What Does 'The Mentalist' At 10pm Sunday & 'The Good Wife' At 9pm Tell Us?

The typical amount of carping from fans of The Mentalist about its announced move away from the Thursday 10pm timeslot, but if you figure that CBS's two best timeslots to launch a new drama are 10pm Tuesday and 10pm Thursday, moving The Mentalist makes complete sense.

But why move it to Sunday at 10pm instead of Sunday at 9pm (an hour with more people viewing TV, and where the best rated shows of the night typically slot)?

Two possibilities:

1. CBS puts an absolute premium on making as few changes to their schedule as possible. Likely a factor, but they did make other moves (CSI:NY to 8pm) that weren't essential.

2. CBS doesn't own The Mentalist (Warner Brothers does), and they do own The Good Wife, and still haven't been able to sell it into syndication, and they're going to do everything in their power to give it the best ratings they possibly can as they try and get it sold, current ratings consequences be damned.

I think it was probably 10% reason 1 and 90% reason 2.

that and even though the number is 1.9 that 1.9 held steady through out the season when shows around it dropped. and that 1.9 happened up against football the walking dead and family guy. and 9 million viewers. 9 million viewers that shop at walmart and target and sees season 2 of the good wife and they buy it , then they go home and watch the hell out of it. and cbs gets all that money. also its a pretty good show. a show i will start watching. :)

All it tells me is that I now have a new recording conflict on my DVR that I have to work through.

  • Matt

I think it makes more of a ratings sense to put Mentalist at 9, but if CBS doesnt own it, that makes sense as well

I hate that they moved one of my favorite shows (The Mentalist) to Sunday. I am going to DVR it and watch it no matter WHEN it comes on, but it is so hard to DVR anything on Sundays with Football on and the schedule getting off. Yes, I could watch it live when ever it comes on, but I’ll be watching Football on Sunday nights.

Who should I send my bitchy email about the MENTALIST move to?

  • Gussi

it tells me that not everything is about A18-49, despite of Harry’s Law…

  • Tessa

Hm, The Good Wife. The show CBS got butthurt over not winning best drama at the PCAs and decided to eliminate the entire category because of it. Glad to hear it’s crapping at syndication.

  • Sky

The Good Wife will be cancel.

10pm on Sunday is the death slot. All fall the 10pm show airs at 11-11:30 with the football overruns. I would imagine, as I know many who do this, they tape or DVR the shows since they have gotten into the routine of watching something else on Sunday night. The rating are going to get slashed.

I never understand why CBS doesn’t schedule their football games @ 12:30 or 12:00. Is an hour earlier gonna prevent the heavy west coast partiers from having some Budweiser with their Cheerios?

Or make 60 minutes, 30 minutes.

Here’s to another frustrating Fall 2012-13 season.

“it tells me that not everything is about A18-49, despite of Harry’s Law…”

It should tell you that syndication factors sometimes trump current adults 18-49 ratings. Something we repeat constantly.

What else could it possibly tell you?

This is slightly off topic, but since it was mentioned in the summary above

I think the move of CSI:NY to the 8:00 hour on Friday is an attempt to offer alternative scheduling to the comedy line ups being offered by 2 of the other networks.
As such, it is more likely a better plan to use an established show in this slot. They have had no success with new launches in this slot since Ghost Whisperer.

    @Carmen,

I think the move of CSI:NY to the 8:00 hour on Friday is an attempt to offer alternative scheduling to the comedy line ups being offered by 2 of the other networks.

I think it’s much more about giving Made in Jersey a lead-in instead of expecting it to start the night.

“I think the move of CSI:NY to the 8:00 hour on Friday is an attempt to offer alternative scheduling to the comedy line ups being offered by 2 of the other networks.”

Nah, if that was the reason they could have put a new drama there like A Gifted Man.

Far more likely is the fact they realized that debuting a new drama at 8pm Friday dooms it, and wanted to give Made In Jersey a better chance than A Gifted Man had.

Edit: Holly’s typing speed > mine.

football season makes it too much of a hassle to commit to any cbs show that airs on sunday nights.

  • tvfreak

@Tessa: Seriously, WHAT THE HELL does CBS see in The Good Wife? They’ll never make beaucoup bucks off of it in syndication the way they did with the NCIS pair. Its ratings suck even for Sunday nights. And with various sports preemptions, plus the already atrocious ratings…Bill is right, we Mentalist fans are going to carp about CBS’s decision re: TM, because let’s face it, we have every right to do so. The wonderful stories of Patrick’s Playtime are going to be murdered in the ratings and I’m certain that by season’s end it’s at least 45% likely to join CSI: Miami in the post-TGW Sundays at 10 graveyard.

  • Sunday

@jdv: I want to do the same.

  • DW

if harry’s law was universal , not warner , i think it would stay or go to usa. they had close to 9 million too and they would get dvd money and rerun money.

  • TomSFBay

My Prediction for Sunday the Fall (ABC vs CBS):

    8PM

    Once Upon a Time 3.0

    Amazing Race 2.5

    9PM

    Revenge 2.7

    Good Wife 1.8

    10PM

    666 Park Avenue 2.1

    The Mentalist 2.0

  • Bjm

That tells me that I probably won’t be able to watch The Mentalist next season, and I probably won’t be able to DVR it because Football always messes up the Sunday night schedule on CBS. Never can watch or record CBS programing on Sunday nights for that very reason.

  • DW

dont blame the good wife for the mentalist moving. blame person of interest.
