I knew one of the CSI offspring would get canned, but I admitted not really being able to pick which one since the decision was likely driven by syndication economics that are hidden to us. I went with CSI:NY to be canceled, and CSI: Miami was instead. C'est la vie.

Otherwise, I picked every other CBS renewal and cancellation correctly for the season, with a push for The Good Wife predicted as a "toss up", (pending the final decision on Rules of Engagement, which I predicted would be renewed). I will edit this post and the table once the final word on RoE is known tomorrow morning.

5/21 Update: Rules of Engagement has been renewed and will return mid-season.

With that the Index bids the 2011-12 CBS season adieu, there will be no more CBS Renew / Cancel posts until September. Happy summer CBS!

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I am so disappointed with the cancellation of CSI Miami, NYC22, Unforgettable and A Gifted Man. We watched these faithfully. Some of the ones that renewed are really stupid. What a let down. We are already disappointed with the morning program CBS This Morning. Looks like we will be changing networks.

  • UncleRob

darlene — “Finder” was on Fox.

But I agree — it was a great show. A LOT better than a lot of shows which were renewed.

cannot believe that CSI MIAMI, UNFORGETTABLE, HARRY’S LAW, NYC22 ARE BEING CANCELLED…AT LEAST THEY ARE ENTERTAINING…BUT TO PICK UP TWO AND A HALF MEN, WITH AK…IS THE WORST MOVE…YOU HAVE TO BE A MORON TO WATCH IT..IT WAS SO FUNNY WITH CHARLIE SHEEN. HOW THE EXEC’S DECIDED WHICH SHOW TO CANCEL AND KEEP WAS NOT DONE WITH THE PUBLIC VIEWERS IN MIND. NYC WAS GIVEN ENOUGH TIME. PLEASE DO NOT REPLACE THESE SHOWS WITH REALITY SHOWS…ENOUGH ALREADY…GIVE US A GOOD COP STORY ANYTIME!!

    @Debsafan
Well now we know what you think. Quality acting puzzles you; ham acting keeps you awake. Well-written, engrossing scripts made your poor little head spin; scripts written like old westerns with lots of five-minute segments with pictures and music but no dialog — sorta like comic books — manages to hold your weak attention for a while. Well, you’re entitled to your taste. All I’m saying is: it’s not everyone’s taste.

Couldn’t agree more. Sela Ward rocks–always has. Sinise does indeed make Caruso look a high-school lead playing Romeo. But to be fair, when Caruso was young, he was a pretty amazing actor, and I’m sure it’s still in him to do a knockout job. The sad fact is that they intentionally make the tone of CSI:Miami rather like anime — from the tropical lens filters to the John-wayne-style posturing with the sunglasses. I used to think that blonde (I forget her name) was a terrific newcomer. She was simply amazing in her short stint on West Wing. But instead she’s gotten pretty rich and wasted her beautiful youth playing a boobs-first bimbo in the background with a frozen face and one of the most horrible lip jobs I’ve ever seen. Because that’s the show’s style. So there are two good actors who have been toasted, roasted and grilled to maintain the show’s concept — it’s not like they’re all a bunch of no-accounts by any means.

CSI NY was more little more realistic vs. Miami that became boring and cartoonish for the last two seasons. It should’ve been their last season this year. This season just seemed like Miami was out of gas and ideas. After 8 seasons most shows should be canceled. Season 9 -10 of many shows just seem to really give up and try to fill syndication quotas rather than producin quality storylines.

At this point I wish you could get cable plans with HBO/Showtime/TNT/AMC and other specialty channels only as broadcast networks have fogotten how to make quality TV shows.

  • Kathy Brusky

So sorry to CSI–Miami not being renewed. CBS should think of getting rid some
of your so called comedy shows. My Husband & I both like ALL of the CSI shows, along with NCIS and NCIS–LA, Unforgettable, Person of Interest & Blue Bloods. You should have tried
    to not be opposite Football.

  • Joyce Robinson

I’m very upset that CSI Miami was canceled. It was my favorite one, with good actors and good acting

  • ROE

What is the problem with rules of engagement? one of the best shows!

  • MELSY

NOT A GIFTED MAN!!! I LOVE THAT SHOW!!! FRIDAYS WON’T BE THE SAME!! :(

  • Loey

This decision really made me surprised because I thought Miami would be the one to be renewed.
CSI NY once again cheated death!!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Loey

I can’t stand watching Miami cuz it’s just like a freak show where all the actors running around and talking silly. And Mr.Sunglasses is the most ridiculous one. He is always putting on and off his sunglasses for nothing. Miami was run out of the ideas years ago and what makes me surprised here is why it took so long for CBS to cancelled it. Finally they did it!!!
Mac is far better. He is an awesome character who lives with his heart (so does Sinise) and the NY team is more like a family than any other teams. It deserves another chance.
I’m glad that my two favorite CSI shows will make for the next season. Can’t wait to watch them :)

  • Judy Dobson

I think that it is pathetic that any show you have on tv that requires a brain to watch gets cancelled. Please explain what was wrong with a gifted man. It was new and different and you had to engage your brain. There in lies the problem.

Sad commentary on the state of this country. Let’s keep all of the non-sensical crap and get rid of everything else. Is that your ultimate goal?

  • Juddy

A Gifted man didnt get much chance and cancelled !really!!!! Unforgettable, please!!! and CSI Miami REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hello is more people who wach your chanel, the ones dont have a facebook dont forget the rest of HUMAN we still people????????????????

  • Dan

    @Robert or Bill

Zap2it is reporting TNT and Lifetime may be interested in picking Unforgettable up for a second season a la Southland.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

@Dan, Deadline began that story. I have no way of evaluating the likelihood.

  • Dan

True, if it happens that would be the first time in a while or maybe ever that a cable network picks up a canceled CBS drama.

  • tvfreak

    Good news, Unforgettable fans! :D

    http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/05/unforgettable-may-not-be-dead-yet-lifetime-tnt-interested-in-canceled-cbs-show.html

Personally I’d prefer if TNT picked it up, but better Lifetime than neither! Maybe I won’t have so much egg on my face after all. ;)

  • Gustavo

When it´s gonna decide CBS whether RoE stays one more season of get cancel?

  • Dan

@Gustavo – The decision will likely be made sometime next week though I wouldnt be surprised if it happened later.

@TVfreak – It could happen Unforgettable wasnt a bad show and didpull in good numbers, however CBS always has high rated shows all over their schedule so they need to trim the edges to make room for fall which is why Unforgettable was axed.
