After having them as "toss ups" for renewal or cancellation for most of the year, I predicted cancellation for both Nikita and Hart Of Dixie, and blew both those calls. After being moved to a "toss up" late in the season, I predicted that The Secret Circle would be renewed, and blew that call too. Props to Robert who called both Hart Of Dixie and The Secret Circle correctly, and missed only Nikita.

My guess is that the late season swoon by The Secret Circle killed it, and I have so little experience with shows that have ratings dives late, I was unable to take it fully into account.

5/18 Update: As expected, The L.A. Complex was nowhere to be found on the CW 2012-13 schedule. It will never air during the US broadcast season again. It will live on in Canada, and wouldn't stun me if it aired during the summer in the US, but we will have to wait and see.

While I did get all the other CW show final predictions correct, there are so few of them that's like saying I lost my thumb and index finger, but the rest of my hand was fine. As a network, the CW proved to be collectively my worst predicted this season by a wide margin. Ouch!

With that the Index bids the 2011-12 CW season adieu, there will be no more CW Renew / Cancel posts until September. Happy summer CW!

The Renew / Cancel Index above includes results beginning January 2, 2012. How did the CW's shows stack up based on their Fall results? Click here.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I still think TSC should have been renewed.

  • Lisa

Nikita, most ridiculous renewal of the year! I can kind of see why Hart of Dixie was kept, though, and I can’t argue with Ringer ( :( ) going.

  • Tyler

    @ Dillan

Yep, you and a lot of other people. I didn’t care for the show all that much, but was still surprised of it’s cancelation.
I think the age demo and retention for TVD to TSC varied too drastically to warrant keeping it at it’s time slot or pushing it to Friday for future decline. I think this series would have actually made it had TVD and TSC switched time slots at the start of the season. While that probably doesn’t make sense to many; I felt like TSC was always a warmup act for CW’s main event and the numbers reflect this. TSC was never as edgy as it hoped to be, both to the viewers and CW. But, I think it would have made it as a prime-time “pre-show”. It had/has enough fans to make a move to MTV or ABC Family but it would need a steady kick-start and better story archs to keep viewers. We’ll see, I just don’t think this is the last we’ve heard of TSC.

I agree that The Secret Circle really shouldn’t have been canceled despite its downward trend. But as I’ve said before, hey, it’s the CW. Some of their decisions clearly don’t make sense.

But since Fox renewed one of its lowest-rated shows (Fringe) and Body of Proof was also renewed, clearly more networks than the CW have some reason for doing this sort of thing. It’s just not clear to me what that reason could be.

In any event, I’m glad Bill admits that basically the CW was a significant aberration in the Renew/Cancel Index. I think that establishes what I said above – that the CW is an aberration network. :-)

In any event, I’m loving that Nikita will be back even if I miss TSC.

  • A-

meh over that TSC got canned tho Nikita shouldn’t have been renewed with those dreadful ratings next season it will flop ;)

  • Felipe

HAHA lol at this “The Secret Circle should be renewed ! Not Nikita that is a trash show”

Oh so do u watch The Secret Circle BUT Nikita it’s the trash show? Haha, something’s wrong in this comment. :)

    Go Nikita Season 3 <3

  • JJA

The CW should have canceled Gossip Girl and kept Secret Circle. THAT was their mistake.

The Nikita renewal was the right decision. It will likely be moved off Friday and placed with one of the new shows (probably “Beauty & The Beast”). The network seems to be banking that its ratings will go up.

  • lookingforwonder

gonna miss secret circle and ringer! I am tired of the clone shows making it through and the new idea shows getting cut.

  • fan

I”M CRYING THE SECRET CIRCLE WAS MY FAVORITE SHOW

  • Jenny

@ Taylor “I need to catch up on Hart of Dixie too from the beggining, I just recently start watching due to everyone was talking about it and it’s fate on here and now I’m hooked lol. I started watching it back in March, so that’s pretty much half the season!”

me too, I started watching Hart Of Dixie due to the comments on tvbythenumbers and now it is my favorite show!

CW has my favorite show Hart Of Dixie , they need to give it a better time slot and promote it more

    @KS
You should contact the international arm of Warner Brothers Television with your concerns.
They’re a huge corporation, to be fair they probably aren’t very concerned with shopping Supernatural around as long as it’s in the black. It’s not a TV giant like some of their shows (The Voice or The Big Bang Theory, for example) nor half failing (like Nikita or Fringe) so I can understand them just letting it coast by as the middle of the pack show it is. But if you want some actual answers to your questions, your best bet is to try to get them from the source.

Also, I would say if you wanted to see the first run show in your country the best thing to do would be to watch it and show that there is a demand for it, but after a quick Google search I believe India also has Nielsen boxes haha so I don’t guess it matters if you personally watch the reruns or not. Can’t escape Nielsen! Also, India was home to Gandhi and Mother Tessa. Pretty impressive folk, so don’t sell yourself short. My mother toured India a couple years ago, so I know it’s a little dumb to focus a lot of effort on a TV show (isn’t it always) but if you’re that passionate about it and it would make you happy to see it at the same time as the US, might as well take some time out to write some letters or make a phone call to voice your opinion. Maybe you can even get some answers to your questions. What have you to lose?

  • Bizarro

They should put Nikita tuesdays at 9. It would do SO GOOD their!

  • A

I cannot at Secret Circle being higher than ALL freshmen shows but its the one they choose to axe. #Retarded

  • angela

I LOVE SECRET CIRCLE it is the BEST SHOW!

  • Valarie

    Cancel LA Complex!

  • Taylor

People THE SECRET CIRCLE and RINGER are gone, axed, cancelled! #get.over.it!

  • Sid

I think in all fairness that if they move NIKITA off of Friday, they should do the same with SPN. SPN can be paired with Arrrow and NIKITA with B&tB.

I’m really excited/anxious to see where The CW will place their shows.

    @Restless

We are proud to have Gandhi, Mother Teresa and 3 richest persons in the world are from India. But, just live one day here, you would understand how difficult the life is. I am fortunately from an upper middle class family so can enjoy comforts, but not everyone is not as lucky as me. Do you know how heart breaking it is, to see little children below 5 years sleeping on the roads every day, be it cold, hot or rain? Do you know, a lot of mothers have to give birth to children on the foot paths? No proper Forster system in our country. Do you know the cleanliness levels of our country? Do you know the corruption levels in our country?($35 billion public money is robbed by politicians but all the culprits are enjoying at home now without any punishment). Do you know how many people including go hungry to bed each night in our country? Do you know the amount of Indian public money soaring in Switzerland banks which is supposed to be enough to feed the entire country for 2 years even though all the citizens are unemployed? A pregnant woman walking on the road was killed by a drunken driver, driving a BMW. That driver was so rich. So he got punishment just for 3 hours and he is out of jail. One life is equal to 3 hours apparently. Do you know most of the Indian media never speaks for public, but always supports government, however bad government functions?
I know India has a lot of things to be proud of. But, none of them are useful now, unless horrible things happening in our country are stopped.
If I have to demand the authorities, I have a thousand things to demand before demanding about a stupid TV show to air on my TV.

And coming to Nielsen viewers. I believe I am a Nielsen viewer in our country. I never heard of Nielsen boxes in our country but, I believe there are other ways of looking at what people watch like set top boxes, where they analyze the images.

I think the CW should seriously think of moving TVD because it will face heavy competition next season with x factor and american idol. especially with britney spears and demi lavoto on x factor
