ABC's Body Of Proof turned out to be my biggest prediction miss this season. The only "certain to be canceled" predicted show that was renewed. I'm still not quite sure how it got renewed, and may never know for certain. Looks like its 13 episode order for next season will be used as a schedule filler, likely for a failed rookie drama, or a mid-season replacement.

Other than that I predicted the fate of every other ABC show correctly in the final guesses this season, most long ago.

With that the Index bids the 2011-12 ABC season adieu, there will be no more ABC Renew / Cancel posts until September. Happy summer, ABC!

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did ABC's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Yay :-) i got it right :-D

  • Holly Euverard

ABC really needs to keep good shows like Missing. It was an awesome show that reminded me of “24″. Abc really didnt give it a chance placing it opposite American Idol. If it had been on a different night I think it would have better following. I didnt know about it until someone told me about it and then I was hooked.
    BOOO ABC!!!

  • Patti

I loved Missing and I will miss it. But, I think they should have kept it a mini-series and just ended it with the family together. The show reminded me of 24. Viewers can’t handle strong women on TV. Just my observation. What other shows are out there with such a strong female lead?

  • James

Totally irritates at the cancellations this season! GCB, The River, Awake, Pan Am, The Playboy Club, and numerous others were great shows! Idiots!!!

  • James

You want to get rid of something? Get rid of American Idol, and all these dating/fake love reality shows!!! The X-Factor and The Voice put AI to shame!!!

  • Rebecca

Didn’t get to vote last night so now I’m back to morning vote times.

    CASTLE – 14 (+1)
    MODERN FAMILY – 6 (-1)

    quote from CT [2.12]:
Laurie: We can read each other’s text messages! [reading Jules' phone] “Dear Jules, you’re awesome. Love, Jules”? Seriously?
Jules: Sometimes I text myself a little pick me up.
Laurie: “Dear Jules, you’re not so special.”
Jules: Sometimes I go the other way.

  • Melissa

I am really disappointed that Missing was cancelled. It was one of the best new shows in awhile. I want to know what happens.

  • Pat’s Chat

I can not believe that Missing is being Cancelled, that is the MOST EXCITING SHOW, since 24, ALIAS, it has the caliber of a number one HIT SHOW!!! Too Bad it didn’t get the viewing that it should of. This was soo intriguing, it was really nice to see Hollywood get it right for a change, without the SEX, the finale show was RIGHT ON IT!!!. SIGNING OFF ANOTHER DISPOINTED VIEWER!!! Well at least I still have PERSON OF INTEREST.

  • fluffy

can’t believe abc is cancelling two of the best shows missing and gcb and keeping the other shows , maybe it is the executives at abc that should be cancelled cause it is very obvious that they don’t know good television ,hope they change their minds and bring these 2 back ,

  • Pat’s Chat

THE VOICE, WHAT’S UP WITH THE MENTORS( CHRISTINA ) MAKING DIRECT DEROGATORY REMARKS, ABOUT THE CONTESTANTS. I THINK A PERSON IN HER POSITION, WHO HAS MADE IT, SHOULD NOT THINK SHE CAN JUST VOICE, OR SAY THINGS HURTFUL ABOUT THE CONTESTANTS SIMPLY, BECAUSE AS SHE STATES, SHE IS KEEPING REAL!!!. I JUST WANTED TO SAY, THAT IN FRONT OF THEIR FAMILY, CHILDREN, IT REALLY MADE ME RESOLVE NOT WANT TO WATCH THE SHOW AGAIN. THAT WAS BADLY DONE, CHRISTINA YOU CAN KEEP REAL, AND POSITIVE AT THE SAME TIME.

    CASTLE – 15 (+1)
    MODERN FAMILY – 5 (-1)

From Missing episode 1.10 “Rain On The Evil And On The Good” -
Paul: How’d you bribe a gun in here?
Dax: I told them I’d use it to kill you.
(What a shame this show had to bite it. And especially after a cheap sequel hook right after the main storyline got resolved. Really?)

  • Nick

    CASTLE – 14 (-1)
    MODERN FAMILY – 6 (+1)

“You’re just a tiny bit… loud.” “Loud?” “Not all the time. Only when you, you know, talk.”
-Jay and Gloria, MF episode 3.23, “Tableau Vivant”

  • Nick

    @Patti
Ever heard of Revenge, Scandal, Once Upon a Time, Body of Proof, and Nikita? All hit shows with tough ladies as leads. The reason Missing didn’t work was two things:

    A. The “find her son” storyline couldn’t go on forever, so it wouldn’t be something people wanted to get into long-term.
    B. Two words: DEATH SLOT. No ABC show has been a hit on Thursdays at 8 pm in decades. (Life on Mars, Ugly Betty, Charlie’s Angels, anyone?)

  • Nick

^ Add Bones, The Good Wife, and Castle to that list.

  • tvfreak

    CASTLE – 15 (+1)
    MODERN FAMILY – 5 (-1)

From Life On Mars episode 1.07 “The Man Who Sold The World” -
Sam: You’re missing the point. Maybe this is the reason why I’m here. To figure out what happened to my family…and to prevent my father from leaving.
Annie: Are you saying that that filthy kidnapper is your father?
Sam: That’s exactly what I’m saying…Happy Birthday to me.

  • Rebecca

Late again (I have family visiting).

    CASTLE – 16 (+1)
    MODERN FAMILY – 4 (-1)

    quote from CT [2.5]:
Ellie: I hate documentaries. They’re too preachy, and you can’t clap when someone dies ’cause it’s real.

  • Rebecca

So, did she find her son [alive or otherwise] on Missing? I never watched the show, so I just wondered.

  • Clovis Ledbetter

Just shows what this world has come to. They kept the junk and got rid of the good stuff. ABC is about ridiculous anyway.

  • tvfreak

@Rebecca: Yes, Becca found Michael and Oksana, the young Eastern European human trafficking victim who became his girlfriend. But then, right at the end, she gets into a car, looks at the passenger (whom the viewer doesn’t see – my dad and I have theorized it’s Giancarlo, the Italian Interpol agent and Becca’s ex-lover, last seen early in episode 9 being shot by a traitorous CIA agent who bears a strange resemblance to the B— in Apartment 23 :) ), and then the car crashes right before everyone’s eyes, totally empty except for some splotchy spots of blood on the driver’s seat. The series closed out with Michael yelling “MOM!!!!!!!!” at the top of his lungs, and it seemed like they were intending to do a second season where Becca was missing instead. Too bad, because other than the last five minutes it would have been a full and complete miniseries story all by itself.

Now I’m really hoping that Last Resort breaks the ABC Thursdays at 8 curse! Not holding out too much hope, what with X Factor/Idol and TBBT/2.5 Men to compete against, but Last Resort looks awesome and I would love to see it turn the tide against at least the former of those behemoths.

  • Rebecca

    @tvfreak
Sounds like an exciting ending. Maybe Missing and other dramas should have aired later than 8 pm. I don’t know about what would have to move in the schedule, but it seemed like there were several dramas that could have done better at 9 or 10 than where they were. Speaking as someone who watches mostly comedies.
