I like how Torrid points out that the LA basketball market dominates the LA hockey market but conveniently ignored the fact that the Philly hockey market dominated the Philly basketball and baseball markets COMBINED.
Oops.
Kobe brought in some huge viewers for a 2nd round series for the NBA.
The NHL is doing pretty decent numbers for the Eastern Conference this series could be a lot higher though I think the two New York markets in the same series hurts it. If it had been the Caps and Rangers that could’ve been 1.6 million viewers easily.
WWE is so bad right now no wonder their numbers are down. They need a huge change, I can’t wait to see how TNA does this summer on Thursdays now that its live.
@ Jenn: You’re right I think ABC Family having these breaks are killing their shows. They need to air them in consecutive seasons over a period of weeks.
@ Matt: I know right there’s a lot of markets where hockey does better than basketball. The Flyers are much more popular in Philly than the Sixers are. LA has always been a basketball market. Torrid is an idiot anyways.
@ Brian D: I’ve been wondering about TV Land not being in HD as well. Their comedies are taped in HD but none of us can see them in HD. They really need to add an HD network.
I think it’s too soon to speak about whether PLL is bucking the trend of the overall declines ABCF is experiencing. Now that they have revealed who A is in the most absurd way, I bet this upcoming season will be the lowest rated ever.
I’ve watched Secret Life of the American Teenager since the first season. This season, since it came back in March I mean, has been the worst one by a landslide, and judging by what other fans are saying online it seems they agree. I don’t know what the heck is going on with this show right now but the writing has been awful since it came back. Amy has become unlikeable in the span of 7 or 8 episodes. Aren’t we supposed to like the lead character? Nothing is happening with her and Ricky other than they argue every episode over something stupid. What was the point of them even getting engaged if this was how it was going to be? Why aren’t they planning a wedding? Setting a date? Something! What’s the deal with all the new characters, too? No one likes them, and they are taking away from the main characters. The storylines are just going around in circles. Nothing seems to be happening and fans are bored now. I am not the least bit surprised to see ratings are falling.
Ahhhh Matty – back for more I see good good…. *rubs hands in glee*
——————————————————————–
Nice try at another red-herring Matty boy but sorry no bitey bitey ….)
Now back to comparing the NATIONAL appeal of hockey vs BBall:
After the much ballyhooed announcement of a major 10 year deal with NBC for nationwide broadcasts of the NHL playoffs. Hockey fans (incluindg little Matty here) were certain that the NHL was about to catch and possibly surpass the NBA as must see TV in the USA. Who could blame them? after swallowing the propaganda emanating from hockey media and their own fevered brains for years – thinking and saying that the ONLY reason Basketball keeps beating the tar out of Hockey year after year was just a lack of exposure. Fix that they all crowed and we gonna see 1994 SI headlines again oops!
Suddenly all they wanted is here and its not looking too good for Hockey at all
– hey Matty – surely the Stanley Cup playoffs has broken 2 million national audience by now right? Afterall its the conference finals we are looking at here – involving the two biggest sports markets in the country!!!
What’s that – no? you mean you may have to wait until the actual finals before breaking 2 million? I don’t understand that – everything is in place right? lessee…
- reputedly most exciting playoff in sports – check
- national coverage of playoffs – check
- saintly caucasian boys (no thugs – get it?) – check
- so-called superior, irresistable sport only has to be seen to love – check
- not the NBA – check
so what the helll is going on Matty? the NBA’s now doing consistently 4-8 million for almost game – how come this tremendous, astounding, mindbogglingly entertaining sport of HGockey now struggles to compete with “Family Guy” and regularly loses to (forget the NBA games) peripheral NBA related programming like Basketball Wives and LaLa’ Full Court Life? I mean, that’s enough to drive a fanbois to serious drinking!!!
You drunk Matty? LOL!
@ Brianna M. They did set a date July 4th next year. I have a hard time believing kids would volunteer to summer school. I know this is the brendaverse and I should be used to it after watch 7th Heaven for 11years but that summer school storyline is absurd.
Wow those Secret Life numbers are horrible. And no its not because of “long breaks.” Didn’t the show return to a 1.1 in March? The fact that the show bled half its audience this season is not ABC Family’s fault. Blame bad writing.
Bonus ratings from @TVBill:
The Secret Life of the American Teenager 8pm 0.5 adults 18-49 rating, 1.163m viewers; 10pm 0.4 adults 18-49 rating, 640,000 viewers.
Of course the terrible plot lines are the writers’ fault and not the network’s. I’ve watched SL since the beginning and this season is by far the worst. However, With the exception of PLL every ABC Family show has low ratings now including the other “front runners”. SAB was down the entire last season. TLG and JBD have never even seen a 1.0 rating or anything close to that. Unless Bunheads turns out to be this huge hit the network will be putting all of their eggs in PLL’s basket for the summer.
@Brian D. I watch Hot In Cleveland and Happily Divorced on Hulu in HD… although they are delayed about 21 days from the TV Land debut.
Unrelated – Anyone have numbers for The Pitch on AMC??????????
I like that ABC Family breaks shows into 12 episode half seasons, 12 episodes in the summer and 12 in the winter and no repeats. I heard they might do that in the fall also I hope they do that for all 4 seasons.
True. It’s not just Secret Life’s ratings that have fallen on ABC Family. When Switched At Birth returned in January, they saw significant drops as well, and that show’s still in its first season! I do blame bad writing on most of Secret Life’s decline, but you can’t argue the fact that the 6 month hiatus is probably hurting them too. At least Secret Life has already been renewed for a 5th season. They better be thankful they already got that renewal. I’m scared for shows like Switched At Birth and The Lying Game though. Those are still freshman shows, and they’re currently on a 6 month hiatus! They’re ratings will probably sink faster than Secret Life’s.
@Brian & @Collector — there *IS* an HD version of TVLand, but hardly anybody carries it. Only AT&T U-Verse and certain Cablevision (iO) systems carry it, according to the AVS HD chart:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1058081
And no wonder — why would a cable/fiber/satellite carrier want to waste precious, scarce TV bandwidth for a network with only four or five new sitcoms in HD, while everything else is (I presume) old videotaped SD content?
Holy Crap at Secret Life’s ratings it’s not even a good lead-in anymore. Bad writing or not the ratings are officially alarming. So much for increasing with less competition. It freaking flat lined!
WOW!…shocking numbers for TSLOTAT, but the show is THAT bad it deserves it!
Finnaly people have woken up to just how terrible this show is!
Still it’ll soon have 100+ eps. for syndication, a first for ABCF.
Cast members from The Lying Game have said that the show will be returning in the January of 2013, which means it will have a 9-month hiatus and will be premiering a year after season 1b did. I just don’t get that!
i remember back in the day when wwe Monday night raw was consistently the # 1 show on cable week by week
@Noelle
Me either, because I think airing it in the summer after PLL really could of have helped The Lying Game keep growing it’s audience. Now being off the air for nine months will likely be very damaging.
I don’t see single ladies in top 100…. Hmmm
