'Community' Renewed by NBC for a Fourth Season

NBC has renewed Community for 13 episodes.  The renewal itself should come as no surprise, but I confess the episode order does surprise me a little bit.  Community needed 17 episodes to get to 88 episodes, generally considered to be the minimum acceptable for Mon-Fri stripped syndication, but perhaps like "88 is the new 100," "84 has become the new 88."

Note: unlike the renewal of 30 Rock, this renewal is not being spun as a final season, so it's possible Community can still get to 88 episodes and beyond.

How do you know Big Bang Theory will stay at 8pm?

  • Eric

Show is mediocre at best. Joel McHale is especially awful. I watch the Office and then hit the DVR for rest of Thursday nights. Wish they would cancel 30 Rock, & Community TODAY and put something new on.

Yeah…given that the strength of the new shows that NBC has been putting on (Whitney, Chelsea, that abomination starring Hank Azaria) is pretty much nonexistent past Up All Night (also fighting the ‘bear’), it makes sense to keep Community on for at least 1/2 a season.

I give NBC credit though, they’ve been trying a lot of things while not giving up on their modest hits. With 30 Rock ending it certainly looks better for The Office, Parks and Rec, and Community. I just can’t see them wanting to hit the reset button on their entire Thursday lineup…even though switching to a Reality or Drama format would probably give them a better shot at winning the night back…

PLEASE MOVE IT AWAY FROM BIG BANG THEORY!!!
but a season 4 is good enough.

Overjoyed that Community is coming back but I think we’re not mentioning something…

My DVR has not one but THREE new Community episodes next Thursday, at 8, 9, and the season finale at 9:30. If that’s true that’s great in itself BUT…

Perhaps an audition for a different time slot next season? (and get away from the 8PM TBBT death trap?)

“Show is mediocre at best. Joel McHale is especially awful. I watch the Office and then hit the DVR for rest of Thursday nights.”

You call Community a mediocre show at best while you STILL watch The Office. This season of The Office was downright terrible. This season of Community ran laps around The Office. I probably chuckle two or three times all season.

I didn’t read through the earlier comments, so perhaps I’m being a little redundant.

    With that said,
I think the 13 episode only renewal is simply NBC hedging its bet a little against

    1) Community totally crashing next season (even by NBC standards)
    and/or
    2) A number of unexpected comedy hits on the network next season (sort of like ABC this season)

If the latter occurs then they can ease it off the air at 84 episodes and still have a ‘close enough’ number for syndication.

If the latter doesn’t occur (which would not be surprising judging by the synopsis I’ve read of the shows), then they will probably find sufficient reason to giving Community a “final 9 episodes” so they can ‘wrap up the show’ since Community will most likely move along at somewhere between 1.4 and 1.8 next year

i don’t think parks and rec will end next year. but the more interesting question is will the office end on its 200th episode(as far as i know the only other show to do that was 70s show) it would be cool if it did.

I hear that Community has a back order of 9 episodes. So maybe when the show gets good numbers in the Fall and some of the newer comedies fail, NBC could pick up that back 9 order

  • Flame

@Pete: Just assuming that both shows will keep their slot.

  • Nadine Harris

Amazing. Why would they do that?

  • Nancy

Maybe they’re trying to be like USA network. Give some shows 13 episodes so they can try out other shows for 13 episodes that way they get more variety. then again I don’t really know. I just know that USA shows are usually 13 or 16 episodes at a time. Sometimes only 9 episodes.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 WE’RE ALMOST THERE, HUMAN BEINGS!

  • Gunnerygal

Yay! Some goodish news…..Community is a fan favorite but more than 13 episodes would be nice.

  • Donnie

    Cool. Cool. Cool. Cool.

The bottom line was money. NBC refuses to pony up the cash for 17 on any of their shows which is why every comedy got the 13 episodes next season.

As for the Friday night move—this is stupid. Most TV watchers know that Friday is the end of the line for most shows (see Chuck, just to name one), and to throw Whitney in behind it says a lot about NBC. I don’t even think with Grimm staying on Friday nights will help the show or the ratings. Sad, Sad, Sad

“I watch the Office and then hit the DVR for rest of Thursday nights. Wish they would cancel 30 Rock, & Community TODAY and put something new on”

Same here. A bad episode of The Office is still better than a “good” episode of the other weak offerings. What was once ‘Must See TV” has fallen terribly into the ‘Who Cares?’ pile, which is too bad for the once-mighty NBC.
