Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2011-12 season in May, 2012. (includes results from January 2- May 13, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The L.A. Complex canceled 0.40
Ringer* canceled 0.68
Nikita (F) renewed 0.69
Gossip Girl  renewed 0.82
Hart Of Dixie renewed 0.84
90210 renewed 0.98
The Secret Circle canceled 0.99
One Tree Hill* final season 1.07
Supernatural (F) renewed 1.09
Vampire Diaries  renewed 1.83

After having them as "toss ups" for renewal or cancellation for most of the year, I predicted cancellation for both Nikita and Hart Of Dixie, and blew both those calls. After being moved to a "toss up" late in the season, I predicted that The Secret Circle would be renewed, and blew that call too. Props to Robert who called both Hart of Dixie and The Secret Circle correctly, and missed only Nikita.

My guess is that the late season swoon by The Secret Circle killed it, and I have so little experience with shows that have ratings dives late, I was unable to take it fully into account.

5/18 Update: As expected, The L.A. Complex was nowhere to be found on the CW 2012-13 schedule. It will never air during the US broadcast season again. It will live on in Canada, and wouldn't stun me if it aired during the summer in the US, but we will have to wait and see.

While I did get all the other CW show final predictions correct, there are so few of them that's like saying I lost my thumb and index finger, but the rest of my hand was fine. As a network, the CW proved to be collectively my worst predicted this season by a wide margin. Ouch!

With that the Index bids the 2011-12 CW season adieu, there will be no more CW Renew / Cancel posts until September. Happy summer CW!

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Nikita season 3, here we go! :)

  • Marcelo

    Gonna miss Ringer tho :/

  • Brittney

When it’s listed like this it looks so ridiculous that The Secret Circle was cancelled. I get why, but it sucks considering that was the only show I watched on The CW. That being said, the head of Epitome (the company that produces The LA Complex) is going to be at The CW Upfronts on Thursday.

  • Sid

I love seeing “renewed” next to NIKITA :D

  • Adrian

    Nikita haters in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…

I am so happy Nikita got renewed. HOD not so much. GG definitively not.

But I don’t care about existing shows anymore other than SPN and Nikita. Bring on the new ones!

  • Don

Real happy HOD is nenewed. Great cast with lots of potential.

  • Esdru

    Nikita, most deserved renewal ever!

  • KS

I hope Supernatural will improve at least next season. I hope new show runner writes better story lines straight from his heart, unlike this season, where the story lines seem to target 30+ females exclusively.

  • KS

I gotta admit, Nikita is currently THE BEST SHOW ON CW. I have never watched it, but based on what my friends said. I wanna watch it along with Dexter, The Walking Dead, Revolution, Game of Thrones, White Collar next season.

  • Panda

I still can’t get over TSC’s cancellation. What a blow, and the show was just getting off its feet =( To be fair though, the ratings just didn’t merit it sticking on Thursday nights, and moving to Fridays could have gotten it lower numbers than Nikita. Oh well.

  • ron

HoD should died instead of TSC, Nikita deserved it renewed im happy about that!

  • enes

The Secret Circle should be renewed ! Not Nikita that is a trash show and that is in the bottom of the list ! or Hart of Dixie with the terrible writing
Go to hell CW and that why your ratings are the worst you are doing this to your self ! P.s Mark Pedowitz lear how to manage a network first before you take the spot !

  • KS

I welcome CW’s all renewal and cancellation decisions. I hope they are also scheduled meticulously. I really hope Mark P. is successful in his efforts.

    @Bill Gorman
I will update the table once the final word on The L.A. Complex is known on Thursday, and be as shocked as everyone else if the CW renews it. But it will live on in Canada!

The second season is supposed to start in July in Canada. I wouldn’t be terribly shocked if the CW picks it up to air simultaneously with the Canadian airings. They could push back the premiere of another show (maybe 90210?) to October and then have less repeats of it in the spring.

  • Matt H.

Is there a way to adjust the index to retro-accurately predict Nikita’s renewal?

  • Kavyn

Here’s hoping they advertise HOD and Nikita better next year. Nikita pretty much got none this year.

  • danny94

Glad for nikita fans but i mean how the hell did a show getting 0.4’s get renewed, ino it’s on a friday but i mean supernatural is able to pull in 0.7’s…

  • Tom

I understood that Nikita could be dragged to syndication, just so the network had something in that pipeline. I just couldn’t believe that the network would eat the terrible ratings for two years to make it happen.

TSC… looks suspiciously like a case of retention! Or, at best, a combination of retention and lower 18-34 than Dixie. (Yeah, CW claims they care about 18-34, but there is little evidence of it, e.g. LUX’s 18-34 superior-to-all-other-options’-ratings getting canned last year.)

  • suzie

So happy about HoD, the people calling it crap have never watched I can tell.

  • AirBud

Do you really think The CW will push back 90210 in order to air a show that gets half the demo rating? And possibly launch a new show with a lead in getting 0.3? Unlikely.
