john and star. new krista bad old krista good wrong move gh. give chad duell a good story line such agood actor very talentedfalling starr around just isnt doing it.

  • Chrisann D

MBMom, Saw the press release. Looks like they are doing a little bragging about GH being an award winning show. They said more cast members will be tweeting all month long. Mp Twitter account here either. At least they(ABC) are making some kind of an effort to promote the show. Seems like some progress. I am looking forward to watching GH tomorrow with Todd coming back on. I hope that it plays well. I have always been a Roger H. fan even more so than Trevor as Todd.

  • Richard

Well I am glad some of you are enjoying GH. I still don’t miss it and doubt I ever will. Just read the latest set of spoilers posted at SON. Once again the majority of the spoilers have to do with Jason or characters I don’t even know who they are. Who in the world are Todd and Tea?

The funniest one I read involved Jason accidently walking into a Lamaze session. How in the world do you accidentally walk into a Lamaze session?

Anyway I am sitting here watching the latest episode of The Client List. This is true real soap opera. If daytime would stop and take the time to write stories like this and develop characters like this then the shows might not be in danger. The Client List is making Lifetime a network to be reckoned with again and setting rating records. It’s already been renewed.

This is what a strong woman is all about. This woman is abandoned by her husband and she goes out the only way she knows how and gets the money she needs to pay the mortgage, take care of her kids, etc. There is the mystery of why her husband left her, etc. It is a true dramatic story with some comedy thrown in. And all the characters are great. There is not one that I don’t like or do not understand what their purpose is in the story.

I usually don’t like shows like this. And you wouldn’t even think it would appeal to a man. I first just tuned in to see Jennifer Love Hewitt and I’ll admit to see if there was any sex, etc. But the story drew me in as well as the characters. I can’t miss it. It is one of the few shows with commercials each week that I have to see. The other ones (when they are on) are The Closer, Mad Men, The Killing, Breaking Bad, American Horror Story, Rizzoli & Isles and Franklin & Bash.

  • MBmomof3

Chrisann, I agree that it was a good press release and at least they are promoting GH. GH was so good today & yesterday with the Alexis/Tracy sceene.
