Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2011-12 season in May, 2012. (includes results from January 2- May 13, 2012):

Two And A Half Men renewed 1.39
Big Bang Theory renewed 1.74

I knew one of the CSI offspring would get canned, but I admitted not really being able to pick which one since the decision was likely driven by syndication economics that are hidden to us. I went with CSI:NY to be canceled, and CSI: Miami was instead. C'est la vie.

Otherwise, I picked every other CBS renewal and cancellation correctly for the season, with a push for The Good Wife predicted as a "toss up", (pending the final decision on Rules Of Engagement, which I predicted would be renewed). I will edit this post and the table once the final word on RoE is known tomorrow morning.

5/21 Update: Rules of Engagement has been renewed and will return mid-season.

With that the Index bids the 2011-12 CBS season adieu, there will be no more CBS Renew / Cancel posts until September. Happy summer CBS!

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I am glad it was Miami and not the NY version of CSI that was cancelled. It had been dragging for quite a while and the odd profile shot of David Caruso (Horatio) whenever he was talking to anyone was getting old. Gary Sinise is twice the actor Caruso is and Sela Ward has brought new life into that show. I figure give it one more season. Even the regular CSI is getting kind of stale.

Glad to see NCIS and NCIS:LA renewed. They are the best programming on CBS bar none. Also glad they axed “A Gifted Man” that was the most stupid premise since Ghost Whisperer.

    Just a guess..
    Mon: Mother/new sitcom/2AHM/newsitcom
Thur: BBT/2BG…BBT has never been able to launch anything, so move your hottest Monday show
FRI:MIKE AND MOLLY/Rules…would do better than anything on the other nets

I enjoy most of the CBS comedies, especially HIMYM and BBT. Hope RoE makes it, like that as well.

Not a big fan of their dramas however. During the HIMYM finale last night they kept showing previews of all the season-ending cliffhangers for the dramas, and I think the same scriptwriter was used on every show. Some big mean psychopath has it out for the NCIS/H50/Mentalist etc, theres going to be stuff blowing up…and one of the team may not survive!!!

Figures CBS cancels C.S.I.Miami and saves C.S.I.New York.Miami always had higher ratings and a much better show.Probably the best H.D. show on television.Sun.night has become poison for a show in the 10pm slot.Cold case deserved another year, constantly placed between 15-20 in viewership in the weekly ratings.Same with Miami the past 2 seasons and got into the top 10 the a few times in several of it’s final episodes. And aired many times after 10:30 during football season.Once aired at 10:53 EST.New York has a good cast and i should have been more into it with Gary Sinice since he’s one of the few conservative actors but the show is BORING!Could never stay awake watching it Wednesdays at 10pm.Miami should have been saved.Unforgettable should have also been saved. It had good ratings.

i figure next season will be csi ny final season

I am so pleased that CBS have renewed CSI NY. I used to watch all 3 of the CSI shows but NY is the only one that has kept my interest.

May try and watch Vegas again now, it was not the same when WP left and didnt really like Ray that much.

I am sorry for all the Miami fans out there, I used to enjoy it but Speedle died and then the stories just started to get a bit silly & WAY OTT plus the constant split screening used to get on my nerves so I quit watching several season ago.

From the 1st eipsode of NY I was hooked, although the teams on all 3 shows are close the team on NY feels more like a family than just coworkers and I for some reason I feel a lot more invested in that team than i every did with the other 2 shows.

I am sorry for any fans out there that had their fav show cancelled and to the cast and crew of those shows and hope that they all move on to bigger and better things.

    Slightly off topic here but…..

I am in the Key demo that the ad men love but not being one of those with a magic box my watching a show does not count. I honestly think that in this day and age that the the Ad men have to serious rethink about things like the key demo and not because the population is growing old.

While I work full time it is my parents that have the spare money. If the adverts are on I tend to change channel or make a drive but I dont watch the ads, my parents tend to watch more of the adverts. If I do see an advert I dont think “I must get me one of those” I am a lot more cinical and see adverys has background white noise or junk. If my parents see them (depending on what it is) one of them would more thank likely thinking hmmmmm do I need one of those.

When new technolgy comes out its my father who gets it 1st, I tend to wait and see if he likes it and how easy it is before I even think about it. You may think that my parents are not the norm but every one of my parents friends and their families is the same. I see the older people where I work being exactly the same as well.

So I think that it is time that those advertisers realize that the normal key demo may not be as key as they think.

