ABC's Body Of Proof turned out to be my biggest prediction miss this season. The only "certain to be canceled" predicted show that was renewed. I'm still not quite sure how it got renewed, and may never know for certain. Looks like its 13 episode order for next season will be used as a schedule filler, likely for a failed rookie drama, or a mid-season replacement.

Other than that I predicted the fate of every other ABC show correctly in the final guesses this season, most long ago.

With that the Index bids the 2011-12 ABC season adieu, there will be no more ABC Renew / Cancel posts until September. Happy summer, ABC!

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did ABC's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I am also surprised, though not shocked, by the “Body of Proof” renewal. I think in this case, it is a perfect counter-example to your “Harry’s Law” cancellation rationale over at NBC. BoP sucks royally in the demo, but it is one of ABC’s highest total-viewer shows in terms of scripted series, so I think ABC gambled and decided to pull a CBS in terms of keeping around an older-skewing series that often rates in the top 25 despite its crappy demo. Dana Delaney is also an ABC pet, for whatever reason (insert your dirty, insidious ideas here) ;) The show also fits in with ABC’s female-skewing audience. Of course, I would still have much preferred that ABC had kept “V” around as mid-season filler instead since it was more unique, a rare male demo success for ABC, and performed better in the demo than BoP, but such is life. The final reason “Body of Proof” was probably renewed is because ABC owns and produces it in-house, thus more syndication money if it happens to pull a “Castle” next year and go up in the ratings?! Time will tell…

Wow! I can’t believe GCB, The River will be cancelled. Very poor judgement, to whom that took the responsibility to cancel these shows.I think they should take a break from stupid realty shows.

  • Ravenrei

To those who think the accents on GCB were terrible:

As a native Texan who has lived in multiple parts of this vast state and studied the dialects of Texan English, I can tell you most people were spot on with their accents on this show. The trouble is that not everybody was using the *same* accent, which throws people off. In a place like Dallas, you can get people who go in for the giant twang and others who want to sound as ‘standard American’ as newscasters. I found them to be socially accurate for the most part.

  • O.S.

Why is it that good shows are always cancelled? GCB (loved Annie Potts) and Missing were very good shows and in Canada we watched them faithfully. Anything good that comes along gets cancelled. GCB was full of great laughs, feisty women. Loved Texas! Missing was original, had good dialog, beautiful cities in europe. Why do executives only see the ratings and nothing else. Cancel shows like Survial, Bachelor, and Bachelorettes. They are horrible shows and suck. The ordinary people who watch TV shows should be the judge of the shows not the executives.

Cancelling low rated shows is poor judgement? Seriously?

THE MIDDLE – 1 (-3) I love the Middle, but it’s been slipping in quality lately.
    ONCE UPON A TIME – 24 (+3)
    MODERN FAMILY – 42

I watched the Castle finale last night before I went to sleep. Bad idea. IT WAS AWESOME!! :-) :-D

  • Nick

Scratch that above, I hadn’t reloaded.
    THE MIDDLE – 7 (-3)
    ONCE UPON A TIME – 21 (+3)
    MODERN FAMILY – 39

Oh, and watching Castle before I went to sleep was a bad idea ’cause I was up for like an hour just thinking about it. :-D

  • Rebecca

    @Nick
I loved that finale so much I watched it twice.

    @fans of GCB
I really loved it, too. It’s too bad it’s gone. At least a few of the actresses were using their natural southern accents (maybe amped up a bit in some cases). The actress who played Cricket (my fave on the show besides Annie Potts) is from Minnesota, but Annie Potts is from Kentucky, Kristin Chenoweth is from Oklahoma, and Jennifer Aspen is from Virginia (I remember she had an accent on “Rodney” where she played his wife). And accents can vary all over the south, even in Dallas, like @Ravenrei said above.

  • Seegirl

Listen here GCB was my family’s and friends favorite show u don’t know how many people watch it

  • Jim Sells

SO glad GCB is gone. Now, if they’ll just throw in Private Practice …

  • Alyssa

I love Pan Am sooooo much. I am gonna miss it dearly

    MODERN FAMILY – 39

This is a long one from CT this week but I loved it. They know how to make fun of their show (title cards and all). Quote from 3.13:
Jules: These pictures skip from Labor Day to New Year’s. How did we miss Thanksgiving?
Laurie: Remember our schedules got all mixed up? We all went away and none of us really knew when we were coming back?
Jules: Guess what? Tomorrow we celebrate Thanksgiving.
Laurie: Or, we celebrate Thanksgiving in the fall?
Jules: What if we’re not around next fall? What if a new group comes in and replaces us?
    Laurie/Ellie: No/oh…
Jules: Everybody’s gonna be like, “What happened to the cul de sac crew? I miss them. Who are these new people? They’re not so good.”
Ellie: Nope. [followed by that night's Title Card that says: "Are we still on TV?"]

i LOVED “Good Christian BITCHES” and am sorry to see it go!! these feminist & religious groups need to get over themselves. they dont want a show like GCB but have no prob watching jersey shore, dhw… the list goes on. and their views/actions on GCB show how hypocritical christians- more importantly the human race is!
ABC get some cahonas and BRING IT BACK! BRING IT BACK! BRING IT BACK!
    God bless yall now xo

  • shannon

I am really upset that pan am and GCB are being canceled both those shows were great and I was really looking forward to the next season. Every person I know watches those two shows. Someone needs to do something! This is not fair to our female viewers!

  • Kate

Can someone please explain (or point me in the direction of an explanation) of the +/- points thing that’s going on in here? I’ve watched it for a couple of weeks, but I haven’t been able to figure out how it works. When Castle got to 100 and was no longer included, I really realized I didn’t have a clue! Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

  • tvfreak

@Kate: It’s the Elimination Game, still in progress here and on the Fox thread. (NBC’s winner, Community, was declared a few days ago, and the CBS game ended today with Person of Interest the winner.) The object is to vote on your favorite and least favorite shows, +3 and -3 until one show is left. Making 100 points puts a show in the Victors’ Village (as happened to Castle, and also Fringe on the Fox game), where it will be put aside until all but one other show is eliminated. These will then be reset to 10 points to compete in the Winners’ Circle (votes +1 and -1 only), and decide the Ultimate Winner. (NOTE: Making the Victors’ Village does not guarantee the show will be the Ultimate Winner; The Big Bang Theory made the 100-point mark but did not win the game in the end.) After you vote, wait at least 24 hours before voting again. And feel free to incorporate snappy or funny quotes (from shows on the relevant network) with your votes. Enjoy! :D

  • Female Viewer

Really sad to see Missing canceled. I guess we couldn’t have too many strong female roles in one network. Missing, Body of Proof and Scandal.

“It’s a fragile ecosystem you’re messing with! (as Mike is about to respond, he holds up his finger in a “wait one second” gesture before doing his trademark whisper) Ecosystem!”
