What Does 'The Mentalist' At 10pm Sunday & 'The Good Wife' At 9pm Tell Us?

The typical amount of carping from fans of The Mentalist about its announced move away from the Thursday 10pm timeslot, but if you figure that CBS's two best timeslots to launch a new drama are 10pm Tuesday and 10pm Thursday, moving The Mentalist makes complete sense.

But why move it to Sunday at 10pm instead of Sunday at 9pm (an hour with more people viewing TV, and where the best rated shows of the night typically slot)?

Two possibilities:

1. CBS puts an absolute premium on making as few changes to their schedule as possible. Likely a factor, but they did make other moves (CSI:NY to 8pm) that weren't essential.

2. CBS doesn't own The Mentalist (Warner Brothers does), and they do own The Good Wife, and still haven't been able to sell it into syndication, and they're going to do everything in their power to give it the best ratings they possibly can as they try and get it sold, current ratings consequences be damned.

I think it was probably 10% reason 1 and 90% reason 2.

I don’t think CBS was showing a preference for “The Good Wife” over “The Mentalist.” I think they took into consideration that TM was a stronger show, that its fans would stick around and finish the night. Start strong, finish strong, and hope the middle holds up. I’m surprised CBS didn’t put “Vegas” in between “NCIS” and “NCIS: LA.”

I think TGW would do better against “666” than “Revenge.” (To me, the biggest surprise of the year was that “Revenge” became a hit. I’ll be even more surprised if it can sustain itself next season.)

It’s not necessarily double-headers on CBS that skews timing. If you’re on Eastern time, a single late game involving the team covered in your area (e.g., NY, Boston, Baltimore, Miami, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati) will throw off the schedule.

could the goodwife really be cancelled?

the thing is for 17 weeks and down the road 18 , cbs is going to show football on sunday at 415 – 430 eastern to go into primetime. now they should have a back up plan that if the game goes past 730 on the east coast that 60 minutes will run at a later date and we will rerun 60 on the west coast or preempt 60 through out the fall.

Why watch The Mentalist anymore? The writers gave up this year, redoing Red John (after that story line had a great ending last year) just shows the writers gave up, and the viewers are NOT watching. The writers of The Mentalist are following the “I woke up from a dream” shows, that always kills the shows, and insults the viewers.

Why follow The Mentalist anymore? Why have cliff hangers? Why try
to figure out who and how the bad guys are? The writers will change it all anyways.

And the writers ruined the character patrick jane in the last couple of episodes, and wasted all the great acting talent and characters this year.

Say good bye to The Mentalist. CBS has put it in the time slot for death. The only question now is: will it last the year before being canceled. I say no, it will be canceled mid season due to rapidly dropping ratings.

Too bad the writers of The Mentalist ran out of things to write about. Their sticking to Red John shows killed it, that is why CBS put it out to sunday where it knew it would die. They needed The Mentalist old time slot for a show that can get good ratings, and they knew The Mentalist had jumped the shark.

A people watching the well written with great plots The Good Wife, will not stick around for the NOW poorly written The Mentalist.

It tells us that The Mentalist should have stop the Red John episodes this year. The red john story line had a great ending last year.
By trying to continue the red john story line this year ruined the show for the viewers and they slowly stopped watching. CBS knew this and that is why they switched it to Sunday night, a night were the ratings will obviously fall, but it could give their old time slot to a good show.

Sadly, I use to like The Mentalist, but this years red john episodes turned me off of it. And the last episode of the year totally turned me off

    @ used to love mentalist

I loveD**** the mentalist. they used to have much more with the supporting characters, from lisbon, to cho and the entire team. also patrick jane went from going slightly nuts, to just being…..different, and not in the good and funny way that made me love the show.

sadly I feel the red john thing has taken away from what they do with everyone

The simple solution for CBS Sunday night fans is to DVR the evening shows and add an hour to the time. We routinely record CBS from 9 pm to midnight so we are sure to get the 10 pm show, no matter how late it goes on. We check CBS at 11 pm and see how “late” the show is running. If the news is on, we can stop the recording. It uses up an hour of time on the DVR, but we watch the Sunday shows on Monday, and then delete them.

Agreed, CBS keeps trying to put GW down our throats. It has its cult following and that’s it.
The Mentalist will outperform it and CBS will look dumb.

Not going to happen. CBS promotes 60 Minutes throughout their sports on Sunday. They are completely fine with their lineup being pushed back and they definitely want 60 Minutes to be airing every week.

