NEW YORK – May 9, 2012 – Syfy’s new hit series Total Blackout, hosted by Jaleel White (Family Matters, Dancing with the Stars) shattered series records in total viewers (1.4 million), Adults 18-49 (770,000) and Adults 25-54 (799,000) during its Wednesday, May 9 telecast at 10PM (ET/PT).

Total Blackout is a half-hour, extreme game show in which contestants battle each other and their fears in a series of challenges. However, all the challenges are played in complete darkness. There are no lights, no blindfolds and no-holds barred as the players face their anxieties and unexpected surprises in a series of nerve-wracking games.

The international hit series is produced by FremantleMedia North America (American Idol, The X Factor) and was created by Henrik Nielsen (Can You Duet?, Danish versions of The X Factor, Got Talent and Pop Idol).  Nielsen and Jeff Apploff (Million Dollar Money Drop, Don’t Forget the Lyrics) serve as executive producers.  Jack Martin (Who’s Still Standing, Deal or No Deal) is co-executive producer.

Syfy is a media destination for imagination-based entertainment. With year round acclaimed original series, events, blockbuster movies, classic science fiction and fantasy programming, a dynamic Web site (, and a portfolio of adjacent business (Syfy Ventures), Syfy is a passport to limitless possibilities. Originally launched in 1992 as SCI FI Channel, and currently in more than 98 million homes, Syfy is a network of NBCUniversal, one of the world's leading media and entertainment companies. (Syfy. Glad to see Syfy issue a press release. One of the best reality series currently on the air!

  • Jadine

I’m the opposite.. I watched this last night for the first time and I thought it was horrible.. Probably the most ridiculous reality show in some time..

  • Bran

So this means we will get more ridiculous reality shows and fewer and fewer original “sci fiction” programming on syfy until the channel has wrestling and reality 24/7. great.

  • Rangefinder

You’re an idiot. No cable network can afford to produce scripted programming for every night of the week. Yeah, Syfy is showing more reality TV than ever before… but also more scripted shows than ever before. And the amount of wrestling has not changed since it was introduced in 2006.

  • The End

He’s probably a disgruntled Stargate Universe fan that doesn’t understand the show was very expensive, infact the most expensive show on the network in a long while, which failed on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and was cancelled with under a million viewers.

For a show with a higher budget than The Walking Dead, the network apparently hates Science Fiction for cancelling this failed series.

Worst press release ever-shatters records compared to what, exactly?

It’s unbelievable to me the absolute crap that networks are putting on as entertainment!! They’ve run the gamut of putting a bunch of single mostly undressed or under dressed young people under the same roof with booze, no boundaries, little morals & a swimming pool to jump into while naked & drunk. Add a crap load of bad behavior and bam! you’ve got a show! Then we’ve got every east coast person of Italian descent (and not the good kind of Italians, the sleazy, “whattcha doin’ with my bitch” kind of Italians with their low class, slutty, filthy, foul mouthed, fighting female counterparts to let our children watch. Great role models!
Now we have a show based on blindness & people making complete fools of themselves, squealing like little girls because they can’t see the filthy rodents being dumped on their heads, who wouldn’t? I am hoping that the Association For the Blind drops a huge complaint in the laps of the producers. Blind people need compassion not ridicule from some cheesy “reality” program that makes blindness look like a 3 stooges movie!

Come on Mr. Jack, it’s perfectly clear, it “shattered series records in total viewer” meaning it had more viewers than anytime in the history of the series, which I think is like three weeks.

  • Mr. Jack

LOL – my “ignorance” embarrasses me! Three weeks – that’s historic!!

  • Gunnerygal

I stumbled on this show by word of mouth. Sister told me it was a must watch to get a good laugh and my facebook feed was littered with post about it, by people from different walks of life mind you. I was beyond impressed!! Short, HILARIOUSLY GRATIFYING and yet not too trashy by the “reality show” standards.

  • Ben Roto

It is a one hour show not, a half hour.

  • SyFy Fan

For them to show this program over one of the more Science fiction programs of the past like say Friday the 12th the series is atrocious

  • SciFi fan

Really disappointing, Syfy should really take a hint and start being about scifi again.

Too bad stupidity reigns supreme, and pulls in more theoretical viewers.
