I knew one of the CSI offspring would get canned, but I admitted not really being able to pick which one since the decision was likely driven by syndication economics that are hidden to us. I went with CSI:NY to be canceled, and CSI: Miami was instead. C'est la vie.

Otherwise, I picked every other CBS renewal and cancellation correctly for the season, with a push for The Good Wife predicted as a "toss up", (pending the final decision on Rules of Engagement, which I predicted would be renewed). I will edit this post and the table once the final word on RoE is known tomorrow morning.

5/21 Update: Rules of Engagement has been renewed and will return mid-season.

With that the Index bids the 2011-12 CBS season adieu, there will be no more CBS Renew / Cancel posts until September. Happy summer CBS!

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I am really sad to hear A Gifted Man was cancelled. It was a great show with a lot of promise. it was one of my favorites. So was unforgettable. Too bad cbs can’t give it’s shows a chance. All they want is gay shows or crude shows like two and a half men. Csi miami was also a great show, much better than the other two csi’s.

    @Dan;Thanks!.:)

Now with Two and a half men on Thursday:Mike & Molly and Hawaii five-0 will certain face new lows.

Unforgettable going to cable makes a lot of sense given how it did pull in thoroughly decent numbers by anyone else’s standards (if I’m not mistaken, it’d have been the #1 scripted drama on NBC!). If TNT or Lifetime could afford it, I’m sure it’d be a big hitter for them.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the delay in the RoE announcement relates to discussing the size of any season order. 13 is the obvious order to take the show to 100, but seeing as the show will only be used as spackle, CBS might not want as many as 13. On the other hand, if Partners struggles out of the gate and becomes this year’s HaTeBAG, yes CBS will have Friend Me on the bench, but unless they extend that show’s order significantly, there’ll be quite a few gaps just waiting for RoE to plug in.

CBS might also be holding it back while they try and sell it to syndication. That’s the supposed purpose of any new season for Rules, and it’s not got a deal yet. While a show that’s meant to go straight on the fall schedule has to have its decision made earlier (hence TGW’s pre-emptive “let’s get it to 88″ renewal), RoE is a spackle show now, and CBS can defer the renew/cancel decision on it some way past the upfronts because they don’t have to fill their bench by mid-May. Sure enough, they’ve deferred.

I also believe CSI: Miami deserved one last suspence, ending season…very disappointed it kept moving in da wrong time slot…I believe ders many a fan wondering why dey jumped da gun on dat series…da past few time slot changes ruined it 4 dat series…do more research den dat…

  • Shahhida

Cant wait 2 c more Max and Caroline

  • Kim

I think it would not of been cut if it had another time slot! Football season screwed up the 10 slot

I like both CSI NY and Miami but really am partial to NY. I love the cast and crew especially Gary Sinise for all the extra things he does. This is the first thing I have really liked Sela Ward in I will be glad to see them all back next fall I hope they stay on Friday night. I wouldn’t mind seing The Good Wife go and CSI Miami stay. I also hope Rules of Engagement stays, very funny.

  • Rebecca

Cool, Rules of Engagement got renewed for a seventh season of 13 episodes (might be its last, might not be).

  • ilovecsi

This is super irritating! Why is CSI: Miami being cancelled? In my personal opinion, it’s WAY better than NY. After Stella left, the show just went downhill.

  • uk watcher 57

why did they can unforgettable – its the most unforgettable series on the list……

  • Sherry Reiss

I dint understand CBS…….bring back CSI Miami!!!!!!,!,!,!!,!,!,,,,

  • Donna

I am EXTREMELY happy that csi ny is getting another season!!!! I LOVE this show!! They had more of a storyline than the others did!! Although I liked Miami I’ll survive w/o it however I would NOT survive w/o csi ny I really only just got into it during the crossover two years ago!!!! Thank you CBS for saving my show! There is a whole world out there in fanfiction universe that will also be pleased w/this announcement as they write stories week after week based on the aired episode!! I do however agree that it should have gotten a swan song like fox did for House!!

  • Donna

Also why did they cancel unforgettable?

  • bigmanjim

To the lake of fire for the networks. I keep my cable and just watch reruns.
To heck with 58 and older they completely forgot us. I won’t watch network tv except for my favorites and refused to purchase anything from their commercials.

Those ad supported cable networks operate the same way as the broadcast networks. Many focus on different age/gender demos, but none care about folks as old as you are. (and few care about folks as old as I am)

Looks like its HBO, Showtime and repeats for you!

Cancelling CSI Miami was way over due, but A Gifted Man was one of my favorites! I am very glad that Persons of Interest made the cut.

  • LL Kool Lynx

A Gifted Man was a great show. Probably to cerebral for the American public. I see that 21/2 Men and 2 Broke Girls is still on. Sad commentary on the intelligence of the American public.

  • pervis
