lol these debates. there is NO revenge vs. scandal. revenge is 100% getting renewed. BUT revenge also had a 6.1 lead-in, a summer of incessant promotion, and a fall premiere. scandal premiered in a dead spring, got promoted while most shows were tumbling down or in repeats, and began after a 2.8 series low for grey’s.

and wasting the grey’s lead-in!? there is nothing that should’ve been put there instead! the new shows either failed or succeeded. PP is doing the same numbers on a new night. and grey’s is helping a show that would’ve been dead elsewhere. as for GCB, idk on what planet a serious show like grey’s would be a good fit for an over-the-top comedy like GCB, esp. over DH when GCB was described as “DH in the south” and only began with 0.3 lower than it. there is no perfectly compatible show for scandal, but grey’s is the closest because of the shonda rhimes and her style of writing connection.

the only ABC battle is GCB v. scandal. but both should be renewed. scandal has held on to the demo crazily, while GCB has managed to not die without a lead-in. they both have their fans and potential for growth since they haven’t been declining every week like pan am, the river, etc. it would be a shame if one didn’t get a second shot in the fall. but between the two, scandal still wins. after 4 weeks of beating GCB (yes, that had no lead-in, but still), it finally dropped 0.1 and equaled this week’s GCB. and GCB actually increased for the 2nd episode and then went back down to new lows. scandal just dropped a damn tenth after 4 weeks of having its premiere numbers on lock.

long story short: hope both GCB and scandal get renewed! come on ABC!

also, the secret circle should go. it’s gone from a 1.5 to a 0.5 despite the best lead-in and tons of fancy, showy promos.

    @ Justin121,

I think it depends on the Network. Fox, for example, has been more heavily behind dramas than comedies for awhile. They’re fortunate that they have geared up their comedy development, as so many of their dramas of late have been failing.

  • Rachel

Okay, how about this: Lead-ins are important at the beginning. They are essential to help launch a show which is why we rarely see new shows on before already established ones. The lead-in can only do so much then it’s up to the viewers to decide whether or not they like what they see and they wanna stick around and follow it to whichever time-slot it ends up in. TVD helped the TSC in the beginning but TSC has failed. It couldn’t attract that audience like the network wanted.

And whenever I say something is failing or doing bad, I don’t want you or anyone taking it as an opinion of quality. I never talk about a failure in ratings as a failure in quality. There are plenty of good shows that are commercial failures. But to argue that a failure is not a failure because the reason behind the failures is different… Cancellation isn’t biased. If you’re axed because of ratings, you’re axed because of ratings. The reason why becomes irrelevant because you are still axed. And if they are that concerned about Nikita, they should pitch it to another Network. But I don’t know if they will because the ratings are so bad, no one probably wants to touch it.

Fair enough. Doesn’t change the fact that (IMO) Nikita would’ve been better suited for a different network from the get go. I’m not gonna sit here and say Nikita failed because the ratings were crap and that’s it. There’s a reason for everything no matter how irrelevant you think it may be.

Scandal down 0.2? How the frack is that possible? God that is crazy. Good to see Grey’s go up though.

  • Kavyn

Great comment AO, I can’t really counter it – it makes a lot of sense. Thank you for your insight :)

I don’t understand the appeal of TBBT. It’s just an average sitcom

  • Petar

    @Squee who just said:
totally don’t think CBS would move TBBT to 8:30

But now all BBT lead-in is waste and if can make stonger two dramas after him why not?(which is two hours programing no matter PoI&TM or POI&H5O)

Here best POI ep when was known and was after TBBT rerun:

    The Big Bang Theory (R) 4.0 12.87
    Person Of Interest 3.4 15.78

If POI is with this % “retention” and after original TBBT eprsodes will be bigger beast than NCIS!

I don’t think anything is irrelevant. What I’m saying is that things become irrelevant once as decision has been made, unless the decision is reversed. And I don’t think the quality argument holds on this site in particular because TV By The Numbers doesn’t rate shows by quality, it rates shows by viewership numbers.

Seeing THE SECRET CIRCLE airing after THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and still getting a 0.5 is ridiculous lol

Now I’m sure NIKITA is being renewed because I think THE SECRET CIRCLE would be the only option to replace it on Fridays (I doubt the CW would risk and put a newbie in a Friday timeslot). But now that it is getting 0.5’s in the best timeslot, I doubt it’s being renewed for a second season. It wouldn’t survive in any other timeslot.

