Continuing our night-by-night look at the Fall 2012 schedule, we move to Sunday.  The only changes on the night are two ABC shows, and one CBS show, but only one of those shows are new.  Desperate Housewives, long an ABC tentpole is gone, and hopeful sophomore Revenge takes its place at 9pm, followed by the only new show of the night, 666 Park Avenue.

Last spring there was some doubt about the NFL season, but there's no doubt this year. Sunday Night Football will, of course, dominate the night's ratings. ABC won't top football, but it may well top the night after football season.

Will The Good Wife finally be sold into syndication? Considering the tenacity of Les Moonves' salespeople, I'm going with yes, but it hasn't been an easy sell. The Mentalist takes the place of canceled CSI: Miami at 1opm. The Mentalist will have 116+ episodes at the end of next season (its 5th), and isn't owned by CBS. Next spring will be an interesting time for fans worried about the show's future.

No new shows for Fox's Sunday animation line up next season. The Cleveland Show will join the night at 7:30 after football season.

Take a trip down memory lane with last season's 2011's Sunday Fall schedule:

Revenge is a big bet for ABC. This is the kind of show that viewers may drift away from after a Season, or it could still have a lot to room to grow. It will certainly have a strong lead-in, but we’ll have to see if the OUAT audience enjoys it enough to stick around. I’m definitely waiting to see what happens with this one.

  • AO

I enjoy The Good Wife, but keeping it at 9:00 is just not going to result in the best ratings possible for CBS. Clearly CBS is looking at the bigger picture/long-term here.

  • Baqinardo

So excited for 666 PA. Hope it wont end up like Pan Am or GCB.

  • AO

On a personal note, this is definitely the most packed Broadcast night for me (as well as being the busiest cable night) with Amazing Race, Good Wife, Once Upon A Time, Revenge and 666 Park Avenue.

Revenge has an easy slot, if it cant get a 3.0 there up against Good Wife and a OUAT lead-in, it’s a flop

  • Anya

I’m not sure what I think of this move for Revenge. It’s a better slot, but I’m not certain that a serialized soap opera will be able to pick up more viewers in its second season. It’s possible Revenge won’t be able to meet higher expectations.

That being said, it’s a great schedule for ABC. A fantasy for female viewers to watch with their kids, a soap for the female viewers after the children are sent to bed, and a creepier fantasy for people who stay up late.

  • DW

the good wife may go up due to those DH fans who dont want to watch a show that wanders around for 50 minutes then does something. and the good wife bringing down the mentalist ratings is lousy. we have remotes now , we have reminders now. i could see if it was 30 years ago and we have to get up and change the channel. if the mentalist drops , it drops on its own.

  • Polar Bear

@Jon27288265-OUAT barely gets a 3.0 rating-anyway those shows may not be that compatible

  • wn

It’s really bizarre that they didn’t put The Mentalist on at 9 because presumably, it can get better ratings than TGW. Anyways, I’ll be watching it no matter what time it airs. Sunday looks like a very interesting night, and not a dead zone.

  • AO

    @ DW,

You watch TV like that. So do I, and I would bet most other people on this site, but that doesn’t mean that there’s still not a portion of viewers out there who are reluctant to change the channel for whatever reason.

  • David Howell

TGW and Mentalist should have swapped.

TGW is enough of an “adult” show for the late slot, and there’s no way The Mentalist deserves the Sunday 10:30pm slot (because that’s what it is on CBS). Fans of The Mentalist should treat this as a final season.

Also, I note that Fox aren’t risking NFL overrun at all, letting The OT carry on until 8. That’s the other change on the schedule; last season The Cleveland Show was still slated for 7:30.

ABC will win the scripted night unless Revenge’s highly serialized format means it can’t keep the OUAT lead-in. ABC have got to rerun it prominently in the summer.

I think ABC is going to have great Sunday nights this fall!

Once Upon a Time should grow a little bit and be in the high 3s, low 4s. Revenge show grow and with the help of a strong lead in should reach series highs of mid 3s. 666 Park Ave. should at least premiere to 3.5-4.0, and should be a hit, it shouldn’t flounder like Pan Am, or premiere low like GCB.

Once/Revenge could be to ABC Sunday this season as Desperate Housewives/Grey’s Anatomy was to ABC Sundays in 2004/2005.

  • Harmiel

Rooting for Animation Domination and The Mentalist. Maybe Revenge if the episodes are unpredictable unlike the last few episodes of first season.

  • Patrick W.

What about “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead”?

  • Dan S

If I were to make any change I would’ve put 666 on before RVG. I think that show will be an instant hit & will definitely give TM a run for the money

  • Bad Wolf

    @ David Howell

CSI:Miami lasted 2 seasons in this timeslot. And it was older and likely more expensive than The Mentalist. I think the news of The Mentalist’s death are greatly exaggerated.

I think Once Upon a Time will be the key to ABC’s lineup’s success or failure. If it remains stable or grows, Revenge and 666 Park Avenue will have a good shot at establishing themselves on Sundays. But if Once a Time goes down, good luck for the 2 other shows.

I can’t see The Good Wife being crushed by Revenge, still next season may be its last, so I hope CBS won’t shorten it. And if The Good Wife remains stable or doesn’t fall too much, let’s dream : a 5th season on Fridays !

    Barely??? Every F … time!

    @Patrick W.

    What about them?

I really love that ABC moved Revenge here. I urge all of you who have not watched this show to watch say 5 episodes, i mean really watch and I just about guarantee you will be hooked — it’s amazing how well written each and every episode is and you are guaranteed a jaw dropping moment. One of the best first seasons of any series.

I am concerned about the good wife, since I love both shows, I really wish that CBS had moved it back to Tuesdays.

  • Survivor Fan

    Sundays for me:
ABC- Revenge, maybe 666 Park Ave.
    CBS- Amazing Race
NBC- Football if the Eagles play (otherwise periodic check-ins), Apprentice midseason
    FOX- None

  • AO

    @ Patrick W.,

This is only for Broadcast Networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC). Those programs are all aired on non-Broadcast (Cable) stations.
