I always find it amusing that Fox touts this position when they rely solely on American Idol to pull in the numbers. Their entire slate of programs under-performs the big three consistently.

The X Factor? MLB postseason? NFL on FOX? Family Guy? Glee? New Girl?

Their entire slate of programs under-performs the big three consistently.

Have you even looked at NBC’s ratings in the past several years?!

“Well, take away the NFL from NBC, and its ratings are …”

Take away a network’s biggest ratings draw, and then judge it. I continue to find it amusing that NBC seems to be the only network held to this standard.

Take away the NFL from NBC? Fine. Take away Idol from Fox. Take away Modern Family or DWTS from ABC.

In 2006, NBC made a conscious programming decision to invest in the NFL for its prime time — which was made possible, I might add, because Disney decided to move its pro football package from ABC to ESPN.

While it’s true the Fox’s overall lineup is stronger now, there were some seasons where its ratings were clearly Idol-inflated — in some respects, they still are — and I never heard anyone insist that those ratings shouldn’t count.

Yes, ABC has the stronger overall schedule. But NBC made the investment in the NFL, so the NFL counts in the ratings. And if the NFL lifts NBC to third place, well, as they say in golf, there’s no room on the scorecard for explanations.

So NBC is not number 4!! You know, they’ll do all they can this week to make sure they remain 3rd place in the final ratings.

CBS. Very impressive. It’s almost head-to-head with FOX in A18-49! A 0.2 difference looks like a small margin on paper but it’s just CBS creeping up to a lead in the demo too. They’re doing something right.

While The Voice and Smash have helped lift NBC’s ratings boat, it’s so clear that the Super Bowl is the main reason the network is not in a tie with ABC or owning 4th place outright. This is when I liked TBTN’s crude average of stripping out the Super Bowl from a network’s ratings to see how much of an impact that day can have. Heck, imagine how upward the Super Bowl would skew The CW’s average.

Considering CBS’ usual ratings at 10pm, I’m sure they’re actually ahead of FOX during the actual head-to-head portion of the schedule (8-10).