    @ Bookworm,

The attitude may seem radical to your expectations, but there have been plenty of much harsher reactions to shows in the past. Examples include Chuck and Fringe. And it’s worth keeping in mind that none of the opinions expressed here will have any bearing on whether or not a show is renewed or not. People can express their personal feelings, but those don’t matter. In my case, I’d say that she’s not “good”, because I’ve always found her programs to be “bad”. But like I said, my opinion doesn’t matter either. As for the 4 shows, some people really are “childish”, and I’d advise you to avoid taking them seriously. Though it is a legitimate concern in that ABC could have a particular problem if she were to suddenly lose fans. That possibility is unlikely, but so was Charlie Sheen’s meltdown. It may be low risk to air 4 of her shows, but it’s not no risk.

Comparisons may seem unreasonable, but the bottom line is ratings. There may be reasons why PP has higher ratings, but if ABC renews Scandal it has to be entirely, or at least largely, based on the fact that it will be guessed that it can do better than it’s Network competition. Once Upon A Time is a hit and nothing else matters there. Revenge has, for most of the Season, done pretty well. It also has been behind Happy Endings and Apt 23, for those who look to lead-ins. Also of importance to the show, it is the first drama in quite a few years that hasn’t embarrassed ABC in that slot. When show after show fails for years, the first one that doesn’t fail gets a little extra credit. Scandal isn’t really competing with those, or with other Spring replacements. Replacements may be looked at a little differently, but they’re all competing for the same schedule spots next Season. The bigger competition is the likes of GCB and Body of Proof.

Some people here *are* bitter. Some people hate just for the sake of it. As I said, my advice is to give those sort all of the respect and attention that they deserve. Scandal has maintained, which is much better than dropping. There are arguments for and against it, and we’ll see how ABC views it soon enough. Even if they do like it, the real question is whether or not they like it enough to keep it. As far as Happy Endings goes, then ime comedies and dramas are evaluated differently, so I don’t know how much value there is in comparing them to each other.

  • Bette

My two favs for Thusday nite are Vampire Diaries and Person of Interest.
Last Night I thought POI was the best TV has to offer,it was great.

  • AO

You’re welcome Kavyn. Thanks for the compliment.

  • Networkman

If I had to rank ABC’s 10pm dramas from most likely to be renewed to cancellation I would do it in this order.

    1. Castle
    2. Revenge
    3. Private Practice
    4. Scandal
    5. Body of Proof-IMO, only chance for survival,ABC tries a drama on Friday
    6. GCB
    7. Pan Am

A lot of racist here are rooting for Scandal to fail.Does her success burn at your core.Your true colors are showing.Go Scandal.I love Revenge but sorry Scandal is better.

  • Lena

You really feel it is necessary to attack Washington’s appearance? She is a beautiful woman, but I am convinced other factors are bothering you on that particular issue. LOL

  • SJ

LOL @ Scandal. Cancel this disaster, ABC, and renew GCB and give Private Practice a 22-episode farewell season.

  • Networkman

Person of Interest should stay @9pm Thursday next season. I do feel that its numbers are going to get stronger and then that will help a new drama @10pm such as Elementary. The Mentalist has already finished 4 seasons and is ready for syndication. I think the network should use the show to help Friday night. If it garners 2.5 now I think with originals on Friday it should get at least a 2.1. CBS has to make decisions to improve the network as a whole not just worry about one particular show decreasing in ratings. The Mentalist should do better than CSI:NY which I feel will be cancelled. This also may actually help The Mentalist last longer cause it will be the strongest show on Friday.

  • SJ

GCB is more likely to be renewed than Body of Proof. Also, why is Pan Am on your list? It has been canceled.

  • Tammy

I wonder if all this anti-Scandal bias…is because the show features a black lead character…Cause honestly it is one of the best shows I have watched for in a long time, and I am not a fan of primetime soaps…

  • AO

Almost every show (outside of the news programs) has bias against them. I haven’t seen any evidence that Scandal is being treated especially badly. It’s possible that one or two people are discriminating due to race, but more likely that the show is being hated on in the exact same way that all shows are hated on.
