Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2011-12 season in May, 2012. (includes results from January 2- May 13, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The L.A. Complex canceled 0.40
Ringer* canceled 0.68
Nikita (F) renewed 0.69
Gossip Girl  renewed 0.82
Hart Of Dixie renewed 0.84
90210 renewed 0.98
The Secret Circle canceled 0.99
One Tree Hill* final season 1.07
Supernatural (F) renewed 1.09
Vampire Diaries  renewed 1.83

After having them as "toss ups" for renewal or cancellation for most of the year, I predicted cancellation for both Nikita and Hart Of Dixie, and blew both those calls. After being moved to a "toss up" late in the season, I predicted that The Secret Circle would be renewed, and blew that call too. Props to Robert who called both Hart of Dixie and The Secret Circle correctly, and missed only Nikita.

My guess is that the late season swoon by The Secret Circle killed it, and I have so little experience with shows that have ratings dives late, I was unable to take it fully into account.

5/18 Update: As expected, The L.A. Complex was nowhere to be found on the CW 2012-13 schedule. It will never air during the US broadcast season again. It will live on in Canada, and wouldn't stun me if it aired during the summer in the US, but we will have to wait and see.

While I did get all the other CW show final predictions correct, there are so few of them that's like saying I lost my thumb and index finger, but the rest of my hand was fine. As a network, the CW proved to be collectively my worst predicted this season by a wide margin. Ouch!

With that the Index bids the 2011-12 CW season adieu, there will be no more CW Renew / Cancel posts until September. Happy summer CW!

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

i’m please about nikita getting renewed but why, WHY did they cancel the secret circle? it was getting decent ratings compared to the other CW shows, instead they decide to renew nikita, not that i’m complaining, I love that show, just seems a bit puzzling.

  • KS

Then what are they going to air on Friday? GG and HoD? I don’t think Supernatural is going anywhere from Friday. It is the only show that can really live on a Friday night. If Nikita is gonna be moved to some other day, why don’t they try Arrow and Nikita on Wednesday/Tuesday? I don’t want a promising show to be premiered on a Friday night, just because it is compatible with an other show.

“they should have canceled nikita and vampire diaries instead, the secret circle and ringer was two fantastic shows”

nikita I can understand, as much as I love the show I would have understood if they cancelled it, aside from ringer it was the lowest rated CW show this year, but vampire diaires? seriously? it’s the highest rated show on the network there is NO WAY that was getting cancelled this year.

  • Morgan Wick

Prediction: The CW does not even mention the LA Complex on Thursday. They don’t see its cancellation as even worthy of announcing.

I’m getting the impression that a lot of people are really miffed about the way the CW cancelled TSC. Personally, I’m done with Nikita and HOD. All they do is remind me of how lousy they are in comparison to TSC. With the exception of TVD, there also doesn’t seem to be much else coming up next season on the CW that seems very compelling. Call it a boycott or just indifference, but I’m not inclined to invest any time in next season’s shows only to have the the CW pull the rug out from under them as well. Adios, CW.

  • Spencer

    I watch 3 CW Shows
    3. The Secret Circle
    2. Ringer
    1. Hart of Dixie

  • Sid

So you’re gonna stop watching two shows because one show you did like got cancelled?

How old are you Secret Circle fans?

  • Restless

Everyone has their problems. Plus I told you, I know, my family has personally been there.
You’re the one crying about why Supernatural isn’t aired first run in your country. Instead of writing about it here, try putting it in a letter and mailing it to your TV station. You can’t make any kind of difference if you don’t try or if you sit around waiting for others to do it for you.
And there’s no reason why you can’t do more than one thing, like talk to your TV station about what’s aired and protest to your government about injustices, or whatever else you’re passionate about. Especially if those things are small like phone calls or letter writing (which, for the record, is mostly what regular old USA citizens do). One voice is a whisper, but a crowd of voices is a roar. Stop making excuses for why you shouldn’t bother even doing the bare minimum.

Oh and that you’re not sure if your viewing matters or not probably means it doesn’t. Top box probably isn’t the same thing any more than a DirectTV or Dish Network box or cable here is the same thing.

stop complaining about TSC…at most it would have gotten another 13 episodes like life unexpected and reaper, than canceled…but it does show who the network hearts more Kevin Williamson or Josh Schwartz

  • krell

If Ringer & TSC is under the fallen wings Josh Schwarts, it could be 100% renewed but its not; GG & HoD?! Just soo predictable.

  • Peter Mazz

@krell I know! So unfair! I Hate the CW and i hate Josh schwartz. How every show of Josh always gets renewed??!! GG? Seriously? HoD? COME ON! Just because the CW is a friend of him. That’s injustice! I couldn’t watch The last 2 episodes of ”Hart” I was going to watch them online… but now that i know that TSC was cancelled for that! It’s such a dissapointment. :( I’m done with the CW. Goodbye

  • Sid

    @Secret Circle fans

You’ll get over it by this Fall. I acted the same way when MELROSE PLACE was cancelled and then I dived right into NIKITA the following Season.

It’s not just The CW, every network does this but somehow we manage to forget and find new shows in the Fall.

  • Freyja

I mean boring characters and boring storylines

Kinda like TSC bad characters, bad actors, and a bad plot ;) The fact a Friday show beat TSC is telling. Especially when TSC got more promotion and a better lead in.

  • Kelly

I think the Carrie Diaries should have been ordered to ABC family. Not on the CW. Teenage love, family, friendship, and high school drama are the ABC Family image. If the CW is trying to truly change its image to be a better competitor to the other broadcasters then this is not it. This show will bring in the teenage demo (I doubt the viewers that watched the original Sex and the City will watch this) who will relate to this show but not much of the demo that counts in ratings (age 18 to 49). This show is seems very similar to gossip girl. This is my opinion.

  • ren

The Secret Circle is the 4th highest rated show on CW and really started to get exciting the last several episodes. It’s got a built in fan-base of people who also like Vampire Diaries, Buffy and Angel — and CW cancelled the show. That just doesn’t make any sense. L.A. Complex has the lowest ratings and it is still undecided? Seriously, CW, wake up! The Secret Circle beat 5 of your renewed shows.

  • ren

I don’t watch any other show other than The Secret Circle on CW so no more ratings from me.

  • iknowgoodshows

its from the producers of gossip girl (Josh “golden boy” Schwartz and Stephanie Savage) it looks like the failed gossip girl prequel pilot

  • ren

To The Secret Circle Fans, I wonder if we could get FOX to pick the show up?

  • krell

    @ Peter
0.6 for HoD is still extremely & shamefully low for a 1st season show. And those tweeny fans of HoD who keeps on mocking GG where it is one of the highest rated & popular show if not the most; and during its 1st Season Finale, it scored around 3 MILLION viewers compared to some (consistetly scored) 0.6 1st Season Finale?!

  • iknowgoodshows

3 out of 10 hrs produced by Josh Schwartz next year on CW…hmmm
