'The Dhamma Brothers' Airs on OWN Sunday, May 6
via press release:
Los Angeles, CA] – OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network will air the internationally acclaimed documentary The Dhamma Brothers on “Super Soul Sunday” May 6, at 11am ET/10 (check local listings).
The Dhamma Brothers tells the story of Alabama’s most dangerous prisoners and their journey to self-discovery through the ancient practice of meditation. East meets west in the Deep South at Donaldson Correctional Facility, an over-crowded maximum security prison, where groups of inmates are the first to take part in an extended Vipassana retreat. During this emotionally and physically demanding course of silent meditation that lasts ten days, a spark was ignited in a place that instead of breeding violence leads to social and emotional transformation.
Directed by Jenny Phillips –a practicing psychotherapist and cultural anthropologist– the documentary has the ability to demolish stereotypes of imprisoned men and challenge the beliefs that we should punish rather than rehabilitate the incarcerated. “The Dhamma Brothers shines a spotlight inside America’s prisons, showing a group of inmates who, when offered a deep and clinically effective treatment program, emerge with a collective sense of peace and purpose. I am thrilled that this message will reach a new level of awareness on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.” said Jenny Phillips.
Also paired with the documentary is a rare interview where Oprah Winfrey sits down with Buddhist monk, author and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, Thich Nhat Hanh in “Oprah and Thich Nhat Hanh: Living Mindfully”. Thich Nhat Hanh shares with Oprah if he’s ever have any regrets about the path he chose, how to meditate and how to relate in love and compassion with your life partner.
