ABC's Body of Proof turned out to be my biggest prediction miss this season. The only "certain to be canceled" predicted show that was renewed. I'm still not quite sure how it got renewed, and may never know for certain. Looks like its 13 episode order for next season will be used as a schedule filler, likely for a failed rookie drama, or a mid-season replacement.

Other than that I predicted the fate of every other ABC show correctly in the final guesses this season, most long ago.

With that the Index bids the 2011-12 ABC season adieu, there will be no more ABC Renew / Cancel posts until September. Happy summer, ABC!

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I hated both GCB and Missing is going be cancell, still keep shows like DWTS and The Bachelorette on the air.

  • JC

I dont know that I would even call BoP a “prediction fail”. Maybe just a premature prediction. I am a fan of the show but I expected it to be cancelled. Renewing it just means it will get the “V” treatment where it is renewed unexpectedly and then killed that season. Too bad too. 35 years ago I loved Quincy (was just a child then) and today I love the female version.

Not a terrible year for abc…. once upon a time is the biggest drama sucess of the season and revenge has also done very well in it’s slot, shame that pan am failed had high hopes for it, disopointed about GCB aswell i really think that could have of been a hit if abc schdueled it better but oh well hopefully next season’s offerings like 666PA and Nashville will have the same sucess as OUAT and Revenge

  • JC

@dinah – I liked both shows myself, but even I will admit that GCB was acting like a show asking to be cancelled over the last couple of episodes.

  • Barry

I could take GCB, V, the Playboy Club and other cancelled ABC shows and have quite the lineup on a cable station!

  • Ryan

I’m really glad they renewed BoP, but you guys are probably right, it’ll just be filler and then cancelled next year :/
Hey Bill, do you think there’s any chance ABC renewed it because of it’s stronger performance after being paired with Dancing with the Stars? Either way, that still doesn’t bode well if it’s lead-in dependent…

  • Harris

God, I love Once Upon A Time. I can’t wait for next year.

  • Bill Gorman

“Hey Bill, do you think there’s any chance ABC renewed it because of it’s stronger performance after being paired with Dancing with the Stars? “

    Certainly possible.

The fact that it was given a 13 episode, as yet unscheduled, order for next season isn’t particularly positive, but it’s better than cancellation!

  • Lisa

Loved GCB, I guess I’m a true southerner at heart. Annie Potts is great in anything she does. Sorry to see it go.

  • psychic

Yeah, well, The River and Missing were practically miniseries anyway. I never expected either to be renewed. It seems that shows like that roll around once every year, get cancelled and then are forgotten.

  • Tom

The schedule heavily suggests BoP was picked up only as procedural insurance spackle.

Given that Touch seems to have had the same treatment, maybe we need to fudge the numbers when it is the only procedural not assured a spot on the schedule.

  • JC

@ Barry – pretty much anything NBC has cancelled. Prime Suspect, Chase (loved Chase), Playboy Club, The Event, The Cape, Knight Rider, and Bionic Woman, and oh hell add Harry’s Law and we could make a fortune with a cable channel. Add in Pan Am, GCB, and Missing and we have a serious hit network.

  • CrimTV

I love it how DH was the fourth highest on the list :)

  • Anthony Parello (AP076)

I can’t even begin to count how many of of FB friends have posted links to petitions calling for the renewal of GCB. I have stopped letting them know about the futility of such efforts as the responses what about Jericho (and Designing Women ??????) are laughable.

  • Fake Me Out

    @Bill Gorman

The fact that it was given a 13 episode, as yet unscheduled, order for next season isn’t particularly positive, but it’s better than cancellation!

Maybe they figure as spackle goes it’s not too bad? As an emergency filler if it can get 2.0 +/- they could keep it around for a few years @ 13/yr and backdoor their way to the holy land of 88 eps.

Help save Endgame and watch season 1 on Hulu, also watch Craig Ferguson in Scotland this week

  • TomSFBay

I think there’s just a minor flaw in your analysis which caused this, though from a quantitative perspective, there really isn’t much you can do about it until a show concludes its season. Even then, you really could only change a certainty to a toss up.

The thing is, while GCB has a much higher season average than BoP, if you look at their final 3 airings, GCB was far lower than its season average, while BoP was far higher than its average.

While we may never know, I believe that is the reason. One goes out on the upswing, while the other goes out with a whimper. And, considering the declines this spring among all shows overall, the fact that BoP did so well after DWTS returned in the spring must have swayed their decision.

  • TomSFBay

“the fact that BoP did so well after DWTS”

    **relatively speaking, that is.

  • Anthony Parello (AP076)

But would any cable channel be able to sustain those shows at anything approximating the cost of those shows without seriously cutting back on the things that their fans like about them?

  • JC

@ Anthony Parello (AP076), oh probably not, but on paper it sounded really good.

  • Anthony Parello (AP076)

    Agreed :-)
