WWE® MONDAY NIGHT RAW® EXPANDS TO THREE ELECTRIFYING HOURS LAUCHING WITH THE 1,000th EPISODE, JULY 23 ON USA NETWORK

@JohnCena Tweets Historic Announcement From USA Upfront Presentation

NEW YORK – May 17, 2012 – WWE Superstar John Cena® announced via Twitter today that WWE Monday Night Raw will expand to a three-hour event 52 weeks a year. The extended telecast will kick-off July 23 at 8/7C on USA Network and marks the 1000th episode of the WWE Raw franchise and a television record – no other series has ever reached this milestone. The announcement was tweeted today by Cena (the No. 1 most influential male athlete on Twitter last month) during USA’s upfront presentation in New York City. The move firmly put WWE’s stake in the ground as one of the most powerful social brands in the world and an integral part of USA Network’s social media initiative.

“The WWE Universe is one of the most socially active and passionate fan bases in all of television,” said Chris McCumber and Jeff Wachtel, co-presidents USA Network. “The powerful three-hour block of live TV truly makes USA the year-round destination for young male viewers on Monday nights.”

“WWE is proud to celebrate this historic milestone with our partners at USA Network,” said WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon. “Our new three-hour Raw represents the next generation in interactive television where our fans won’t just watch the show, they will help create it.”

The expanded WWE Monday Night Raw will transform television to an unprecedented level of viewer interaction. Fans will have new ways to get involved in the show through WWE.com and social media by deciding matches, stipulations and new character development. WWE will brand this unprecedented fan interaction as “#RAWactive.”

WCW was really hurt by a three hour expansion they tried eons ago. Don’t know why they want to go for overkill.

  • chrisss

    @ GARebelman

When a network is paying you $30 million + a year, you pretty much do what ever they ask of you…

  • Kevin

Have they lost their minds..they can’t even fill two hours and make it entertaining right now.

  • Bookworm

I’m not really happy about this one. I like it when it was 2 hours with the 3 hour special. It gets to be the same thing every year.

  • Max

People still watch this?? And how can one take 3 hours? Seems way too much.

  • Matt

Hahaha. People don’t even have the attention span to watch their awful show for two hours.

Making all the same mistakes WCW made.

  • RJ

1000 episodes is not a television record. The Price is Right?

  • CWsucks

Tons of soap operas have hit 1000 episodes too.

  • itwas1ofthem

The Price is Right and Soaps are daily shows. Raw is a weekly show. Law & Order and Bonanza didn’t even make it to 500 episodes.

  • Ultima

    @RJ
1000 episodes is not a television record.

The current U.S. television record, without qualifiers, is SportsCenter with nearly 40,000 unique episodes.

Obviously, they’re excluding shows that air mutliple times per week. Looking at once a week programming only, WWE Raw is way ahead of everything else.

    “People still watch this?? “

It’s one of the best rated shows on USA.

  • Kaylie

I see them getting hit hard in ratings with this. I see tons more commercials. Also, I see total nonsense. I gave up WWE altogether 2 years ago for CBS comedies & Family Guy reruns on TBS. Its gotten boring & unentertaining to watch.

  • Tiny Thomas Thompson

The entire first hour of the show will be Michael Cole reading tweets and telling us what is trending on twitter.

We will see the first ever WWE Tweet Off…. And get the first ever WWE Tweet Champion. #greatidea

Yeah, I’m done with wrestling. I’ve been following it for years, but it’s time to say goodbye. I’ll be going to Med School and wasting two hours of every Monday night on this is going to be tough. Three sounds borderline ridiculous. My TV time is better spent elsewhere.

  • MattM

Bill, I can see how on the surface this may seem like a good idea based on how high the ratings have been but this overkill. 3 hours of pro wrestling, especially this watered down new version of it is too much and people are going to eventually lose interest and tune out.

  • iggy.

3-hour Nitro was ok when they had the Luchador Hour.

  • john

Awesome. They’re going to have an extra hour of video recaps that aired 1500 times the previous week and instead of 30 second matches, the divas are going to have 15 second matches

  • KJ Styles

Actually Bill, it’s THE highest rated show on USA.

That said, I don’t like this move. The last 3 hour RAW was terrible, and you know that the show will not be great every week. Expanding the show by an hour isn’t gonna make it better, writing better storylines will. That and getting rid of that idiot John Laurenitius.

  • KJ Styles

1000 episodes is not that impressive for a show that never has repeats.

  • rob

WWE makes up “facts” as they go. In other words, take whatever they say with a huge grain of salt.

They constantly need to pat themselves on the back due to how insecure they are.