I understand that it irritates some people, but they just have to accept that this is how things are and it isn’t going to change. It’s been this way for 40 years. Broadcast ratings are declining, advertisers pay for the 18-49 demo, FOX doesn’t program 10pm, reality competitions are successful, and CBS is going to have sports overruns more often than not during the broadcast season, with 60 Minutes following immidiately after the conclusion (except on the west coast).

  • Jenny

Bye Bye The Mentalist ! your lazy and poor writing this year killed you.

The only question now is: will CBS let it run the full year or cancel it mid season?

  • Jenny

    This year

The Good Wife > The Mentalist

  • Freddy Arrow

All this talk of overruns makes me glad I’m on the West Coast. The Good Wife DVRs just fine for me.

I don’t know why people are writing the obituary for The Mentalist. Cold Case and The Amazing Race ran on Sunday for years. CSI Miami had a two year run. The Good Wife was renewed. It’s not the death sentence people are making it out to be.

  • Gus

To me putting The Mentalist at 10:00 on Sunday means the end for the show is on the horizon. Not the very end right in 2013 but sometime in the middle of this decade. Shows like this start off pretty well then they lose some steam when it comes to viewer interest. Case in point: CSI Miami.

  • shut up jenny! thank you

  • Justin121

I can’t beleive you only focused on this

2.5 Men and (2 Broke Girls) are the BIG moves.

CSI: NY to 8 is same reason 2.5 Men to Thurs:

    nothing else coud work there.

2.5 Men moving away from Mondays, and to a :30 slot no less, is shocking.

CBS is replicating its Men-Bang success from 2009-2010 and thenthey’ll expand Thursdays. Genius. Really, really genius.

But Broke Girl getting the all-important Monday @ 9 spot is risky.

Very few changes this year. A third failed drama to air post-NCIS duo. I think the Thrusday drama will survive, the Tuesday won’t.

Oh, and I’m happy The Good WIfe anchoring Sudays still. Love it.

Sundays at 9 will have the absolute-best shows: Revenge and The Good Wife.

  • Sandy

I’m sorry Jenny you dislike The Mentalist so much. The shows are only fantasy.
some of you people don’t sound like your loyal watchers to the show. which is really sad. It’s people like you who ruin the ratings to a good show.
Simon Baker is a really good actor, and I can’t picture anyone else playing his part. The rest of the cast are really good to.
I don’t see what people see in a lot of the comedies. There really stupid.
I don’t see what people see in The Big Bang Theory. There no story to it. Just a
    lot of garbage.
How would you like it if someone was tearing your favorite show apart.because that is what you are doing with mine. The Mentalist.

  • Jack

OVERDAMOON, BEFORE YOU START PUTTING THE MENTALIST DONE, WHY DON’T YOU WATCH IT TOM TOMORROW NIGHT.I THINK THEY MIGHT BE GETTING CLOSER TO RED JOHN.
JANE SAID HE IS KNOW WORKING FOR RED JOHN.
HE’S REALLY GOING DOWN HILL. HE LOST HIS JOB LAST WEEK. AND TOMORROW HE SHOOTS
SOMEONE. HE IS GETTING SO LOW IT WILL BE A MIRACLE IF HE COMES OUT OF IT AND GETS
    HIS JOB BACK.

  • jake

they should have left the Mentalist where it was at. now the ratings for it will suffer big time. all the programs which have occupied Sundays 10pm time slot never did that great. they are making a big mistake here. also cbs should have given up on the good wife a long time ago. it’s taking up an hour that a good quality show could be occupying.

  • dd

TGW had ruined Marimi, now it will ruin TM. TGW should go to hell now!

  • Greg

CBS has so much strength across their schedule and they do need to launch new series in order to keep the rhythm going and not back themselves into a corner. While I am not a regular viewer of The Mentalist, I understand people being upset. I don’t like to change my viewing routine either, but it is a time slot that it will do OK in especially after football season. And they did try it out on a Friday night, so it could have ended up there and that could actually be worse in the long run.

  • Jack

IM REALLY SORRY JENNY YOU HATE THE MENTALIST SO MUCH BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE
    SO RUDE ABOUT IT.
THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO DO LIKE IT.
WHY DON’T YOU TELL ME YOUR FAVORITE SHOW IS SO I CAN TEAR IT APART LIKE YOUR
    DOING TO THE MENTALIST.
YOU WILL BE SORRY FOR NOT WATCHING IT TOMORROW. IT LOOKS LIKE A REALLY GOOD SHOW.

  • Tom

    JENNY

I’m getting really dam tired of you cutting down The Mentalist. If you can’t
say anything nice about the show, I wish you wouldn’t say any thing.
I’m not a fan of person of Interest, but there is no reason to put the show down.
    grow up.
