The crazy fans will note that I "pushed" on a prediction for Fringe this season with it as a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation all season. As I noted elsewhere, no guts, no glory, but apparently all the whining from fans!

Otherwise, I predicted all the Fox renewals and cancellations correctly this season, most far in advance.

With that the Index bids the 2011-12 Fox season adieu, there will be no more Fox Renew / Cancel posts until September. Happy summer Fox!

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2012
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2012
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2012
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2012
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Is Bob’s Burger’s actually renewed? I know there are still (13?) unaired Season 2 episodes that will air in the fall, but what about a Season 3?

From Dollhouse episode 1.07 “Echoes” –
DeWitt: Are you making any progress?
Topher: I’m working! What are you doing, besides…being…
    DeWitt: Being what?
    Topher: Wait a minute.
    DeWitt: Sarcastic? Unfeeling? British?
    Topher: It’s an animal.
    DeWitt: Where?
    Topher: No! The word!
DeWitt: Still you have to admit I am very British. I don’t say hard…’Rs’…
Topher: You know what I like? Brown Sauce? What’s it made of? Science doesn’t know!
    DeWitt: It’s made of brown.
Topher: Brown…mined from the earth by the hard scrabble brown miners of north Brownderton!
DeWitt: Oh my god, I find lentils completely incomprehensible.
Topher: Our problems are huge and indomitable.
DeWitt: Ooh, I could eat that word. Or a crisp. Do you have any crisps?
Topher: You haven’t seen my drawer of inappropriate starches?

I suspect Fringe was renewed because serialized shows with satisfying endings do much better on Netflix, DVD, and probably even syndication. I think we’ll be seeing a lot more “final seasons” in the future.

Shame on Fox for cancelling The Finder – and shame, shame on the writers for that last episode. It’s like they wanted to punish the viewers rather than the network. Sure, it was pure escapist fare, but it was actually more believable than Touch, which should have been named What a Crock.

    @TVFreak

Have you started watching Fringe yet?

I noticed your avatar is the alt. universe’s Fringe Division emblem :)

“The crazy fans will note that I “pushed” on a prediction for Fringe this season with it as a “toss up” for renewal or cancellation all season. As I noted elsewhere, no guts, no glory, but apparently all the whining from fans!”

Given Fringe’s ratings PLUS its renewal for a fourth season, it’s hard to see how any critic could have done anything other than a “push.” By all the “rules” it should have been cancelled after Season 3. This could end up being a PR problem for Fox going forward. From now on, any time they decide to cancel a low rating show, the fan cry will be “But what about Fringe?”

  • Patrick G.

@ Bill… I “pushed” on a prediction for Fringe this season with it as a “toss up” for renewal or cancellation all season.

What does this mean? “FRINGE” was listed all season on this site as “Likely to be Canceled,” so I’d say you guys were wrong on the “FRINGE” renewal. I was saying all season that it would be renewed and pull a Warner Brothers’ “CHUCK” so WB could get past the more lucrative 100 episodes for syndication, and that’s exactly what happened. I see some egg on TVBTN here!

As for “Terra Nova” and “Touch,” the former should have been renewed and left on Monday’s at 9, and the latter should have been canceled. It just goes to prove how expensive TN must have been for FOX to cancel one of its own, in-house-made series. Such a shame, because it was stable enough in the demo and the index to otherwise warrant a renewal! :(

  • RVN

The biggest problem with Touch is that you keep waiting for Jack Bauer to just punch out people who won’t listen to him.

  • janel dvorak

PLEASE reconsider cancelling the Finder! It is truly one of the best new shows of the season! Maybe moving it to a different time slot would be better. Even a summer replacement. Please think about it!

  • Walter Bishop

Napoleon Dynamite might not have been cancelled if it was called Napoleon C-4.

  • golden joe

I’m with Mike. Bob’s Burgers’ Fall 2012 episodes have been a given since that order of additional episodes last year. I don’t think there’s been any word any seasons beyond that yet.

Those fall ones will count as season two still, right?

  • Walter Bishop

Im hoping TOUCH as a Jack Bauer episode (no extra paycheck costs! since Kiefer would play a dual role) The episode would be called “24” and would be the 24th episode of the series.

The Finder was great. You have action/comedy/drama all in one. This show has potantial. Should be renewed or picked up by another channel.

  • rob

I will nolonger watch a fox show in it’s first season because they always cancel the good shows like alcatraz.

  • Walter Bishop

The Finder could find just about anything – except enough viewers.

My guess is that the decision on Touch has to do with other factors. It could be it was considered borderline for cancellation because of the cost of the show. Terra Nova did decent numbers but the cost was high. It could also be that Reilly just really doesn’t care for the show that much. It seems to be a divisive show from a critical standpoint. Also, they may feel the show is trending down and that at least on Fridays even if it does mediocre it will be better than Fringe, which has horrendous ratings. I guess they just gave away Fringe to get that last half final season.