I also think that it is time that they way the ratings are collected should also be updated. Again in this day and age there has to be a better way.

The Finder cancelled! I am so mad! That was a good show. I love Unforgettable and Harry’s Law too! BOOOOOOOO! Stupid CBS.

BTW, I would pick CSI:NY or Miami anytime. I lost interest in Miami 2 years ago.

  • kat

I am thrilled that NY got renewed! I was much more a fan of it than Miami even though I watched both! As for people saying Miami didnt get a good ending….I think it was the perfect ending! And it really shouldnt have been a surprise it got cancelled…it was the first time in 10 years it didnt end with a cliffhanger! Bravo CBS!

  • Rebecca

lol I noticed those promos too. And HIMYM, Rules and TBBT are all I watch on CBS. Going by what’s coming in the fall, they’re still all I’m going to watch.

Again, we are very close to deciding a winner!

“You want to know what the G stands for? Gary. Gaston. Gustav. It’s funny – I have many names, but you’re only looking for one.”
-Marcel Janvier (“The Chameleon”), from NCIS: Los Angeles episode 3.24 “Sans Voir, Part 2″

  • AYM

It’s about time they took CSI Miami off the air…that show died years ago. As for Unforgettable, that show was totally forgettable. They lost me the first time I watched the show and in her flash-backs she could see a 360 view of everything around her…as if she could possibly have memory of her own back.

  • AYM

I don’t understand the lack of commitment CBS has for Rules of Engagement, it’s a funny show. My husband and I watch it every week without fail and it always, ALWAYS makes us laugh.

  • JS2008

I’m amazed at the entertainment industry today and what they think we, (the public) like. I realize attitude is; “If you don’t like what you’re watching, change the channel”, and I do if there is something worth watching on another channel. I have to admit when some shows started, i.e. 2 broke girls, it was funny. I’m not a prude and I like a little risque joke once in a while, but not continuously for the entire show. When a show has 26 episodes a season, and it’s only 22 minutes of actual air time each week and all it talks about is genitals, vibrators, masturbation, and sex, how long does this keep people interested? And, how many ways is there to say it? I gave up after the 2nd show. Shows like “Whitney, Up all night” and “2 Broke girls” beat out shows like “The gifted man, Unforgettable” and on the other channels Alcatraz and Awake”? Granted, not perfect shows but definitely worth watching and the subject is not always sex. Violence yes, but good shows have violence also, i.e. CSI: LV, Blue Bloods, Person of Interest and even the Mentalist and they all get good reviews. In this day and age of VCR’s and DVR’s we can watch just about anything and at our own leisure how can the Nelson ratings figure out what people watch anymore? I realize you cater to a certain audience but some of us seniors like shows that seem to get canceled every season after two or three showings. Now, I hear they are planning to move the Mentalist to Sunday nights at 10, THE KISS OF DEATH time slot. During football season this will be at least 11 if we are lucky and want to copy it we will have to set up the DVRs for at least midnight because the DVR is not capable of knowing that the football game went over its actual scheduled time every week. Frustrated and disappointed and I hope there are other TV watchers out there that will agree with me.

I feel so special, having cast the last vote… Lol.

  • Rebecca

Congrats to POI winning the game. Good thing it didn’t wait until my vote later today, since I’m out of CBS show quotes again. lol

  • Legal Girl in Florida

I HATE that CBS cancelled CSI:Miami. But, when I think about it, I guess the season/series finale did have an acceptable ending. It did not leave anything undone, no cliff hanger. I would have thought NY would have been the first CSI to go, but I would have though wrong. I will miss Miami and have been a viewer since day one. I also think CBS did Miami an injustice by moving it from Monday to Sunday and then all of the sports pre-rempted it on a continuous basis. I don’t have DVR, and some people (including me) do have to get up Monday morning and go to work so don’t stay up till 12:30 to go to bed. CSI:Miami – job well done. CBS – serious mistake.

for real men is being renewed the show sucked this season and kutcher was no catch. i would like to know what people were watching the show i have seen only one episode and that was enough to turn the channel on and as for miami they should have gotten at least the summer to wrap up the show and unforgettable was getting more interesting in the end there so what is up with you CBS? and these reality shows have to be cut back on i see enough stupidity in real life without having to see it on television that goes for all of the networks especially these talent finding ones. and some of these comedies are rehashes of older ones or episodes give us a break lets get original already
